self hosted autoresponder on hostgator's shared server

So I have been toying with the idea of using a self hosted autoresponder. I like the idea of using mandrill as my 3rd party smtp service but had a question that I couldn't seem to get a clear answer on.

Every thread I came across all said you would need a VPS or a dedicated server but I thought that was the whole point of using a third party smtp service.

So I just went to the source and asked hostgator.

They basically said that their sending limits would not apply, it would be the sending limits of the 3rd party provider.

So my question is why does everyone say you need a VPS or dedicated server (and yes they know about the 3rd party smtp server and still say you need it).

Is there something I'm missing?

It only takes a few spam complaints from your competitors pretending to be legit list members for your self-hosted mailers to be flagged permanently. Not a good move. There's a reason why Aweber and other AR companies are in business.
