How do you build a list quickly and cheaply?

Hi everyone,

I have been buying WSO's for years now but never quite knew what I wanted to do. I have finally realised that having a list is the best thing. The only WSO's that really worked for me and that I really enjoyed were ones about Squidoo but unfortunately Squidoo has changed and it is very hard to get lenses published now.

What I am looking for, if it exists, is a step by step plan on how to set up a squeeze page and get people to my list using cheap traffic.

I am still not ready to make my own products and don't have the cash to get any outsourced so would prefer to be an affiliate right now.

I have Aweber, am a member of several affiliate sites (Clickbank, Markethealth, Affiliate Future, JVZoo) and also Peerfly.
I have a Godaddy account and hosting and also have Optimizepress to make squeeze pages.

I am looking for a step by step course that will help me please if anyone has made money this way please recommend.

Thank you so much I feel at my wits end right now and have just had some red letters today for unpaid bills, I just don't know how I can survive like this and cannot do any more hours at work due to not being able to afford childcare and my husband works away too sometimes so getting a second job is almost impossible for either of us. Please help me, I just need some guidance, thank you all.

Regards Polly.

    Hi Polly,

    1) Write a report or record a video about something of value in your niche that you know about (i.e. How to Build a Cash Pulling Squidoo Lens) etc.

    2) Setup a Squeeze Page and give the report away for free.

    3) Set up a one time offer which sells a product. (this could be a fully blown course of your own that expands on what you are giving away for free).

    4) Then you need to drive traffic to the squeeze page - many ways to do this. Free ways include social media, giveaways, blogging, articles. Paid ways include Pay Per Click, Solo Ads, Media Buys, Banner Ads.

If you're cash poor and time rich, you'll have to 'grind' for a while or work out what you can give in exchange for traffic. OR.. if you have funds to invest you can build a list quickly using paid methods (you'll need to dig your own well).

It's hard when there are red letters coming through the door - tough to think clearly but what you have do in that situation is stay task focused and don't resign yourself to worry because that won't change anything.

    Good luck!

Very nice post. For me personally, I will find the ways to get the money that is required to grow the business. If that means I need to get a job, I will be willing to go and work to get the money. If the desire is really strong, you will be able to overcome all the obstacles

Im not an expert, but i see some people using this forum to list build. Get a free eBook and make a squeeze page giving it away to get them on your email list.

then become a war room member at put link in your siggy advertising it. Should get you some people to promote too.

If you already have Optimize Press, there are a ton of tutorial videos on YouTube that will take you step by step setting up your squeeze page an integrating it with your autoresponder.
As for traffic, if you have some money to spend, you could start buying solo ads to send clicks to your squeeze page, or you can start doing paid PPC advertising. If you don't want to spend money on advertising, you can upload videos to YouTube with links to your squeeze page, or find niche related blogs and see if you can do a guest post.

That kind of IS the step by step plan.

    1. Make an email followup series promoting affiliate products
    2. Make a squeeze page and put the list opt-in form on it
    3. Send traffic to the squeeze page

What part are you having trouble with?

As others have mentioned, there are only three steps involved in creating a list and making money from your list.

    1. Set up a squeeze page with a free offer that targets a specific group of people.
    2. add an opt in form on your squeeze page to collect their email addresses
    3. Create follow up messages that provide massive value -- then occasional promote products to your list.

As far as traffic goes -- there are thousands of ways to generate free traffic. Some are...

    - Blog commenting
    - Guest posting
    - Writing articles
    - SEO
    - Creating newsletters

The trick is to pick 2 methods you believe you would enjoy doing then stick to only those methods. Once you see results move to to 2 new methods.

After you have tried every method discard the ones that are not producing results - and focus on the ones that are.

My biggest advice is to offer a free product which is:
    • Worthy of buying
    • Provides great content
    • Is 'share' worthy

This way people are more likely to sign up if you have a product in return for there email!

I would add one caveat. Never rely on one strategy or source for traffic if it relies on sweat equity instead of money ESPECIALLY if it relies on ANY search engine, especially Google. A few years ago Article Marketing was so easy everyone was submitting articles to Ezine Articles and ranking for long tail keywords. It was 'slam dunk' easy, then "G" changed things around and people relying on article marketing (for organic rankings and traffic) had to evolve or go broke. If anything ever feels like a 'loophole' that may end one day, you can bet your bottom dollar it most likely will. That isn't to say you should not use what is working at a given time, but to be smart enough to be aware it won't last forever and you will need contingency plans in place.

