Where have all the real names and real avatars gone from the forum?

This point has been raised before, notably in the long-running Jason Moffatt post:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...um-if-you.html

But it seems that it could do with highlighting once more.

This is a marketing forum and as such you are best advised to be building relationships with the other members. One of the best ways of doing this is by using your own name and preferably a picture of yourself too.

It's a simple little thing but it can have a big impact.

When I scroll down the main forum I see lots of manufactured forum screen names (eg skedyfhb54, 58htloot, iamsad2) that I've forgotten as soon as I've read them. Real names have a much better chance of sticking in my forgetful brain.

When I scroll down the contributors to a thread I see large percentages not using an avatar, a sure-fire way of not allowing me to remember a face.

I haven't even started on the credibility factor. We all know how important first impressions are, well, I'm probably not alone in making a snap (albeit subconscious) judgement upon seeing a username that consists of a jumble of letters and numbers and thinking to myself, 'Probably going to be some fly-by-night, get-rich-quick-seeker without a brain. I might just dismiss their viewpoint.' I know, I'm terrible aren't I? The fact is that not using an avatar and using a stupid username will damage your believability and credibility.

Be a real, believable, memorable person; a human being. I like to create pretty pictures in my mind when I converse with people, imagining what you look and sound like. It helps me connect with you. At least give me a chance of doing that.

pjCheviot ... you do look like someone that I wouldn't want to have ticked off! Surely you must have a friendly picture than that! course you will probably reply... surely you must have a more up-to-date picture than that!

Peter... I'm glad you highlighted this thread though. I remember it from long ago, but I wasn't very active on Warrior Forum back then and so I didn't bother with the update. I might now. It does increase credibility.

Your photo looks fine. That's a good example of why someone would want an avatar ... to avoid having people critique their photo, insecurity of their looks, etc.

It really makes no difference to me at all. Reputation is built by a person's business ethics ... not by an avatar or photo.

I must admit I'm with the poster who likes to be able to address someone by name, so I'm not so bothered if it's a fake username if they use thier proper name to sign off with

I wasn't bothered about my real name (although 'And Billy' is not actually my surname ) but I was reluctant to post my pic.

I decided to do it in the end, because I think that it does create credibility (especially for newer members who want to become part of this community).

Saying that, there are some very well respected Warriors who don't include a pic (Kay King, Paul Myers, Bev Clements etc.) but they provide such great content and such a distinctive writing style that their real personalities shine through without having to have their photo splashed all over the place.

I think that you are right about the kind of names you mentioned in your original post. They seem to be purposely anonymous and to make it harder to identify them.

However, as a recent victim of email hacking and my Internet security compromised, I don't blame anybody wanting to be anoymous and just get on with running their business.

    Hi Peter

I prefer doing business with people that use their real name - well, hopefully it's their real name. If they don't have an avatar it's not too big a deal but both are better.

Being one of those people that don't like having my pic taken I put it off for as long as I could but have now gone for the real thing.

I cringe every time I see it!! So, if you can create a pretty picture in your mind, as you say, please transfer that image and send it to me [:-)]

It's simple - people like doing business with other people that they
know, like and trust. If you don't allow them to connect with

Well nice to meet you David, nice picture by the way.

Peter, I am with you on this one! And as Willie points out, it's mainly human nature. I can't help myself taking more notice of people (initially at least) when I can see they bothered to put some kind of avatar up, preferably their own picture of them, if not, perhaps something as another posted said, which describes what they are about.

And for me also, perhaps it was the way I was bought up but if I am going to reply to someone, I feel really bad if I don't address them by their name (does not have to be full name, just first name) and you just can't do that with a bunch of numbers as a name.. doesn't seem right somehow.. and you can use your real first name (or form of it) without it being a security risk, keep everything else private if you feel better doing that.

By the way, I started using this avatar picture of myself back in 2004 and the username of SusanneUK (my name is really Susan, most people call me Sue and of course I am from the UK) in order to start Branding myself, so I try and use the same thing, everywhere, so that people 'may' start to recognise me.

      Anyway, that's my twopenneth.

I finally and just recently made the jump to my name instead of my nick, LoudMac (a play off my name and holdover from my geetar pickin' days).

One immediately benefit, was an instant spike in "conversions" from people calling me "Brian", instead of "Mac".

Mac McLeod was my grandfather... (I keed, I keed. I don't mind at all. My GF was 50 times the man I'll ever be.)

And Peter, I'd like to point out for the record that Brian McElroy actually called me MickLEEodd, recently. Can we revoke his Scot heritage card or something?

Totally OT but typing that reminds me of the time I visited Edinburgh. We landed at the airport and I went to the counter to get our ride to the hotel or wherever.

