Each forum sets its own terms of use. Some allow you to include links in the posts, while many others allow them only in the signature. When you edit your profile or signature you can include your link there. Either way, the key is to make sure your posts provide value and add to the discussion. Providing useful information and insights increases credibility. Over time it makes people more accepting and more likely to receive your message. Posts that appear too salesman-like typically don't go over well.

I would stick with keeping it in your signature.

Very few forums will allow you to post links to your site inside your posts. You should only use your signature for that. You should also focus on giving value rather than getting people to click your link. If you are posting just for the sake of getting exposure for your signature people will very quickly see that for what it is.

So focus on helping and adding value and people will naturally want to check out the link in your signature.

To the OP: I see that you have put your link in your signature. But what's the point of 'just' putting a raw link? There is nothing there to tempt anyone to click it.

When using forums, look at what other people are doing and learn from them. Look at post #4, for example, or post #6. There the posters have bothered to use anchor text to make the link send a message and to mean something.

Think of your link as a mini classified ad - it won't get action unless it is written to attract it.

Most of the forum or blog owners did not allow that, try to read the rules if you still want to do it.

    Hey James!

I agree with Will and Martin.

The most important thing about being a part of a community (I feel) is to contribute some sort of value. To be genuinely useful to people. The first question you always have to ask yourself is: Am I helping?

Forums tend to have rules against posting links and advertisements in posts because of exploitation. Take a moment to think about what it'll be like if a forum got swarmed by new users coming in and posting links. It's very little effort for them, but it's very toxic to the rest of the community. It becomes harder to have good, meaningful conversations over the noise. Many of the best members of the community will get frustrated and leave, and the entire forum will begin to fall apart.

I'd actually argue that posting a link in a reply CAN be done, but only if you're doing it in a way that is clearly, clearly helpful. It has to be solving somebody's problem, and it should be clearly obvious. This can be risky, because it's very easy to get misinterpreted. You better be giving people a hell of a deal!

It's much safer to do the polite thing and simply leave your link in your signature. Then focus on being truly useful to people. That's how it works, as far as I can tell.

    Cheers.

Self promotion and advertising is not allowed in the discussion forums here. Dropping links to your sites or affiliate links is not allowed. You can put it in your signature, but saying "check my sig" in posts is the same as dropping links and is not allowed.