That's what I am worried about DeanJames, spending so much time on a project for it to be taken away like Squidoo and Ezine, that is why I finally decided that I need to build a list, there is just so much info out there and I don't know where to start, it all seems really easy until I actually start to take the steps and get really stuck at some point like the traffic generation as the best way to get traffic, as far I can tel from reading up on the subject, is from paid but I have tried and came across hurdles mainly not knowing where the best paid traffic is and being able to afford it, free traffic has hurdles too like many sites/forums not allowing to use affiliate links in the signature.
Don't get me wrong I hold my hands up and agree that I do give up too easily at times but when I have spent time and money on projects and not made anything it just completely disheartens me, I'm a sensitive soul!!

Here are five things that may help you a little, then.

What are the essential things to know about list building?
Lists: How Long to Presell - Averages
        Website or squeeze page
Where to get reports to give away on opt in page?
        Autoresponders vs. Broadcasts

Well, if you've had that experience at Squidoo, you're among thousands of other people and in some good company there. But it sounds from your post above like that experience (whatever it was) has made you decide not to depend unnecessarily on sites you don't yourself own and control, which is a hugely important and beneficial thing to decide ... so you have actually gained from it, in that sense, anyway, and you know something really important that many aspiring marketers simply don't understand at all.

        Good luck!

I get between, well it varies so much but I can get 20 a day here if I post enough. I try to at least hit the forums for a day, mainly here but there are three or four more good ones.
Think about it, if you could just get 10 a day in the forums you would have a list of 3650 in a year and thats not bad for the work that comes out of it.

You do need to post relevant material in the appropriate sections for your signature.

Hi Polly, the problem partly stems from an over reliance on 3rd party platforms and commercial businesses that are accountable to their shareholders and bottom line profits (as well as regulators). A lot of the 'free' methods have their 'day in the sunshine' before it all goes 'Pete Tong' and webmasters are left scratching their heads trying to figure out what 'Google' is going to do next. My view: Life is too short for all that. I've sent you a PM. Dean.

Use PPC, solo ads, and blog advertising. These are quick - and consider advertising on high traffic sites in your niche. Then back all of this up with free marketing that will lower your overall costs of paid advertising.

..when it comes to list building - it all comes down to traffic in the end..

and before critics jump at me to explain that the opt-in/follow-up/upsales/downsales bla bla are important - I want to let them know that I know that.. but the ENGINE, the CORE of any list building process will be the TRAFFIC.

I'm insisting on this because the way you choose to bring in traffic will tell you the costs/scalability and in the end profitability of your business.

so my advice if you're a beginner - before getting caught up in all the opt-in/follow-up/upsales/downsales bureaucracy, just figure out the best/cost effective way(for you) to bring in traffic.

the others are details that you will tweak & improve afterwards

Excellent post and one that I definitely agree with. The only way to really test and tweak how effective your list building is, is if you are already getting a good amount of visitors to your site. Without getting enough traffic, you won't be able to build a big or stable list.

@warmit - I have nothing against Dean Holland at all, he's most probably a super cool guy. Heck, his first name is even cool like mine ;-)... but I would caution Polly against promoting his products at this stage as a core business strategy. If she wants to do that as an income stream later as an affiliate when she has a list in place, that's cool... but here I do have to say I have promoted one of his systems in the past and he shut the whole thing down rendering all affiliate links redundant (and the income that went with it). When people have family that depend on them for their income, that kind of thing isn't pleasant, so I would advise Polly to look after her own interests and build her own business. No offence to Dean Holland I know he has been around a few years now, but the thing with one man figurehead operations is that they can shut down products and affiliate links fast, which leaves that affiliate devoid of any income... it's a flimsy way to operate and I would advise any affiliate to only promote products like that when they don't DEPEND on that income stream for their 'daily bread'. Seriously, I have seen it happen too many times now and often these things don't pay out for a couple of months. I don't know how quickly DH pays out but there are businesses out there that pay weekly. Clickbank pays out weekly as well like clockwork.

Take all the information that you have learned from buying so many WSO's and create an ebook out of the information. Don't copy the exact content but in your own words write what you have learned.

I am sure that there is something that you can teach people from the stuff that you have learned.

Create an ebook with that information.

Put up a blog and begin blogging to get people to know you. When they get to your blog, give them that ebook that you have created.

This will begin building your list. Once they are on your list, begin building a relationship with them and selling products.

It takes time, but it does work.

I was same as you before, bought a lot of wso and didn't make a dollar online.

And finally I found out a list is what I need, just like u.

Since you have bought a tons of wso, I bet you know a bunch of info on the IM niche.

Combine the information you know and make a free report that can help people who don't know what to do or lost in the IM.

Regarding to the squeeze page, you can do a google search like "squeeze page example" or squeeze page templates". That's how I did before. It's free.

