Typically commenting is used for traffic generation and back linking and or link juice.

Not sure if you can make money just as a commenter in general. You need find sites related to your niche and you should have some kind of link that you refer others to that proves your point in the comment itself.

While some blogs will let you get an affiliate link dropped in, it is not the norm and you really want to have a real site you are linking to w/o showing the affiliate extension.

Also, your name becomes clickable when you add a website in the form field - and one of the best ways to use it is to make your name a keyword.

Best way to comment is to actually read the post the person has written, include some kind of real comment - not stuff like "nice post" or "really interesting" but try to form an opinion that takes more than 2 words to express and give back to the blog some how - don't be afraid to write a paragraph or two.

Thank you for the input. I guess this is the best way to avoid being considered as a spammer.

Blog commenting is for getting backlinks and traffic...it does not directly make you money. My best advice would be to learn to diversify your traffic portfolio. Do some blog commenting (if you can find a blog with Top Commentator plugin installed, awesome!), but also get traffic by other means.

Article marketing is a huge one.

You write an article which has links in your resource box which go back to your site. You submit the article to article directories - and people do click through to find out more.

Places like ezine article let you track the clicks that go through.

You can create squidoo and hub pages on your topic, and if you have decent enough content and keywords or tags you will get traffic which again, use links within the content to direct back to your site.

You can comment on Youtube and other video sharing sites to generate traffic. You can upload a video that will bring you traffic and you can put a link in the description.

You can use social bookmarking sites to help drive traffic to your own site. Use your facebook and twitter to drive traffic.

        There is an endless list.

You could also get hired by someone with their own products, and have them pay you a flat rate per blog you post on. That is also another option.

Don't make spam comments, write well written comments on the post at hand and you may receive a few hits from it, however the real value is in the backlinks you can generate this way.

Directly, there may not be much money. You may make some money providing a Blog commenting service but it won't really be worth it.

However blog commenting can really be effective when used as a tool for backlinks and traffic. That way, indirectly, you'll make money off it.

Don't forget to check if the links are actually "do follow"...otherwise the impact to your sites will be small or even zero...sure, you'll get the traffic if your comment is good.

I always outsource the blog commenting - but that is actually a part of your answer. If you strictly want to make money with blog commenting, you can provide a decent blog commenting service (don't forget about detailed reports) for other internet marketers.

However, if you are commenting to bring traffic and "link juice" to your website, it can be an exhaustive task - finding related blogs, writing informative comments, getting them approved ... In my experience I am better off outsourcing and spending my time doing things that I am more experienced in and that generate more value for my business.

If you become a regular contributor to blogs in your niche you can become an authority figure by those who are reading those blogs. This is the approach I would recommend for long term success.

You can of course just use blog commenting for backlinks to increase your rankings in Google or other search engines.

I would say that blog commenting is one of the top ten ways to generate traffic. But as others have mentioned you need to diversify the methods you use to increase your traffic and income.

If your taking the time to check out blogs in your niche I would recommend not only leaving comments but doing a "track back" to the post you commented on. Track backs are an excellent way of generating traffic and links back to your blog.

Commenting is used for generating traffic and back links. I am not sure, may be you can make money by:
1)if you are hired by someone to write comments and pay you, Or
2)if you can generate traffic that will help you to earn money.

There are two ways to directly make money from blog commenting.

The first, offer a link building service.

Find blog posts with high Pagerank and leave comments on those posts. You can find blog posts that have PRs of PR6 - PR3, and charge anywhere between $1 - $20 per comment you make.

The second, promote affiliate products or your own products.

Link your name and make it something catchy (for example - Joe @ Make $3,000 Per Month) to a product landing page, and comment like mad on related blogs.

I wrote two posts ages ago on the topic on my old blog. I've made thousands of dollars using the two methods.

Of course, the main thing you need to do is outsource this.

You can find users on forums that do forum posting for something like $0.05 - $0.1 per post... outsource the work to them, sit back and collect profits.

Now, this is a solid method that still works today. I stopped it a while ago, since I found something that worked better for me, but it still works.

In fact a couple days ago I had a conversation with a blog reader of mine who had made $30,000 since June 2008 just from blog commenting following the steps and tweaking a few of them by himself. If that's not proof of the power of blog commenting I don't know what is.

    Good luck!

I have to say it is a terrific method for beginners to start getting free traffic.

Here is a trick: sign up with Blog Lines or Google Reader, then subscribe to the most popular blogs in your market. You'll be alerted every time a new blog post appears on any of the blogs, and can be the first commenter.

It is crucial to be one of the first few commenters to get the most direct traffic.

Why stop with just blog commenting? Commenting / testimonials on other sites is good too.

Firefox has a nice plugin for highlighting links as do follow or no dofollow. That can help you see if your link will help in terms of SEO.

Comment Kahuna is a nice tool for finding blogs that match what your interest. Not sure how well the actual system works for posting your comments though.

I have my doubts about the benefits (in terms of link juice) of posting comments on DoFollow blogs. Interacting in comments on busy blogs related to your niche (regardless of whether they are DoFollow or NoFollow) will get you direct traffic though.

this is my basic understanding of backlinking until some one pointed out that there's really no point in commenting on no follow links.

There are also sites that pay people to post in discussions. Mylot is one, the pay is ridiculous but if you enjoy socializing......

Blog commenting rocks if you find a busy blog that is realted to your site.

Adding value in the comment is what is needed to turn it profitable, value and then a link to a money page.

So far I haven't tested blog commenting with a money page, but I think realistically being sincere about the post that was made and also adding some more value in the form of an opinion or suggestion, will help brand you as an epxert to the unsuspecting visitors.

There's 2 cents for blog commenting.

      Best Wishes
