FB Fan Page Vs Email Marketing...

I was just curious, knowing there is no right or wrong answer and i know there are people who will say do both. However, if one had to choose only one strategy, which would you choose and why? Start a facebook fan page or build an email list

This depends of your product, service and niche.

To answer your question (choose one strategy) it would be email marketing and I would do that even if I wasn't in that business.

Why? Because it works big time.

I would always choose email list no matter what. The only time I'd even consider adding a FB fan page is if I was in a very particular niche that works on FB.

In my opinion, some other social networks are much better for advertising.

And what other social networks might you be referring too?

I would build an email list. Facebook might pull a Google and take down your fan page for no reason.

The money is in the list! That still rings true today.

If you have to choose - email list all the way.

I have a pretty successful lead capturing funnel. I send traffic to some of my FB fan pages and from there on, at the very top, I have pinned a notice for a free gift from my website. Once they arrive at my website they can then opt in and get the free gift.

This is the best process I've found so far for fan pages. And a lot to do is how I direct traffic from other sources to this FB page. This works great and I get leads quite daily in an obscure nice that otherwise it would be impossible in which to get leads daily

I'd go with email list over FB for the many reasons noted above. Email marketing still works like gangbusters and will for at least the foreseeable future. I'd also be leery of FB as they mature and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see them start to take down marketers fan pages. I'd rather have control over my business, ie. list, as opposed to someone else having the control, ie. FB.

i use both, and doing well with both.

But again, we are all marketers and you have to remember in this game, if you do not test, you are simply waisting your time. The facebook fan page took a while for me to get the hang of, but with lots of testing I found the stuff that I thought would not work, did work very well, and the stuff that I thought would work, really bombed out. Funny how that works out.

I would definitely go for email as you long term strategy.

Since the birth of the internet email has been rock solid. What is the first thing you check online each day? Chances are, email is right up there.

If you can get some good targeted traffic, for a good return on your investment, from facebook fan pages, then all well and good. Just make sure, you convert that traffic to your email list.

You email is your core, and everything else are just tools to grow your email list.

I would do both because you can build your list while growing your fan page

Different people have different school of thoughts. I will use the Fanpage to build a fan base but I will still direct them to join my email list. I still feel no matter how much hype there are in social media, growing own list of subscribers is still the way forward.

Exactly. Thats why you build both.

Just like you can't reach everyone on your list with email because of filters, isps, etc, you can't reach everyone on your fan page either because of edge rank and other factors.

It's best to do both so you can reach as many people as possible.

I'm not a fan of social media for personal use but I'd pick FB; even if you have an opt-in list there are so many spam filters on email systems and people are SO tired of spam that much of your campaign could get lost or just deleted without being read. I refuse to do business with any company that spams me, even it was something I was looking for so IF you go email make sure that it's opt-in not opt-out.

    Better to do both.
A fan page won't do much for your sales, but it will help build your reputation and brand.
You can direct fans to your opt in page also.

A fan page can do more than you think for your sales in addition to building your reputation and brand.

All depends on what you're using it for.

Focus on building your email list. But there is nothing wrong with having a Facebook fanpage.

I use both, but I have to admit I don't really focus that much on my Fanpage. It does have some likes, but I put most of my attention on building my relationship with the email list.
