Biggest Reason Why People Fail in Internet Marketing

With the downturn of the economy, the loss of jobs and skyrocketing costs, everyone wants to make a little more money. While the economy as a whole may have its problem, there is still one market that is growing and even booming which is the Internet.

Unfortunately, in spite of the enormous opportunities, many people still fail. Why?

I saw a recent survey of comments by people: It is because
They don’t take action
They take action too quickly.
They learn the wrong stuff from the wrong people.
They are not committed to their business.
They do not treat their business like a business.
Which of it is the real cause?

Information overload, not believing in their acquired knowledge, lack of focus in the system that they've chosen e.g. jumping to another seemingly better method too quickly, 'shiny object syndrome,' not following through once they've finally started...

Different people let different factors affect them to various degrees I guess...

Learn the wrong stuff from the wrong people.

There are many of us willing to do the research and put in the long hours of work. BUT, if you follow the wrong path(learned from the wrong people) you can find yourself wasting months of hard work only to learn the hard way(from mistakes).

    My personal experience.

Oh, I am probably going to get beaten to death for this but... I see that you are from Singapore. I can only speak as a statistic loving US citizen, but....(this is where I will catch heck)....yes, in the US, "people are always so skeptical. Thinking this and that is fake, is untrue." ...Because it usually is HERE. If you research the statistics in the United States, almost 30% of ages 19-24 are on illegal drugs. Our average IQ for our country is only 95 if I recall. 20%+ have a serious mental disorder, only around 30% of our country has completed college, 15%+ of our country's adult population has not even completed high school.....ahhh, need I go on as to why we here are so skeptical to believe what others tell us. It is truly sad.

I for one, would cherish a reliable source from which I could learn. I seek knowledge out on a daily basis but have to be very critical as to what sources I can trust(in the US).

Good point but with all that being said...

The average income in the US is still higher than any other country.

That's a pretty powerful statement if in fact...

Not according to several websites like this one: Average Monthly Salary for 72 Countries in the World : 1-million-dollar-blog

Many places report that quite a few European countries are ahead of the US, measured by that parameter. (I suspect that their average costs of living are also higher, though). "Just sayin'."

Yep. Put all of those things together and what have you got? Basically just laziness. Most people fail because they don't want it enough. Look around the world and you'll see most of the people making all the money are the hardest workers and most of the people making very little to no money are the lazy ones. There are always exceptions to every rule but very few in this case.

I wouldn't call this a cause, but a hindrance and that is saturation of the marketplace and an increasing rate of viewer mental blocking and reflexes (ie Ad blindness and auto x outs)

Tonight I been doing some hard thinking on Gravity. While high gravity shows a somewhat good conversion rate in a broad sense, the competition is high for affiliates as well as many audiences on various networks from PPC,blogs and social media might be numb to offers.

Considering the above tonight I been looking at low gravity products. Of course this can be new products or been online for a while, it might not be a reflection of low conversions, but the lack of promotions. Affiliates tend to jump on the wagon when they see high gravity items.

      Agreed.

Most people are just lazy and /or not focused.

As an example : I give away some really good training videos to my list, which they need to download in 2 parts (2 different zip files) and about half the people only download the first set of videos and do not download the 2nd set... so that tells me a lot.

Technically, there is a pretty simple answer. If you assume doing a certain set of behaviors will produce results then a person fails either because they don't do something or what they do isn't a set of behaviors that's effective. We can trace this and ask ok, if they aren't doing an effective set of behaviors why not? They lack the skills (note that there is a noticeable difference between skills and knowledge, it is skill that creates results). Why do they lack the skills? Because they haven't trained in the right things/haven't had the right training. People have to train themselves to some extent engaging in deliberate practice and seeking out training, but it certainly helps a lot to have great credible training resources.

This brings us back to the other alternative, which is why don't people take action to begin with? Ironically, people who have the skills tend to take action because it's relatively easy once you've got the skills but quite difficult if you don't have them. I believe the key here is momentum, enough failures will eventually grate on anyone what you need is to secure little wins and these wins build momentum until you get meaningful results. That's just a theory though at the end of the day you need to take action and it needs to be effective action, which means developing the appropriate skills.

    They don't want to.

Most people who start their own business want to HAVE a business, not to START a business or to RUN a business.

Starting and running a business takes hard work. Ask any WSO vendor: work doesn't sell. Tricks and cheats and loopholes sell. The magic button sells. Autopilot sells. Done-for-you sells.

    Bullshit sells.

    Truth doesn't.

Which means if you want to make money helping people start their own business, you need to (a) target a lot fewer customers, and (b) charge a lot more money.

