How to market to non-targeted traffic?

I have a site getting ~ 5,000 unique visitors/day. I'll do my best to describe what's kind of an odd situation. This isn't my market, but the comparison is similar.

I have a site that's all about the "Cod Liver Oil For Babies." There are articles that discuss when it's safe, how much to give, some specific reasons it should be or could be used, etc.

The site is currently monitized with adsense and it does okay (not really sure what a site with this many visitors should be making), but I want to diversify my income stream and increase revenue obviously.

The obvious answer is to promote cod liver oil, but it sells for $3 and just steals adsense clicks.

The other option is to build an email list, a sales funnel, and try to make money that way. This is the option I prefer, however... this is where the problem starts.

For the life of me I can't figure out what to promote to this list that's going to make any sense. I don't really know the problem they're trying to solve and I don't know what they want.

Any ideas, best to just stick with adsense? (I'd do both anyway as I can get decent opt-in rates and not lose much adsense revenue).

If you can find good CPA programs or products geared toward babies/parenting that seems like a good fit.

This isn't the place to promote your own website. I'd suggest reading here before making more posts: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...rum-rules.html

      Best of luck!

If people are purchasing Cod Liver Oil its fair to say they are looking for home or organic remedies. for instance instead of GASX for babies why not try this natural product. Its Gluten free blah, blah

Well no matter what suggestions you get, it is all going to be a shot in the dark until you solve this problem above.

There are a couple of things you can do

    1) You can ask them
You can do this by setting up a survey on your website. Like in a sidebar.
But don't ask them what they want to buy, ask them something like, 'What are the top 3 problems/challenges you keep running into with X that you want help on?" Or "What's your most burning questions about X?"

    2) You can look at what your competitors are offering
Look for similarities and common offers. Obviously you don't want to copy them but use that to give you some ideas

    3) You can find some forums or blogs in your niche and do some research
Look for common questions that keep coming up again and again
Find out what are the common problems people keep running into?
Look to see what do they keep complaining about over and over
You also want to look at where the customers make suggestions on how to improve things

These common themes that keep coming up should give you some ideas on what solutions your customers are looking for.

Those are just some things that you can do and I hope I have helped point you in the right direction.

On a final note, remember until you solve this problem you are just relying on chance and luck. And that is not a good foundation for a business.

I'd look at your analytics to see how those 5,000 people are getting to your site. That will tell you a lot. Particularly if it is mostly Google organic traffic. Look for trends in the search phrases. Product ideas will jump out at you. Behind every search phrase is a real person looking for "something". Find out that "something" and give it to them.