    You can drive traffic using:

    1. Forum
    2. Video
    3. Facebook Ads (cheap if u target the right audience )
    4. Guest blogging
    5. You can use squdioo to post your article with a link to the squeeze page (I think you know squdioo better than me)

After u get some subscribers, you have to provide massive value and next, promote good products to your list. It would be better if u use the product personally because you can give honest review.

You are on the right track, i have the same feeling before and i know you can do it.

So don't stop yourself, only you can make it happen.

Polly, bare this in mind. Don't worry too much about how much each individual lead is costing you, because if you are making your ad spend back on the front end of your funnel you are in effect getting your leads for next to nothing. Try and get the elements right one bye one. First off try small batches of traffic using solo ads and see how your funnel is working. only then will you want to ramp things up traffic and expense wise.

      Polly,

I'm sorry you're struggling so much and I really DO sympathize. We've all been there.

A couple of points for you:

      1. As someone else mentioned, relying on third-party sites like Squidoo is a very unreliable way to run a business, as you've discovered. The goal is to take as much control of your business as possible.

This includes having your own website (instead of relying on third-party sites like Squidoo) and NOT relying on or spending most of your time trying to do SEO and get traffic from Google. These should be happy byproducts, nothing more. (There are much quicker, more reliable ways to get traffic.)

      2. Do you even know what niche you want to be in and product you want to sell? You sound like you have no idea. A big question you need to answer is "Do I want to be in the make money online niche?"

If you really love online marketing, then go for it. But realize it can be a very tough market. Don't do it just because it seems like the thing to do and the thing that will sell.

Otherwise, you need to think about what you love. What are your passions and interests? What will you sell? WHO will you sell it to?

(Someone in this thread mentioned marketing your own WSO or otherwise building your business here. This suggestion is made without any consideration for your niche and audience. If you're not in the MMO niche, then marketing here is a complete waste of time.

It's one of my pet peeves with suggestions I see here. So many of them are completely inappropriate and irrelevant. )

Remember, the WHO (your target audience) is more important than the WHAT (whatever you sell). Pick your target audience wisely and be as specific as possible.

Just as an example, let's say you choose "women" as your target audience for whatever you're selling.

But don't just pick "women". Pick moms -- or working moms -- or working women -- moms of toddlers -- or... How old is she? Does she work or not? Does she have kids? How many? Is she married? Etc.

See how I've drilled it down from "women"?

The more you niche it down, the more specific you are, the more likely you are to be successful. This is critical. I can't possibly overstate it.

      3. The process for making money online is:

      Traffic > Opt-In > E-zine > Sales page.

      Traffic + Opt-In = List
E-zine (and other regular communication like videos) = relationship with your list
      Sales page = sales

It's just that simple. (We IMers tend to overcomplicate things.)

If you have a site (Optimize Press, right?) and AWeber, you already have most of what you need. Now commit to sending a regular, weekly e-mail newsletter (e-zine) at a minimum, along with special offers.

Once all of that is in place, you need to focus on sending qualified traffic. This is an ongoing, never-ending task. You'll be doing it for all of the days you're in business. Everyone wants the magic pill: that ONE traffic method that will send a flood of qualified traffic to their site.

But the reality isn't the ONE traffic method that will send a flood of traffic to your site. It's knowing a couple dozen ways to get a trickle of traffic to your site. Then scale all of the multiple traffic sources. It will compound to bring you that flood of traffic you're looking for.

As Dan Kennedy says "I don't know of ONE way to get all the clients you need. But I DO know dozens of ways to get ONE client." It's a critical mindset shift.

But don't waste your time until your foundation (website, freebie, squeeze page, offer, etc.) is in place. Until it is, you'll be wasting your time and money trying to get traffic.

WSOs can have some great info (assuming it's a legit WSO). But the glaring problem with ALL of them is that they only give you a tiny slice of the whole picture. I'd say relying solely on WSOs is a huge mistake. I've never seen one that even gives you the basic structure I've laid out for you here.

    Hi,
My heart goes out to you. Since you have very little money, it sounds like solo ads, ppc and the like are out of the question. That just means that you will have to do forum posting and blog commenting. Those are free, but, it will take some time to build a list. You have to use Twitter and Facebook as well.
My blog can teach you how to set up a squeeze page and there is also a free template called the 90 second squeeze page.
If you post questions on my blog, I will answer them.
That's about it. PM me if you are interested in the URL.
    Good luck
    Geri Richmond

I would say go out there and try safe swaps (solo ads). For 100 clicks you have to pay like 40$. I think it's a good way to build a list and quick.

On my own, when I start to build a list, I usually start off with a free eBook with some valuable follow-up emails. I am using this forum to build some traffic in order to build me some list. When I have reached 300 subs, I used to do some ad swaps and solo ads to grow my list even more.
