Is content no longer king anymore

I have been doing the internet thing for only 5 years or so but from day one I was always told content was king, that if you wanted to be on page one position one you had to have good content.

I wonder now if this is still true because many of the sites I like to go to often are no longer on top of page one, they are still on page one but now around p 7 or 8. The sites that have replaced them have no content on page one at all but are filled with pictures, most don't even have a little snipit of info as a lead into an article where as the site I like the most has an article with a good bit of information on page one.

I could understand this if it were a big site selling something specific or sites like Amazon or Ebay but they aren't. So what in your opinion is changing why are sites that look great with lots of style with no clear direction of what to do on the home page are ending up on page one position one and the sites that were on page one P one with great info are dropping.

  • Content is, and always will be king. There are, of course, some examples of sites which rank well without any good content, but over the long term these will be the exception rather than the rule.

Google (and all the search engines) have consistently made updates which benefit high-quality content and punished copied or low-quality sites. There is no reason to think this will be changing any time soon.

hi, great question, I still believe content is king but content alone will not cause you to achieve page 1 rankings you have got to have the entire recipe down right in order to rank excellently these days and going forward. Social signals play a big key now in where Google and other search engines rank you so not only should you focus on great quality content but also on building a facebook, twitter, gplus, and linkedIN page for your business as google will often check these social signals to see how influential you are. Based on all of these factors, backlinks included, they will then rank you where they think you deserve.

The expression (content is king) doesn't necessarily have anything to do with search engine results. I think people who attribute good traffic to the quality of their content are probably getting most of that traffic from somewhere other than search engines.

        Content alone is not enough.

User experience is king. (Google didn't become #1 by happenstance)

You can have the best content in the world, but if your site navigation sucks, your site design causes eye strain, your site has too many annoying animated ads, your target audience doesn't identify with your tone/delivery, etc., etc., etc. it won't matter.

There is no question that quality content has a place in the palace. But Content is just one of the jewels in the crown that sits upon the head of User Experience.

Love this. So clear. I definitely agree. The internet (and world) is not a meritocracy. There are a lot of dropshipping companies selling the exact same products, but some succeed and some die. In the long term if you want to survive you need to have killer content, but there are a lot more factors at play.

Ease of use is a huge one. Your site design is the most important element in your customer service plan. Your customer isn't going to trust you if they can't figure out how to navigate your site.

Content is king has a lot of meaning..

With a quality content your On-Site SEO is halve way done,
it's your choice to optimize the content for your keywords
which completes the process for On-Site SEO.

Quality content stands a greater chances of going viral through
content syndication (meaning webmaster posting your article on their blog).

As far as ranking high on the SERP is concern, you need quality
    Off-Site SEO (backlinks).

Who says website can't rank without content, those picture
can be optimized too like the content.

Content is not strictly text. Photos, art, videos, info graphics, templates, software, pdf files, slide shows... All of these are forms of content that can be useful, relevant, engaging and popular.

Yes, I agree that the phrase "Content Is King" doesn't just refer to the importance of content for getting search engine traffic. It also means that offering great content on your site is what this game ultimately comes down to.

After all, it really wouldn't matter if you ranked number one on every search engine if your site didn't have good content. In that case, people would click away to another site fairly quickly.

One interesting thing I'd like to point out is that people often seem to forget (as have I at times) that there's plenty of YouTube videos, pics, and audio out there that can be embedded into your posts. Then just write a little caption underneath. Talk about a great way to add content.

Content = copy, video, music, pictures. Pretty much everything.

    Without content...

    You've got precisely nothing.

    If you're talking about copy...

    then yes...

    Content is still king.

If you're looking for top billing on Google, copy (and other content) will help get you there.

    But in most cases...

    That ain't enough.

    Not anymore.

You can rank sites well without a lot of content but the thing is to monetize those sites you need real people, and good content is what attracts real people.

Good content have a positive affect your website’s ranking.
Content on your site must always be the unique and updated, If there is no content worth reading or seeing on the site, than people won’t stay on your site for longer time, and that is negative.

Text content was king - because it gave people enough information to make a decision and now the same thing is done with video - you do need some text but nowhere as much as people are suggesting.

Most people say it must be content because their site isn’t getting anywhere (lots of content sellers perpetuating the myth here including software sellers feeding of the fear of failure - they all make money from the myth) - what works in on page optimisation and a good internal linking structure that Google can understand.

But mostly it comes down to choosing 10 or 12 good strongly related keyword and creating interlinked pages for them and then a little bit of relevant and slow back linking plus something that people want to buy and of course hide your links

My little bit on this subject

Content is and always will be king. But just because you have great content, it does not mean anything.

You are going to have to take the time to promote it. Build relationships and get people to share your content. The more your content is shared, you will get some great search engine love.

Content is king BUT different people require different types of content at different stages in the sales process.

informational search keywords = more in depth content
buying keywords= little content/buy now button

Google knows different keywords require different types of results. Not all content is the same.

That site with little content may have been linked to a private blob network. I had a competitor who was number 2 on page one of Google and all he had was a squeeze page for a ripoff CPA offer. But he had lots of links to high quality Web 2.0 sites. He stayed there for about 10 months post Penguin until Google pushed the site way down.
