Advice on a free report I'm writing about Laptop/Desktop PC issues

Hi Guys, My name is Cody and recently one of my colleagues
was having some tough issues with their Laptop. I realized a lot of
people had similar issues too and thought about writing a free
report on how to solve these issues as I'm a certified tech -
I want to call it 'How You Can Make Your Laptop/Desktop PC as Efficient as a Mac'

I just wanted some feedback as to what/if any issues you're
having so I have a better idea of what I need to include in the report...

If you use a laptop or desktop what are the biggest issues you find
as I would love to cover them

Thanks for your advice in advance!

-Cody Ash

  • Your proposed report title "How You Can Make Your Laptop/Desktop PC as Efficient as a Mac" might eliminate a significant segment of your intended audience (PC users) who may not necessarily be Mac worshippers and might be turned off by your title. Just something to consider.

Hello, thanks for your reply. That's a good point considering 90% of computer users are PC and
10% are Mac... I just hear all the time how people say nothing ever
goes wrong with their Mac's.... ( I know that when that virus went
out through Safari, it affected a ton of Macs!) I'm just wanting to address peoples problems with pc's and tell them how to fix it.
What are your idea's on a title? Thanks for your advice!

Regarding the title of the report... I don't think it's a very good one, because the vast majority of your target market will not know the first thing about Macs, so they won't be able to relate to your title very well. So to them, that title would make about as much sense as if it were...

"How You Can Make Your Laptop/Desktop PC more Efficient than a floccinaucinihilipilificationist".

        Know what I mean?

So not only will most of your target market not be able to relate to it, but also... it's a rather "ho-hum" (ie boring) title, in my opinion. It doesn't really "grab" my attention at all.

I think a much better title would be something along the lines of...

"How to drastically boost your computer's speed & efficiency, without spending one extra penny!"

OR if you want to ham it up a little more...

"Little-known secrets for drastically boosting your computer's speed & efficiency, without spending one extra penny!"

^ That's just off the top of my head so I'm sure it could be improved upon... but you get the idea. Just make sure you put your strongest, most exciting benefits in the title. Even if you give the report away for free, you still need to "sell" your prospects on wanting to read it. Copywriting 101.

I would like to know what process should be running all the time and which ones don't need to be. I don't know if that makes sense but sometimes when I check my task manager I check which processes are slowing down my computer and I have no idea if I can even turn any of them off or not.

My experience has been that once a PC (Laptop or Desktop) gets to be about three years old, some manufacturers (e.g., Dell and HP) do a lousy job of providing technical support. Such a machine may have several good years left in it, but if some component fails they leave you twisting in the wind.

If your report addressed that problem with practical advice, it would be very valuable to a lot of people.

I personally don't think any of the titles suggested above are that great or would be interesting enough to get people to download it.

I would probably do some more research before you get started on this. Having a number of people complain about computer problems doesn't necessarily mean a free report is going to go well. A lot of people complain about things they wouldn't even want to fix by themselves even if you gave them a free report. I think the sort of person having issues with their PC are also likely to be the same sort of person who would be very hesitant to do any technical changes or mods of their PC.

I know my parents are always complaining about things on their PC but I also know they would never in a million years read a free report on that OR even attempt to make any changes themselves.

The fact you are asking us for the most common problems to include inside your report tells me you haven't really done thorough research on this as yet. So that's where I would start. Survey these people you are referring to. Ask them what their biggest issues are. Ask them if they would be comfortable fixing the most common issues by following a step by step guide. The answers might surprise you. By surveying your customers you should also be able to come up with a much better title for the report based on all the feedback you receive.

Hey WillR, I think you're being a little harsh, first, Cody is offering to assist/help fellow Warriors with issues they may be having with their PC/laptop, these folk complaining wasn't the issue.

The second and last paragraph of your post, in my opinion is rubbish..and unfair

He is asking Warriors to give feedback, with a free report to follow..I for one, and other fellow Warriors would find such a report helpful.

I am simply trying to help him. Nothing I said was being unfair. You are welcome to live in a fairy land but I much prefer to live in reality (that's where the money is made) and my advice is in line with that.

He is talking about creating a free report based on a whole bunch of feedback. But then he is asking us what to put inside the report. That tells me he hasn't really done a whole bunch of research on it. Coming here and asking us in a thread is not research. All you are going to get is the opinions of a few people. If he wants to create a free report that is successful then he needs to go and find the target market who he expects to download the report, survey them, and let them tell him exactly what they want inside that report.

Sorry, just trying to be helpful. I personally don't think that encouraging ideas I don't think are very good is being helpful. But maybe you disagree.

Many problems with the laptops and also PCs is dust accumulation
inside circuit boards. This is very common cause of computer performance
degredation. Maybe you can elucidate on how to avoid this issues.
Hope to see your report. Thank you.
