Getting the confirmation click (AWeber auto rules)

Hi all,

First time poster, long time lurker.

Yesterday I release my very first info product (go me!) on a hobby site that I run. I'm using e-junkie shopping cart and paypal as payment processor.

I'm using Aweber for my email lists and using e-junkie as the parser, but I encountered a problem last night.

I had my first buyer a few hours after release, and the automatic rule in aweber unsubscribed them from my original list, but what I didn't realize is that it unsubscribes people regardless of whether or not they confirm the new subscription. That means I have now lost someone from my list

I've searched for info around these parts, and everyone raves about how easy the parser and automatic aweber rules make life, but no one really talks about getting existing subscribers to click your confirmation email.

What techniques do you guys use to make sure existing subscribers move over to the new list to minimize loss, that also doesn't violate the rights of buyers who are not currently on a list?

Or am I missing something extremely obvious?

Thanks a lot

Forgive me but have you contacted Aweber?

I mean you're paying them for the service and I'd have thought someone at Aweber could answer the question a bit better.

That doesn't sound right to me. A lead doesn't technically join your new list until they confirm their email address or if you are using single optin, they join your list right away. Until they join your new list they won't be removed from your old list.

That's the way I understand it anyway.

So only two things could be happening. There is an issue with your account or the new lead did join your new list (and were removed from your old one) and then chose to unsubscribe.

Are they still there in your new list as an unconfirmed optin or as an unsubscribed optin? If it's the latter then they chose to unsubscribe from your new list.

Regardless of that I would just use single optin for all lists so this type of thing isn't an issue. That's what I do.

It doesn't seem like they would need to confirm a subscription to a new list if they're automatically sent to that list by Aweber. I would contact Aweber and ask about it.

      Thanks everyone.

Yes I did contact Aweber and apparently this is how the system works. Once the buyer completes the first opt-in (buys the product through ejunkie) they are removed from the old list, but only once they complete the second opt-in (confirmation email) do they get added to the second list.

The purchase took place at 12:30am. At 12:31am I can see they unsubscribed from my original list. However, when I look at my new 'buyers' list, that same name and email address is sitting there as "confirmation pending", and according to Aweber support if they don't click the confirmation link within 30 days I will lose the subscriber.

I agree it doesn't sound right, but that's what they're telling me and what my account shows.

Single opt-in is not an option because when you go through a parser, Aweber automatically make the opt-in a double. That's info from previous threads I've found.

What I was hopefully after from you guys was some techniques, or maybe some work-arounds to help separate prospects and customers into two separate lists without losing any subscribers (or minimal losses at least).

        Actually, it does make sense.

If you have told Aweber you want subscribers put on to the new (buyers) list when they purchase then yes, they will remove them immediately from the old (prospect) list because you don't want them receiving the emails you send to just your prospects. So I can see why this does make sense.

So you really only have one option.

Give them a much better reason to confirm. This would include giving them their access details in the first email which means they have to confirm their email address to receive the access details to the product.

Thanks again guys. No worries Richard. I know very well of the 'face palm' feeling you get with some question that get asked on forums. No hard feelings

Will, if I could pick you brains a little more on this please...

It may be difficult to implement with my current set up using e-junkie, because they provide a unique download like that gets sent via email immediately after payment. (which expires after so many attempts)

I might be better dropping e-junkie altogether and just using PayPal, but what worries me with that is if I host the product on my own site, people can simply share the URL to the page that contains the download link.

Or are you talking about maybe using the 'welcome message' in Aweber as the product delivery method?

Yes, my apologies actually. My slightly acid tongued response was mainly from the point of view of seeing so many people paying for a service and not actually contacting the service provider when there's an issue, which is odd to say the least.

You on the other hand have contacted them, so I stand corrected and fair play to you. I'm glad you found your answer and I agree with Will, some kind of very strong incentive to get them to reconfirm is a must and I like his example too, I'd test that as soon as you can...

    Hi guys,

Been playing around tonight changing the setup and I've now removed ejunkie as the aweber parser.

Instead I have set up a custom thank you page which customers are sent to after they click buy. This is where I hope to capture my buyers addresses, but because it's now using a web form, if they don't fill it in I won't lose them off my original list. However, I think this page will do a decent job of capturing most buyers:

    http://biketrackdayshub(dot)co(dot)u...-your-purchase

I guess it's something I'll have to monitor.

    Thanks for your help chaps
