Countries in the red-list

Hey warriors,

For one of my projects, I'm conducting a research on countries that are heavy on e-commerce scams: stolen credit cards, dodgy paypal accounts, uploading products to file sharing directories, etc.

Does anyone know the top-10 or top-20 countries likely to be in that red list?

TIA!

PS: this is not meant to be a country-phobia thread, but rather a statistic-based survey. So please let's avoid unnecessary flames or moral debates and stick to the e-commerce statistics, ok?

In my opinion India is the biggest country having tons of scammers there!

It's one of those "How many nations can we offend?" threads.

And the answer is: Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Malta, the US, the Bahamas, the British Channel Islands ... I'm joking. Joking, I tell you!

I think it's going to depend on what you include in the "etc.", perhaps, because there are so many attempted stocks and securities frauds about, these days - so much phishing and pharming? Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the US is fairly high on the list, simply statistically, i.e. because of its very high population with internet access. But I'm guessing that the countries in the top twenty will include Nigeria (and one or two neighboring countries?), Ukraine, Bangladesh, Russia, Albania (and one or two neighboring countries?) and China.

Burkina Faso - yes, indeed. Of course.
How could anyone ever, possibly, overlook Burkina Faso.

I think it is wrong to avoid a particular country because the majority of its nation has done stupid things. However, it is understandable that not many people would risk their money just to give someone the benefit of the doubt. My guess is that it depends on the person you work with and not his nationality.

I hope this thread will not turn into something we don't like...

Anyway, it's a good feeling when your country is not listed in any of these scam and fraud lists despite ranking 14th in the number of Internet users and 10th in mobile phone users...

    Be safe always..

You can safely add Romania to the list, and I promise I won't be offended. There are counties in Romania where the vast majority of young people do that for a living. That was a few years ago, I don't know how things are now, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out it's still a big issue.

  • personally i think a list like this is very beneficial since i know most of the time when people give their personal information out on sites that aren't in their country - they quickly become victims of identity theft. just giving up the simplest information like name, address, city, state, zip, and phone can get your identity stolen quickly. a watch out list such as this can save some from doing a bad internet transaction in the near future.
