html5 vs wordpress for SEO

One of my clients forwarded an email from a marketer claiming they weren't ranked for any competitive keywords (In reality they are #1 #2 and #3 for 4 surrounding cities so I'm taking this with a grain of salt.)

They said something interesting and I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on anything. They said that html5 was more advanced...does that just mean its more difficult to work with or is it really better for local business SEO?

  • Working with HTML5 will not provide you with any additional benefit when it comes to SEO.
  • Why not Wordpress with an HTML5 theme?

  • HTML 5 is a step up over previous versions and makes some aspects of coding easier, but it won't have any bearing on ranking.
  • Your morning coffee will help local SEO more than html5.
  • HTML is not seen any differently to WP when it comes to ranking. Sounds like here-say or someone is very bias.

Actually it is totally incorrect to compare html5 and WordPress. Even in means of SEO.
  • The comparison is unfair! Wordpress is a CMS, HTML5 is a programming language.

Where can you find a good website to learn html5? Thank you.
  • HTML5 itself won't give you any advantage. There are some tags that you can add it into your code ( that were available before html5 anyway ) that can help search engines understand what your website is about.

For example, the rel= attribute. When you place a link to another website you can specify the rel attribute with some variations: friend, recommend, authority, etc. Do a google search and find more about it.

Authorship. You can add a meta tag that will tell google who is the author of the article so it can be linked with other articles written by the same author. This is good when you write for more blogs, or to link your own blog posts with your guest posts from another websites.

There might be another tags that will let google know more about your website. If you are just trying to promote a client website then you might not take any advantage of these tags, as they probably don't want to disclose on the website your promote what they do elsewhere.
  • I would agree that neither one or the other is overall better for SEO.

There is a plethora of factors that affect rankings with things like good content, having an authority site as opposoed to a 'thin' website being some of the big ones.

But keep in mind that html sites load faster than WordPress sites on average. My simple html pages load about 4-5 times faster than WP. Load times have a small effect on SEO but worth mentioning
