      I usually say:

"Sell downloads" "Web design" stuff like that which is broad
and hopefully makes for no endless amount of questioning.

Not strange at all, I still remember the day we bought my father-in-law a top of the line outdoor grill for Father's Day while my wife was on maternity leave. He hasn't questioned my "trouble finding real work" since.

That was one of the best purchases I've ever made.

There is a funny disconnect at times with some "general internet users". They surf about the web, going from page to page until they find something they wish to purchase. They never realize that what really happened was that they were led around by a structured link building strategy so that they would end up as targeted traffic heading to professionally written sales copy that will then try to convert them into being a customer.

Hmmm. I'm past my late fifties - into my sixties - even have a geezer license to prove it, and I certainly am not past the threshold. AAArrrrgggghhhhh!

Why, after more than 40 years in business I've learned more than most young people have forgotten. Wait, that's not right. I've forgotten more than most young people have forgotten. No, that's not it. Oh darn. I forget what I was I was going to say.

People are really pretty clueless when it comes to business, let alone internet business, and so it's kinda tough to explain it to most. The best thing to do is use a term that everyone knows to describe your work "Freelance writer (if you write products), software developer, web designer, marketing consultant, etc."

If you're an affiliate marketer, you can say that you work in ecommerce selling digital products, and if they press further you can explain that you sell informational products or ebooks and/or whatever other products you sell.

It really depends on who asks.

My usual answer is that 1. I am a writer and 2. I help Moms work from home and make money (because my main niche is work at home moms).

But if I am not talking to a mom, then I just say 1. I am a writer and 2. I help people find ways to make money from home.

The reason a lot of us get tired of answering that question is because when you tell people you make money on the internet a lot of people either think you are a con artist or they are super interested in learning to make money from home that they rope you into a free 3 hour coaching session rather than letting you enjoy the party, gathering, or what ever event you happen to be at.

I got started online as an artist putting my artwork online so I usually just tell people I'm an artist. If they have further questions, I would prefer talking for 10 minutes about drawing pictures rather than delivering a free seminar on article marketing.

Why would you not just defer all the questions, trade emails, and then refer them to the best course that you learned from or a resource like a forum? "Hey that's a great question but a little more heavy than normal party conversation so here's my email and email me if you are interested in learning more" (80% of the time they won't) Them receiving of 3 hours of "free" coaching does not reflect on them taking advantage of you, it shows that you are caring and require the skills to value your time more and gently brush them off.

Being able to answer that question with "I make a living online" is actually one of the reasons why I'm getting into IM. I always dreamt of saying that! You see, I love to blow peoples mind and if that answer doesn't then I'm pretty sure ">>How much?<< >>Oh, about $8000 a month<<" will. Also I think it's great to share the energy of success with others, whether they actually get it or don't.

So I don't quite understand why members here sound annoyed or apprehensive about this form of questioning since to me it's a motivation.Previously I didn't feel comfortable when people asked what I was doing for a living because usually the answer didn't really reflect who I am. With IM though I know it does. I can't picture myself trying to evade these type of questions but maybe there will come a time. Of course only because I got tired of explaining the same thing all the time.
