It's worth it if you want to work at an ad agency or marketing firm. To make money on the internet with your own product... now... learn from others on this forum. Soak up all of this knowledge.

I am also a doer. I know I could be a Nurse without going to school, in the old days they learned on the floor and you really don't learn anything till you get in there and do it.

I want to point out I value the degrees I have earned. I may have had to struggle, it might have took me ten years after high school to earn one but you can't substitute a diploma for anything.

I think If I was in a business setting all my staff would have to have degrees. Just for the fact it shows they can start and finish something.

On another note if I have car trouble and I have a mechanic with a degree with one year experience and I have a shade tree mechanic with 30 years experience, the work is going to the tree shade mechanic.

I'm a little confusing to most.

The only way I have ever learned anything is by doing. Trial and error mostly.

If you are looking for a career with a major marketing firm or something of the like, i'm sure that they would require a BS in internet marketing at the very least. From what i have seen most employers like to see some sort of college and 3 or more years experience in the field. However i was able to land a well paying job at large auto dealer in my area on my real world experience alone.

So, i guess what i am saying is that it isn't always needed if you look in the right places and have the experience needed to accomplish the job.

If you are going to work for a Company, it might be worth it so that the potential employer will know that you have the necessary for the job. But if you are going to do it for yourself, why not learn it from the forum and use the money that you planning to invest in Diploma into paid advertising. This is what I will do personally.

although a diploma is not really a must, unless you would want to work on a regular nine to five job in a cubicle of a company somewhere, it will be work to your advantage if you get one, provided you have the time and the enthusiasm for it!

      No, No, and No.

The only one you need, to get permission to make money online is YOU.

If the training is good then sure, but as far as paying for certification NO.

"The Biggest impediment to success is the ingrained sense that you are not qualified, that you must somehow crawl up a hierarchy ladder, that you need some higher authority to grant you permission. The outrageous conceit of the "certifiers" is offensive to me and should be offensive to you. Rather than bowing to their interference, you should spit in their face and kick them in their private. Further, think accurately about the "certifiers" and their purpose as well as their qualification. Whether university or association, it is about money. In many cases, it was dreamed up by an entrepreneur, who is hidden behind the curtain, to get money from insecure, weak mined people desperate for approval and validation, unable to provide for themselves." - Dan Kennedy

Well, depends on who's the person teaching you and why is he teaching you. I'd not say it's useless but experience is the best teacher. If it's taking you a couple thousand dollars, I'd say it would be a better option to use the same amount of money learning stuff by practically buying out projects and operating them yourself. Starting your own projects is an option too. Just know you can do it and you'll learn a lot by your mistakes over time! Best of luck.

Depends on what kind of a person you are really. Things that I'm intersted in I prefer to learn on my own pace, which is probably 18hours a day (much faster than the norm).

Also the diploma is useful for getting a job but if you're intersted in doing your own thing keep in the mind that the diploma is of zero use (maybe some social proof if you choose to teach others Internet marketing)

What you will learn if you look around this industry is that most people are failing not through lack of knowledge. Not by a long shot. In fact I would say the reason so many fail is because of information overload.

So you don't ned a diploma to learn this business. The main thing those who are successful have over the others is they are action takers who persist at things until they make them work.

Look, by the time you graduate, everything you'll learn will probably be outdated.

If you want to learn internet marketing, learn from people like Frank Kern, Eben Pagan, and the good guys over here.

But here is something more important: internet marketing is just marketing. The medium is different, the principles are the same.

Start with a solid (and cheap to buy) book like "Scientific advertising". I think you can even get a free PDF of it (it's probably public domain now).

EVERYTHING you'll learn is just an expansion of what's contained in that book.

As for the technology, that's truly the easiest part. Once you're truly focused, you'll get results.

Then again, it depends on what you want. You can also choose to get a diploma. In which case you might get a high paid job in some corporation. Just be aware of the fact that sooner or later, that company will be taken down by guys who learnt this stuff in the trenches.

It may be a good thing to get a diploma on IM but most gurus and specialists I know did not have one

Based from experience, you really need to just pick your top IM gurus online, read and follow their blog, start with your own marketing campaign- do not be afraid to commit mistakes and experiment till you get there. Have your own blog on IM and share your experiences and soon enough you'll have your own followers. In my opinion, it really does not matter if you have a diploma or not. But if you want to become known as an IM expert, start now, learn things the hard way -read blogs, do your own IM and share your experiences once you've established yourself in the industry.

    Good luck!

