Real Names & Addresses When Registering Domain Names

Hi

I was just wondering, when signing-up with Namecheap, do we have to sign-up with real details (eg names). If so, will those details be on the Whois information on any website we register.

If we don't HAVE to give real details, is there any situation where this could be a problem in the future, eg selling website, transferring domains, proving ownership of website (eg to Namecheap themselves)?

Also, what do the four catoegories stand for when it says "Registrant Contact", "Administrative Contact", "Billing Contact" and "Technical Contact"? Are they not all one and the same, ie, me? And thus, do I have to provide the same (real?) details for all four?

Thanks

Well your suppose to give real names and addresses in the whois information, if you don't, it can be used as a reason to take the domain off you, ie if you have a trademark issue etc. If your concerned, get privacy guard, i think it's only a $1 per domain at name cheap, and it'll protect you both ways.

You'll have to supply the contact details of the registrant, the admin contact and the billing contact. Of course, these could all be the same person.

Namecheap currently offer free WhoisGuard Protection with all dotcom purchases, so you needn't have your details show up.

Be sure to select the Whois Protection icon once you register because it doesn't automatically apply itself to your domain.

Quite true, Cynthia. It's not obligatory