I said to the nice old lady behind the counter, "Hi, I'm Brian McLeod... M-C-L-E...." where she sweetly interrupted and said, "you don't have to spell it HERE, laddy... you're HOME".

Still makes me smile 10 years later. I guess names DO matter... LOL

One of the main reasons I don't use my real name is because I was stupid and didn't use a pen name at EzineArticles for the longest time so I have a ton of articles attached to my real name. For me, it is a combination of the fact that I don't want people to backwards engineer my niches AND I admit that I have some really, really dumb articles out there, although they do get better with time. I think using your real name and photo is a good idea if you want to brand yourself and gain customers here at the WF.

Of course, not all of us are here to gain customers or brand themselves and I also think you can gain respect by your posts and not necessarily because you have a photo and a name. Take bgmacaw, for example - I've learned to recognize him (or her?) by their bird avatar and their nick name. I like and respect what they have to say so I always read posts from them whenever I happen to see one in a thread.

I've actually been using cashcow for the past 5 years in different forums so I think some people might "know" me as that. The name actually comes from a family joke (long story) and I started using it well before all that offline cashcow stuff came about.

I did actually try to change it to my real name a while back (simply because I didn't want people to think I had something to do with offline stuff, cause I don't) but my ticket got closed and no name change. Not sure if I asked in the wrong way or something. Anyway, I figure the admin here has plenty other stuff to do so I never pursued it.

I never used an avatar here - I just don't have many pics of myself because I don't think I take a good pic.

But there have been several posts like this lately - so I've decided to bite the bullet and put one up. It is nice to have a pic to associate with a name and fair's fair!

Appears that most folk agree. I can appreciate the security argument, but why choose a nonsensical username? Why not a real sounding pseudonym and a graphic for your avatar?

It is true that you can gain respect and credibility without either a real name or avatar IF your posts are of a high enough quality. For most new members it'd be better if they didn't put up an unnecessary barrier from the off.

    Peter

P.S. Brian (MickLeeOdd) Re 'Mr' McElroy, I'm not sure whether we should let him back in. He's obviously abandoned the lovely Scottish climate for blistering heat elsewhere - what sort of man, nae, what sort of Scotsman can he be if he's worried about a wee bit of frost in May?

I understand the reluctance to use your real photo and name, but I think it really depends where you post it. If it's a social site, there is very good reason to stay anonymous. In a marketing forum like this, there isn't quite the risk... people are here looking for business-related connections - having your photo and name are almost detrimental to that process.

Worse than those who use fake names and photos are those who are totally anonymous here. They have no contact info anywhere. And in at least one case, someone refused to give me a real name for his/her testimonial. So that person got my product for zip - because a testimonial without a name is useless.

Do I trust that person? No. Especially now.

From now on, I will be taking a much closer look at Warriors who agree to do a testimonial in exchange for a free look at my product.

It's always nice to be able to associate products/posts to people.

    Jani G,
You would have to open a ticket in the help desk of the forum with the request
to change your username. Make sure you tell them which name you want to have.

Totally agree , why post some pic that has nothing to do with you. People will relate to you etter if they know who they are talking too.

I think people respond better if you spell better better...

I respect people's decision to not post a 'real' pic. Some of us may be fat, ugly, disfigured, etc. The beauty of the internet is that ANYONE can make it no matter what you look like. In brick & mortar biz that's not always the case.

Also - some of us make 6 figures + at regular jobs that if it's found out that we're spending time doing internet marketing or even pursuing other options would not go well w/fortune 500 employers.

JMHO - well, actually not so humble

I can relate to people who are upfront about who they are and as I say elsewhere if you are planning on building an IM business then people need to know who you are. If you use an avatar at least sign your first name in the post, that helps.

Says you without an avatar or real name.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but to say it doesn't matter at all is saying that my opinion and that of others who share my view, don't matter. I would suggest that that's not a clever standpoint.

I do agree that the quality of the post content should matter most, unfortunately we are all just mere human beings, prone to making snap judgements based on first impressions. I couldn't help but make a snap judgement about you, for instance.

If you've read some of the other posts in this thread you will have discovered that a lot of folk find it harder to trust those without real name or avatar. Quality content may eventually save you from those initial judgements, but if you don't have to put up this extra barrier in the first place you could save yourself the bother of having the uphill task of convincing people of your credibility.

Well, frankly, I'm fat. I hate having my picture taken and I just plain don't feel like it. So there!

For the moment, my user name and real name in sig combo will have to do. While I certainly hope that doesn't alienate anyone, if it does there isn't much I intend to do about it.

I hope my posts and contributions stand for themselves.

I find that when I come across someone with their real name and a professional picture on their profile, I tend to take them more seriously. When I see someone with a strange username and goofy avatar, I don't take them seriously. I guess that's why I recently changed my username to my real name and added a pic.

