Is it worth getting traffic to your blog?

I figured an easy way to start IM is creating a blog making decent quality posts and promoting products in some of the posts. The problem is that I'm getting on average 30 views a day from using StumbleUpon to get views, (Only because I had one good day. I've only had about 10 today). I'm getting a few views from Google and news.google (I don't get why).

Anyway, my question is, is it worth trying to get traffic to my blog? And if so, what's the best way? I've heard SEO a million times, but I don't quite understand it. Right now, the blog is just a start, (hopefully) until I'm able to finish some programs to sell those.

Also, if you guys think that there's something else that I should do other than affiliate marketing, please tell me. The stuff that you could say that I'm "passionate" about aren't that marketable.

Thank you.

Yes you should drive traffic to your blog if you want to take it seriously.

Marketing all depends on what niche you are in, certain techniques work better in different niches. Organic & paid SEO is usually a common and effective practise.

If you're going to have a blog and use it as way to build your business and make money then yes, you absolutely must drive traffic to it. But rather than think about 'driving traffic', think more about engaging with your visitors and engaging with people on their blogs, on forums and via social media. Always strive to give value and put people first and the mechanics will largely take care of themselves.

As for SEO, you need to be conscious of it and give it attention but I don't think that you should focus on it first and foremost. I believe that it's much more valuable to focus on the quality of your content and of your engagement with people. 'Organic' traffic is all well and good but I believe that direct traffic is often of better quality.

At the end of the day, you want to give people a reason to visit your blog and a reason to want to come back. So you need to think of your traffic in terms of people rather than some abstract 'thing' or a load of numbers (although numbers are important).

without traffic you won't make any sales....

search for other blogs with the same topic and comment on some posts there (with a link back to your post), and do the same with forums... there should be forums for almost every topic, register on some of them and start to communicate (no spam!), put the link to your site into the signature.... these are just 2 ways to get some decent traffic....
another way would be Yahoo Answers! where you can answer questions about your topic and link back to your page...

I like these, except I made my nich too broad, which I knew I shouldn't have done in the first place.

I have a second blog that has more views on it and it's way more specific, but it's not popular and there's nothing I can post affiliate links to.

It does not matter how broad your niche is your goal is to rank individual blog posts on the first page of Google for their keywords - title of your blog post.

A broad niche can be better you will have more to write about Concentrate on ranking your blog posts highly, driving traffic, and everything else will fall into place.

completely agree with entrepreneurjay, try to rank the single blog posts.... check your keywords on the google keyword tool to see how many people are searching for them and how many competitors there are...in the end it's all about taking action, trial and error, improve your steps and processes.... getting better with what you do....

  • Rubik,

As mentioned by other members, yes you need to get traffic to the blog but keep in mind that this is not the end goal. The ultimate goal is to get people to buy from you or follow your affiliate links. So you should make sure that your blog has calls to action at the end of posts and that the content is designed in a way to move people from information search phase to following your link to buy.

With all the tips you have here, you should start brainstorming and come up with a good plan. A common mistake new marketers make is they pressure themselves to be progressive and productive each day and try to do what others are doing.

What I do, is promote my squeeze pages directly, and promote my blogs via email marketing.

I think buying traffic and pointing it to your blog can be feasible, but you BETTER be capturing leads on your blog via pop-up opt-in form.

Why not promote your list instead, and then promote your blogs via email marketing?

    Just my $.02

Signup for Aweber and use their light-box pop-up opt-in scripts.

I made a script to have 7 of them randomize on my blog.

        It's actually pretty elite.

You can check GetResponse, you can register for free for 30 days.

(Pretty sure they have similar pop-up light-box forms.

            If you make money?

            Then continue the membership.

            If you can't make money?

            Then cancel the membership.

Also, you can try Aweber for $1 for the first 30 days.

            Hope that helps.

If you have a blog that you're running, then I would really stick to the blogging realm with guest blogging. You can do it for free even though it'll take a couple of hours to write it and send out a few pitch emails. Blogs like to link back to other blogs in their niche because you can essentially "trade" traffic. Your traffic is theirs and their traffic is yours now. This is what guest blogging is designed to do in its natural form.

Create an account on Youtube and post a few movies. That is a great way to generate interest in your blog or web page. Selling on a blog requires that you post about that topic with a focus that is narrow or crisp. Remember to add new content every day of every year. I like to have with each 500 word post as least one image.

Guest posting to other popular blogs seems to work well, and sometimes can give you some link juice to your own site.

Banner ads, solo ads, and adwords could ad some visitors, but you have to keep track of the money spent and the money that each visitor brings in. It can be hard to break even, so most people pay for traffic to their squeeze page where they give away a short information product, then collect the email addresses so that they can market to that list again and again.

I think the best type of traffic comes from other websites that are related to your website.

Have you tried guest posts? What about blog comments?

Find a list of blogs that are similar to yours, contact the admin, and ask he would like a free unique article in exchange for a link to your website. Most webmasters will accept this proposal as long as the article is unique and carters to their audience. It is free content after all. Drop the link to your website somewhere in the article and wait for it to be published. Do this as many times as you can with different websites and you will begin to receive a steady stream of targeted traffic.

    I hope that helped.

Yes, it's worth getting traffic to your blog.

One of the reasons you've heard "SEO" a million times is that it seems like there are a million and two people selling SEO products, services and info. I'm always amazed at how much people will spend on "free" traffic that's totally dependent on the whims of the major source (Google, for those that were actually born last night ).

Starting with a more general topic isn't the worst thing in the world. Attracting an audience and interacting with them will allow you to then take your blog in whatever direction you decide to go.

There are many different ways of attracting traffic (aka "human visitors" or "real people"). All of the successful methods revolve around putting yourself and your message in front of people who are already interested in your topic, and that means being where they already gather.

This could mean publishing articles, videos, audios, etc., participating and engaging people on forums and via social media, and even letting some of them find you via search. Your blog can be the hub around which all of this can revolve.

Eventually, paid advertising can enter the mix and allow you to scale your visitor traffic in ways free methods just can't.
