How do you find out if the niche you are targeting will be profitable?

How many keyword searches a month should be there to make enough sales?

    If people are buying magazines about it, or buying magazines which include articles about it, then it's potentially profitable.

    If there's a reasonably wide variety of people continually advertising on Google's AdWords, then it's potentially profitable.

    That has no relevance at all to me. I see that it does to other people, and that it can (perhaps) be indicative of overall search engine traffic availability, but it's not helpful to me, because compared with many traffic sources those are mostly not potential visitors who will opt in or buy anything anyway.

    If that niche has related physical products, check amazon. If people are buying it then that is profitable. Check google keyword tool as well for the keywords. if people are looking for it (using buyer keywords) then that is profitable.

      This is what you need to look for with Google Keyword Tool.

      Just because something is getting a ton of searches doesn't mean it is going to be profitable.
      Just for example the term "chicken breast recipes" get's roughly 74,000 Local Searches(Exact Match; if using Google Keyword Tool always click exact matches). People searching for these aren't really going to be buying anything online, maybe a few things at the grocery store that's it.

        Great answers, thanks a lot!

        I can imagine that numbers of keywords indeed won't be able to convert. So what phrases do you search for when looking for buyer keywords?

        Is 'how to' any one of them?

          Are the keywords very competive?

          For keyword you have to look at how precise they are to the searchers goal. As an example:

          I am looking to buy a drum kit.

          A general research keyword:

          Drum kit, drums for sale etc.

          Now if I knew what brand I would be more detailed in the keyword selection:

          Tama drum kit, Tama drums etc.

          Now if I know what brand and also type then it gets even more detailed:

          Tama Artstar, Tama Artstar II, Tama Artstar custom

          As you can see the more detailed the better as it is closer to the searchers goal. You have to sort the keywords in research and buying types. Ask yourself what would you type in if you wanted to buy that product you are trying to sell today. Then you can tjeck if people are buying on ebay, amazon etc. with the buying keywords!

            That sounds about right, when someone types that in and you are able to capture that.. you're in!

            So when you sell an information product, what would be the searches for that?

            I've found that my niche has several keywords that are alike which are searched 300,000 and a couple 'how to .. book' searches that are done 1000ish monthly.
            There are also quite some books on amazon on the subject.

            Is that a good start or is it not much?

              This is just a guess but I'm guessing those search results are with the "Broad" Match type clicked and not the "Exact", correct? What do you get with Exact?

          You're right that some keywords are better indicators of a sale than others. For example "chicken recipes" vs "chicken recipes book." Of course marketers have been on to this for some time now, and that's why the latter example (book) would likely be a much more competive keyword to rank for. That said, marketers don't know everything about every market, and so there are still a lot of "hidden" converting keywords out there that the big players have overlooked. The only way to find those is through trial and error, immersing yourself so deep in a chosen niche that you begin to learn the language of those customers.

    Personally, I look for things like:

    buy [product]
    [product] review
    cheapest [product]

    Depends on what you are targeting too, you can use things like
    [product] tutorial
    [product] discount
    [product] coupon code

    Just think of things you would type in if you were searching to buy a product online

    If you see lots of consistent paid ads in your in your niche it a good indication people is making money in your niche, It very unlikely that people will repeatedly spend money on paid ads that is not making them money.

    One of the easiest ways before you build out any funnels is to direct link to check for buyer intent.

    Create a Facebook PAge (nothing flash, just get one up), and direct link. IF you are in the MMO or Dating niches, be careful but otherwise Facebook does not mind at all.

    Just cloak your links and run some ads.

    Use the info from other posters to find good targeting.

    If you run a bunch of traffic and no conversions, then perhaps the offer or the niche isn't a god one. All comes down to testing.

    I think it would be much better if people stopped focusing on keywords and did proper market research.
    If you do the proper research, you will know
    which keywords to target.