You've probably just uploaded a profile picture which is different from a forum avatar. To get your image to show in your posts do this:

Go to the menu at the top of this page. Open up the drop down menu by hoveringclicking "User CP"

      Click "Control Panel"

      Under Settings & Options

      Click "Edit Avatar"

      Complete the necessary info.

Well, bugger. Don't I just feel bad now (and a little unwanted). I've come from a background of running a gaming related forum for the past 5 years, and you just don't use real names there.

When ever I register for a forum now, I automatically go to my nickname. It didn't even occur to me to use my real name.

Like others have posted, I'm not here to sell you anything, just here to learn. If I ever do create a product, I will be sure to re-register under my real name. To be honest, I am so new and learning still, I probably won't even post, so I guess it won't really matter what I call myself.

Oh, and no avitar because a) clearly posting something fake is not on, and b) I wouldn't inflict my natural looks on anyone without warning.

There's a few people saying that they don't see the need to post avatars or real names because they're not here to sell anything, just to learn. Well, that's all well and good, each to their own.

But if you were a teacher don't you think you would connect with someone more, be willing to assist more readily, remember their previous issues more easily, IF you could remember who the heck they were?

I am sure that you will get more value from this forum, whatever your motives for being here, if you were more visible, open and accessible.

This is always about building relationships.

Building relationships isn't confined to the buying process. It is good practice to build relationships with EVERYONE connected with your business. Treat everyone as if they are a customer, including your bank, your suppliers, your software developers, your writers, your teachers etc.

True I guess. As I said, I didn't create my profile with my real name because it didn't occur to me. Obviously it's an issue on this forum so I will be sure not to post and just read. That way it can't upset anyone.

That's a tad defensive when there is no need to be.. this is just a discussion thread and your views are just as important as anyone else's, so don't take it personally.

Read, when you want to post, post and how about you just sign off your post with your first name but that is just a suggestion.

    hey guys & gals,

    interesting discussion ...

for me personally, the reason i don't use my real name in any forum is simple ... i'm not full time in this game yet and as such i am out on the job market fairly regularly and although i don't necessarily have anything to hide, as someone mentioned previously, (prospective) employers don't necessarily take kindly to you having other sources of income (in fact, some contracts prohibit it).

many prospective employers do "google checks" these days ... and it makes sense to manage what they may find as much as possible.

so that and being a bit of a private person anyways is my reason ... but i will look at putting a real pic up shortly.

If you are looking to brand yourself, and/or you have no privacy concerns, then posting with your real name and picture can have benefits.

If you are not looking to brand yourself, do have privacy concerns (once it's out on the interwebz, its forever, kiddies!), and are not looking to network commercially with complete strangers, then there is no compelling reason to using your own name and face, and you are free to be creative with your persona.

It's really about whether your persona needs to do double duty for you, and be used as a tool to advance your commercial and/or social intent.

I've been networking with strangers with the same avatar in forums for years now and have no problems with credibility, conducting business, etc. People know you by your deeds and avatars and photos have nothing to do with the business reputation that you build.

I can't deny Peter makes some good points...i.e. Its easier to have a learning relationship if you can remember someone, but at the same time "Big Mike" doesn't seem to care about avatars and such, and hes one of the most highly respected guys around here. My real name is Eric Rasmusson and i really do look just like Joey Ramone , but i still gotta go along with Catwomen (she's cool )

            Peter,

if it were just between you and me, I would of course use my real name. Heck, you could even get a photo if you insisted on it...

Between you, me and a small group of other people: same thing.

Between you, me, and 127,726 registered members of the Warrior Forum -- uh, hm, I'd really have to think about this.

Between you, me and every other person on this planet who now or in the future has internet acces and knows how to use a search engine? Nope.

I do value my privacy, and at the moment there's no need for me to build a public reputation with my real name.

But at least I spent a couple of minutes deciding on a pronounceable username instead of letting my password-generator choose one...

What do you think about my approach to this?

The Jazz part of my nickname somehow brands me.
In addition to education in economics and IT I also have a one year music education. Jazz is my main passion, both when it comes to listening and to performing myself.

So my nickname, even though not in the first name/last name format, really tells a lot about who I am. I also use my real picture in the avatar and sign my posts with my real name, either in the post itself or by showing it in the signature.

I also feel strongly about using my own name although I certainly do see and understand opposing viewpoints. I am here on the forum for a number of reasons. To learn, to give back and to perhaps do business in the future. It is important to me that people know who I am and what I am about so I enjoy the transparency.

When I see other people who want to do business deals with you and people who are willing to work on an online business but won't give out their actual name or picture always has me on my toes.

You really have to watch who you can trust these days.

While Traffic Bug may be right, it still adds a level of trust knowing a little bit about them.
