Warrior Forum Goes NoFollow

Looks like the forum has gone nofollow for user created links. This includes signature links, profile links, links within posts, and links in the paid blogs.

I think this is a recent change. Maybe there is a discussion elsewhere I haven't found, as this would seem to be an important change.

IF this is so then this is another spam-fighting strategy I guess.
Less in incentive for spammers and a loss for the legitimate.

Whichever way, forum profile and sig are not meant to inflate your ranking..

Besides, it stopped working after the Penguin..

I believe WF just saved a lot of people some stress they would have never known themselves.

Good, good ... that might cut down on the spamming a little, if people know about it.

I'd have wanted to proclaim it from the rooftops, myself. But subtlety was never my forte.

Erm... it would still work after Penguin. Penguin cracked down on 'overoptimization.' It didn't kill SEO. If your BL footprint is 'natural,' you're good to go.

Regardless, it's a GREAT THING that WF no followed its links. People should focus on EARNING backlinks instead of BUILDING them. Big difference.

No bother here. If it helps keep the spammers out of here, then I'm all for it. Anyone who is here just for the do follow links from a forum sig isn't really meant to be here in the first place.

Spam is obviously a big problem. The second part of your statement is more complex. For instance, members pay to have their articles posted and one of the selling points is the SEO value of the forum. There are also several forum areas serving as ad opportunities.

Using the articles forum for illustration, the question may be whether the value of paying the forum to host articles is only to get traffic to the forum and then benefiting from a portion of that traffic clicking through your article resource box link / forum signature link - or does the value also include the benefit of the forum linking to your destination page for SEO purposes?

The irony, regardless of the answer, is that when a value proposition is made on the basis of the SEO power of the forum to get traffic, some of that power is based on incoming "dofollow" links to the forum. If the forum is unwilling to reciprocate with beneficial outgoing links, it may find it does not receive as many incoming links.

That is part of why I said this is an important change. The WF moved on from being "just a forum" long ago.

          Brian,

All sorts of things to look at with a situation like this. The biggest I see are:

          * What is the effect in the SERPs if Google decides to slam sites with obviously spammed links that are dofollow?

          * How much damage is done to the members' experience of the site by the link spammers?

Even to an SEO near-illiterate like myself, the answer to the first seems obvious. "Obvious" is so often wrong, though, that I wouldn't bet much on that impression.

          The latter, though, is clear.

Spam is a constant irritant online. In this forum, it was at a steady, low level for a long time. The exception was the SEO section, where it was a constant nagging presence, mostly in the form of an army of witless sleazeballs posting drivel for the sig links.

When Allen switched back to free membership and the Chinese outfit hit us with that mega-flood, it pushed a lot of members over the edge. Some stopped visiting entirely. Some regular reporters of spam stopped reporting anything. Some went right over the line and started reporting things that didn't even look like spam. At one point, fully half the reports I'd see in a day were "This is annoying/I disagree with it. Delete it."

It would be hard to overstate the damage done by these destructive parasites. Almost anything that reduces their incentive to post here is worth doing.

As far as the article directory... That was so badly abused by the overwhelming majority of people who posted there that I have no personal sympathy for any potential hit they take from the lost "link juice."

This honestly doesn't bother me at all.

I enjoy the direct traffic that I generate from this forum to be honest..

But I don't really care about SEO now adays at all.

But I do enjoy communicating here.

Also, I've noticed a lot of spammers around these parts lately making really weird one line comments etc.

If this is a mechanism upon which to eliminate junk content on the website, all the power to em'.

PS: SEO backlinks are overrated anyway right?

That's it... Panda, Penguin, now this?! My SEO career is over.

But really, probably a good thing. If that keeps more idiots out of here that already occupy this forum, I am all for it.

I don't think WF links gave that much juice anyways. If it cuts down on spam I am all for it, but I think the bots just want eyes on their offers, instead of link juice. That why you get the " cheap nikes " spam

I am self-admittedly an SEO beginner and really hate the stuff.

But do we honestly think Google pays much attention to what links are dofollow and nofollow?

My interpretation of SEO has always been that smart search engines like Google will pay big attention to things we have no control over and cannot manipulate, and pay very little attention to those things we do have control over and can manipulate.

Nofollow and dofollow tags are things we have control over and thus I really don't think the difference between them gets as much attention from Google as people really think.

Is this not just an old wives tale people still believe. Does anyone actually have any solid data to back up the fact Google pay big attention to which tag a link uses?

Just curious because I can't see them changing a site's ranking based simply on whether or not the webmaster decided to use dofollow or nofollow tags on all their links.

But maybe I am wrong... it wouldn't be the first time. :-)

I have never used the links in this forum as links to rank with. It`s all about talking to marketers and linking back to services that could help them. So I don`t really care about this change, if it helps the forum, that`s great
