I think you should pay for this service; your list is the most valuable asset in your online (and offline) business.

Anyway, I can say what I think NOT to use:
ListWire – I checked it for some case study, and they have too much ads on the way, plus the subscriber doesn't really understand what to do on every step.
MailChimp – I just heard that they don't like affiliates so much, and they can close your account.

Again, your customers (to be) list is your biggest asset. Take care of it!

A big problem with 'free', apart from those mentioned above, is that when you are successful and have a sizeable, responsive list you will want to transfer it to a more robust, better-featured service. Unfortunately, most reputable list management companies (AWeber and GetResponse, for example) are very picky about letting you import lists from other places, and particularly from the free services.

Instead, look at the introductory deals that those paid services offer. AWeber have a $1 1-month trial, GetResponse have a free 1-month trial and ImnicaMail have a permanent free offer for lists under 1000 that do limited mailings.

Some people seem to obsess about getting stuff for free, but where email marketing is concerned, those of us who make our livings at it know that it is well worth paying. Start the way you mean to carry on - professionally.

Outsourcing is the best option, forget about "free" which i think will be expensive in the long ran.

I agree with Lori, a list is the most valuable asset in your online business so you should pay for it.

You can check out Getresponse or aweber. Personally, i like getresponse more because they upgrade their system lately and has good customer support.

As every single post above me states, find other stuff to "skimp" on if you must "skimp" on anything... Email marketing is far too critical to risk quality...

On another tack, I wouldn't trust my list to open source software due to security concerns.

For some things, open source is fine. For others, it's like giving the burglars detailed blueprints of your store and schematics for your security system. Look at the number of Wordpress installs that get hacked unless you take measures to make it tougher during the install.

If you find an open source program that piques your interest, do some research to see if there are methods to harden your install against hackers.