My advice would be no as everything you need is right here on the forum. You would find out that within a week of being on one of these courses.

Unless your planning on working for an agency or something then maybe so but really if you can show what you did and what you set up online that will be your diploma right there !

I am actually a student of Brighton College taking that internet marketing course and we are the first batch of students.

And as what everyone is saying here you learn by doing & I have been doing IM since I was a teen and have learned lots of things on "how to make money online" and if your reason to take the course is to learn to make money online then the course is not for you I think. The course is to prepare you for a professional career/offline marketing where you are going to learn these topics focused on helping a real business to do online marketing and you will also have to take Adwords certification and get a real PPC budget for a school project.

I am in the course because I want IM as my career but of-course I am not going to stop my sideline gig's that earn me extra income with affiliate marketing. And I am happy that while I was taking the course I already knew most of it and now my thinking got rewired about what IM really is and is not just for people to earn money online but to help businesses too.

We are almost at the end of the course and after this I will have to find a job and will look for work(not so worried about not getting hired because it is a in-demand career). I know most of the people here do IM so that they can escape the 9-5 job but IM is what I am really passionate about and don't mind getting a 9-5 job

So you took the course and found it very informative, yet you broke one of the biggest rules in IM directly after: copyright infringement.

You cannot simply record/copy someone else's work and sell it off as your own. That's not how IM works, and you have gone against the WSO forum's rules.

OMFG, $10k for a piece of paper that says you know SEO and IM...

That's just silly. I mean props to you for doing the course and actually doing something, rather than sitting your a$$ playing games, but I believe no course is going to give you the knowledge of how to make a living from IM.

It's something that you have to crack yourself by trial and error over the months/years of experimenting.

Yep! $10k is way to much. I was in favour of diploma only because it gives you a structured training on new / unknown sectors of Digital Marketing. The one I did (GOMP ) was Rs. 28000 i.e. approx. 500$ only. It was definitely worth it.

I think getting an IM diploma defeats the purpose because it's just an expensive piece of paper that "qualifies" you to work as someone else's employee. I (company) get a lot of applications from recent graduates in Marketing, Communication, Design, etc etc and I can honestly say we NEVER - EVER kept one for more then a couple weeks. This is just my view of it, most probably there are some uni's who teach good stuff... but man, these folks don't even know whats jquery, a backlink, a marketing plan for a offline business, or how to do simple stuff as buy a domain name and configure Wordpress in Cpanel - it's insane.

And yet, they proudly say "I am a graduate in Uni yadda yadda in Marketing and Design!!"

I too believe that doing is the best way of learning. That's true in digital marketing as well.
There are an number of free resource available online but they are helpful if you have a prefect idea of what you are looking for. It requires a lot of time as well; much more then it will take if there is someone to guide you through.
Around a year back I too was on the same ship as you are now.
Thankfully I was able to pinpoint an online course that is a blend of self learning structured instructive learning.
After this long too I am glad I did that course. It helped me a lot. Look at the GOMP Details for the structure of the course or subscribe to
Gutsgo eMarketing iDigest if you want free updates on Digital Marketing.
Hope this helps to make you the choice that is right for you.

Why would you even want a Diploma in Internet marketing? I mean once you have started doing Internet Marketing, you are already an Internet marketer and all you gotta do from there on is learn as much as you can about IM. Notice that I'm talking about "doing", action as opposed to just "reading about IM". And if and when you have become good enough at IM, you definitely wouldn't want to work or be employed by someone else irrespective of the salary and benefits! That's just how liberating IM is...so get started today and put away your diploma thoughts (trust me nobody will care what level of education you have once you have become a successful Internet Marketer - and the only way to become one is by actually doing Internet marketing :-)

I agree with almost everyone that said the education is in the doing. With something like IM, you can take classes and read as much as you want, but the best way to have success is to just get out there and do it. Its not like there is that much at stake if you dont succeed right away.

If you fail, figure out why you failed.

If you do better that you thought, figure out why and do it again.

YES just keep in mind making money online is not internet marketing. Making money online is affiliate marketing however learning internet marketing will give you everything you need to succeed in affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is nothing but business models of making money online. Those models are

    - AD Sense sites
    - Product Review/Amazon Zites
    - Blogs on either on topic, all topics, a specific set of topics
there are 3 models to blogs (curated, aggregated or full text)
    - List Building and email marketing

    Full Business Models
    - forums
    - membership sites to premium content

thats all i can think of right now.

Your goal is to choose one and only one, learn how to use it, apply what you learn and dont learn anything else until you start making money with it.