Or you can target the unwashed masses and charge dirt, so you can make money PRETENDING to help people start their own business. You'll never go broke doing that.

Most people buy a WSO or other infoproduct for the same reason they pick up a travel brochure: to look at it and read it and imagine going there and doing that.

Then they throw it in the trash and go back to their shitty job until they feel like crap again, when they will go get another brochure to look at.

A sufficiently miserable person just goes around collecting WSOs until they run out of money, then complains that WSOs don't work.

Which is a lot like collecting a bunch of travel brochures and then complaining that they haven't taken you anywhere.

      EXACTLY!

To add to the discussion, I believe a lot of people fail because they don't treat their business like, well, a business. Even if they find the right niche, the right market, the right product, the right method, they go at things half-assed and then wonder why nothing works.

Sure, you can make a couple bucks here and there doing things by the seat of your pants, throwing crap against a wall and seeing what sticks, but in the end you will have a lot more bad days than good, and you will always be trying to stay up with the latest trends.

But if you treat this like a business, and develop processes that work for you and stick with it (not getting distracted by the magic buttons) then, and only then you stand a chance of being successful.

It all boils down to having the right idea to sell to a market that wants it...at a price they can afford and you can make a profit.

I think the most common problem is that they learn so much until they are confused on the actions that they need to take in a systematic manner. Once I start to focus on one system and simply just follow the instruction by taking action, I start to see results. It works that way and will still works in the time to come.

People love to LEARN, they don't like to DO.

The successful people are the ones that DO. Plus, they learn more by doing.

I have done it myself. Bought the latest, greatest manual on the best-ever marketing technique. Couldn't wait to read it because all I'll have to do is click a few buttons and just wait for the overnight success to roll on in...

Almost got high with excitement reading it from start to finish - This Is The ONE!!!

Eventually, over a short period of days, that excitement waned and turned into - "This crap doesn't work".

My problem was that I never did any of the actions outlined in the how-to manuals I purchased. The methods worked for other people because they put them to use.

The best way I could explain it is like this:

You can read a cookbook from cover to cover... But if you don't do any of the things the cookbook says to do, at the end of the day, you'll still be hungry.

I'd say top of the list being lack of perseverance.

It is not just Internet Marketing that has this high failure rate, how many people take up Martial Arts classes with the idea of being Black Belts and how many actually get there? A few won't through no fault of there own because of injuries or sickness maybe but everyone else has the potential of becoming a black belt but it is just the ones who persevere and put in the hard work that will make it.

I am agreed. The biggest reason is that mostly marketers never analyze the results of their failure and if they analyze than they never change their strategy which make them failure.

Persistence, or lack of it, is the main reason why people fail at internet marketing. They expect to make a lot of money immediately with just basic knowledge, and when they don't see the profits, they quit.

The reason is this is a real "Business"
But, people do not treat it like a business, instead they treat it like a "Job" and think that all they need to do is put in some mindless hours and will get a paycheck.

It is mostly a lack of "creativity" People try to do exactly like the next guy/gal, that is why there are so many threads asking exactly where and how something is done.

If I say that I made $x,xxx.00 using 7 search, instead of going to 7 search and learning and finding sites that host 7 search ads and look at the ads and see which ones keep popping up and seeing the types of products, then figuring what products they could market. Then actually "Do" something and learn from their mistakes. They just respond to the post demanding specifics.

Because starting a internet business is so inexpensive, especially if you market affiliate products, people tend to walk away and have their Weekends off, go clubbing all the time that their business fails.

If someone starts a brick and mortar store they do not just rent space, get insurance, have utilities turned on, then just take a month off doing other things. The business takes 100% of their time.

It is not about "Taking Action" that is just a Buzz word that internet marketers have adopted to explain failure.

It is about learning what a business is and how to make a business successful, and it is about commitment of time, energy, and some money.

Just to add (my two cents worth) to the list, namely

    1) They are not thirsty enough and give up easily
    2) Always procrastinate
    3) Laziness
    4) Wrong perception

They don't stick with one thing at a time and get constantly distracted by many other things. Its called the shiny object syndrome.

Here's how it works; lets say you are working on something right now like setting up a squeeze page, ok? Then you search the web and an idea captures your attention like "making money with cpa offers". You get "attracted" in a way that you get totally distracted from the bigger picture and go off in tangents instead of remaining focused on the goal. (setting up the squeeze page or whatever else).

So why it is so dangerous?

Because you always start something but get distracted and NEVER finish everything. Plus there's the risk that you can spend COUNTLESS hours and lots of money on that "new thing"(in this case making money with cpa offers) without even knowing if that thing is right for your business.

