How does someone start a website with all these copyright laws?

A website requires pictures to look appealing in most cases, and we can't just freely use pictures.

I personally cannot afford to pay $5 per picture when every article I write requires 2 pictures.

What are the options? I don't want to risk it because if I end up having to pay any decent sum of money, my life is basically screwed.

    I think the first thing you need to change is mindset. You are what you think. There are many photos you can use and not all of them cost money there are solutions if you want to make it work.

      Good point, I guess I'm just frustrated because I've started a website and have 10 articles up, but just read that giving credit and linking to someone's work isn't good enough, which is what I've been doing. I'm going to re-do all of it.

      I guess I came off like I was complaining, but what I really want is to be pointed in a direction where I can figure out a way to include pictures for free or cheap to replace all the images I currently have.

    They have a pretty big inventory, and most can be purchased for .80 or $1.00

    However, I believe you will have to pay around $50 to fund a credit account up front

    Have you ever tried to snap your own pictures? You would be surprised what you can do with even just a smart phone.

      There are free-to-use images at Google if you filter the results so that you use images that have a license which allows you to reprint them with no worries.
      1. Go to Google Images
      2. Type in your desired image, say "mountain biking" in the search bar (go ahead and search on this term so you can see the results we're going to get.)
      3. Click on the little "gear" image in the far right upper corner which gives you a drop down menu. On that menu, click on "advanced search."
      4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says "usage rights." You will be presented with another drop down. Click on the category "free to use, share or modify, even commercially"
      5. Hit the blue "advanced search" button.
      6. The images that come up through this filter (and there are dozens of them) are images that you can use with your articles and on your web site. No, they are not unique and others will be able to use them too. But they're free and legal.
      Having said all this, I don't necessarily think free images are going to save you. For every obstacle you can possibly encounter in Internet Marketing, and there will be many, there is a workable solution out there somewhere. You just need to find it. Get good at finding solutions and you will become an excellent IMer! The good folks on this forum will help you if you will have some patience, persistence, and give back when you can.

        I have clients that have a hard time coming up with decent images so this is a nice alternative.

    1) There are a number of completely free stock photo sites, some with quite good pictures, just make sure you read the terms of use carefully.

    2) Try an advanced search in Google Images and filter by "Free images for commercial use".

    3) Take your own pictures, or hire a friend to do it.

    4) Not all stock photos are $5 each (or more). Not even close. There is a huge amount of pictures available out there for less. For the web, you don't usually want or need huge Hi-resolution images (Not in blog posts or articles anyway).

    There's a few options for ya, I'm sure there are more.

        Be careful when using google images to find free images. This is direct from Google Support concerning using their filters...

        "Labeled for commercial reuse

        Your results will only include images labeled with a license that allows you to copy the image for commercial purposes, in ways specified in the license.

        Labeled for reuse with modification

        Your results will only include images labeled with a license that allows you to copy and modify the image in ways specified in the license.

        Labeled for commercial reuse with modification

        The onus is still on you to check that the image is free to use and the only way to do that is to check with the copyright holder. If you can't contact the copyright holder of an image that you want to use then find another image.

        The safest route is to take your own photos or search on the stock photo sites and be prepared to pay. There are many photo sites where you can purchase usage rights for less than $5.

      There are three things wrong with your question. They are all assumptions.

      1. The assumption that you must have images

      2. The assumption that it's unfair that you can't get images affordably

      3. The assumption that you cant get images affordably.

      The solution: change your assumptions.

      1. It is not true that you must have images.

      My most profitable clickbank vendor site has 0 images that I did not create myself.

      My 2nd and 3rd best, started with 1 (actually the same one).

      My 4th best has 1.

      My best adsense site has 0.

      My best affiliate campaigns had 0.


      2. Even if images were required (although they often are not) it's not unfair, it's simply problem that you have to solve.

      Successful people solve problems that act as a road block to others. So get your thinking boots on.


      3. There are lots of affordable solutions to getting images:

      Use public domain images.

      Take your own photos

      Use open source images (in compliance with the license)

      Use free images that some affiliate programs provide, etc.

    Try this to find free images on Google. First go to Google Images, then click the gear icon in the top right corner. Click Advanced Image Search and then scroll down to Usage Rights and select "Free to use share, or modify, even commercially". There are actually a fair bit of images there and this will get you images from all over the web rather than just one collection like most free image directories have.

    Wikimedia Commons is a website that has thousands of public domain pictures available. You can use them without giving any attribution. Creative massive amounts of high quality content and publish it and sell access it, or advertising alongside of it.

    I'm biased but I feel the Safest way to cover your butt with commercial use is to get photos from a reputable agent or directly from the photographer. They're pre-vetted for both quality and legality if they're at stock agencies. Amateur and hobby photographers rarely know the legalities involved and automated algorithms get things wrong.

    Dreamstime, Fotolia and others have free sections but the work quality varies. I even allow free use for the small size of hundreds of my own pics at my website but there is a link back requirement and restrictions. Going to a site like mine or one of the legitimate agencies saves a lot of anxiety in the long run, plus generally negates the need to waste hours wading through crap.
