Homemade Banners

I find it funny but on my site, I have a few banner ads, one 250x250 above the fold. They rotate each time the visitor goes to a new page on my site.

The funniest thing I am experiencing is the clickthroughs. Only my own homemade banner works the best. It is the only one that has gotten all the clicks. None of the "pros" who claims their banner ads will work for me has gotten a clickthrough.

Why is that? I have no clue. Maybe you can tell me.

In the meantime,

does anyone have any suggestions how to improve homemade banners?

I want to test a few versions. Like I said, I can rotate them each time a visitor goes to a new page. I just have enough ideas to start off with.

    Perhaps you are using the same banners that are found on umpteen thousand websites, so people don't click as they are all old hat to them.

    Your custom banners being unseen, apart from on your own sites, may be the reason that people click them.

    Just my thoughts,

      Oh now that's a thought. Nothing beats making your own banners but it can be a real chore learning how to make them.

    Thanks for the terrific feedback already. I certainly want to hear more. Sell homemade banners? Exactly how would I go about that?

    I have to laugh a little because my homemade banner is very crude. I actually modeled it after a professional banner I am currently using. I got the idea from one of my AdWords campaign which has been very successful for me and tweaked it to "match" my site.

    I came up with a few ideas last night after I posted this and already am off and running. Just need to find a way to drive traffic to my site which is going to take some time but it is getting there little by little.

    Hmm... has anyone ever considered using banners to drive traffic to a post to get comments?

    It's been about a week since I last posted here but I wanted to let you know I have added a few more homemade banners on my site and they are firing like crazy. Most of the homemade banners are leading to posts on my site where I can warm up my visitors to the topic on hand before sending them off to see if I can get a referral.

    So far, I managed to generate 9 internal traffic and 8 external leads (sending them elsewhere). As a result, I generated 2 leads of which 1 converted.

    I am really curious to hear from those of you who have experience with homemade banners and what strategy worked for you and what didn't.

    for me and tweaked it to "match" my site.
    you may have the answer there - watching my own responses on web sites - I tend to ignore flash banners - specially the ones that scream for attention - I'm usualy after information and will follow attractive parts of the site that are congruent with site info- if I wanted to see ads I'd watch TV -

    As far as testing I would test: color, text, headlines, fonts, pictures, and size. Hope that helps.