There is another thing that is very dangerous and leads to failure; the search of perfection that automatically brings to ENDLESS procrastination. Here's what happen, you wait for "the perfect moment" before starting your online business, but the reality is that there isn't a "perfect time" to launch it.

You just need to start something, focus on ONE THING at a time and MASTER it before starting something new.

So just pull the trigger, your business will be evolving forever!

      All the success

I would also say... At first it's overload, than shiny new objects all the time passing near their eyes...
But I think the root of all that is... running business online doesn't need to be done. I buy software, know nothing of it, and that software will do all, and I can turn it on, and go play with my children on some special location bla bla.
No one realizes that in order to build autopilot You need to work for 3 - 6 months like a slave... to create a real autopilot money. Not just something that will pass in few months.

Lack of direction, which leads to lack of focus.

If I came into internet marketing knowing exactly what to do and how long I should spend doing it, I would not have suffered from shiny object syndrome.

Most people go from product to product because they don't know any better. Once they realize that nothing is working, they notice that their problem is a lack of focus on one thing. Unfortunately, it takes awhile for someone to realize that they have shiny object syndrome.

If you think hard about it, ANYONE can succeed. They just need to follow this pattern:

    Implement
    Measure results
    Make changes
    Implement
Keep repeating until you get the results you want

As mentioned above, one of the most COMMON WAYS to get off the track above is to run after new 'shiny objects.'

Not knowing what you're doing is the first problem.

Knowing what to do, but not doing it is the second problem.

And knowing what to do, then doing it and getting a lackluster initial result and quitting is the third problem.

Few people have the focus and skills to succeed quickly. For most, it's an up and down thing that can take up to several years. Some may even abandon the idea and then come back to it after a time, like I did.

What made me come back was mostly the living example of a guy I met at some point who was making a ton of money online. That's the best thing to happen to a wannabe IM'er, to have some living proof that it can be done.

I do not want to repeat everything that was said but I think the main reasons why people fail are:
    - They feel overwhelmed with all the information and offers
    - They are waiting for too fast results
    - It's request more effort they thought
    - They have a lack of focus (largely due to too many information) instead of focusing on one method at the beginning
    - They make bad choice: niche product, target market, demographic
    - They have lack of technical skills
    - They have a bad attitude

    In one word laziness.

Ever notice that every time you turn around there is a new workout program or diet being touted as the "final solution"? Then people purchase it in droves, attempt it a couple of times and realize it takes work, so they shelve it.

Completely agree with the reasons stated so far. I'm guilty of them. I have a day job and that gets the best of me sometimes and then when things slow down I'm back thinking about how to get away from the day job and onto my internet enterprise.

But here is another reason I think a lot of people fail (and I am turning this around for myself):

Producing content. Goodness knows there is a lot of money to be made out there. But you have to write your ass off - whether you make your own products or sell someone else's (and let's face it, those are the two primary business models on the internet).

I'm always shocked and impressed at how much content the 6, 7, and 8 figure income producers have created.

I think one of the biggest reasons why people fail is their mindset.

If you believe in yourself and stay persistent you will over come the hurdles and obstacles one at a time and when you look back you will see how much you have learned from each one you overcame.

Believe in yourself and have a clear vision of where you are going to end up and a clear plan on how to get there!

My biggest downfall is desire and perseverance, i have an idea that i think will do well and then when i consult anyone that has a difference of opinion i get discouraged and scratch the idea, what im saying is stick to it if you believe, afterall you cant expect anyone to believe in you if you dont first believe in yourself and your ability to make your ideas a reality

I think it's a combination of laziness + lack on concentration in a specific area.
As well know the world of internet marketing is HUGE. So many different areas to tackle and things to learn but not many people zone into just one area.

#1) people fail because they don't become geniune experts at what they're selling and customers can smell the bs a mile away.

#2) failure to focus and take massive targeted action

they try and lazy their ways out of things by becoming affiliates and always jving vs becoming AUTHENTIC experts and working hard in service of their customers. There's no shortcuts, you've got to actually deliver useful help to an audience that you've earned the trust of.

For success (I've made a fulltime living online since the 90s): Being a workaholic genius isn't required, but it helps a lot. Role models like Brian Tracy are great. People who actually help.

Also IM is not for most people. When I look around at other adults I know who are brick-and-mortar folks, I realize they're light years away from all the information marketing, copywriting, video production, graphic design, professional speaking skills they need to make it. Competing against professionals is extraordinarily challenging, and most won't make it.

    Shiny object syndrome !

Falling under "learning the wrong stuff from the wrong people."

I see affiliate marketing as just an online corporate industry. Your still busting your ass to make someone else's dream ! True money lies in product creation ! And being unique!
