How you spot spammers

Hello Everyone,

I have not faced any spammers yet! (Touch wood)

I have noticed many warrior forum stalwarts
do talk about -Avoid promoting spam products, avoid
spammers, beware of spammers.

My questions:
  1. How to I assess/spot spammers?
    (i.e. Their traits, trends/patterns)
  2. What do you do when you spot a spammer?
(i.e. ignore him/her, inform fellow members, blacklist them)
Your experience and suggestions greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Himani

I can usually detect spammers pretty easy on my blog. Their posts tend not to make too much sense, offer no real value, aren't related to the post and of course contain a link to some website. A lot of spam automatically gets filtered away with some WP plug-ins I have.

Spam is every where and in different form, you need to be more specific.

All I do when I see spam is this...

I see them all the time, like here the other day http://www.warriorforum.com/social-m...ook-likes.html but I use an image different from the prior poster

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

I can answer only your second question.

If they're forum spammers here, I click the little red triangle and report their posts.

If they're forum spammers in my own forum (that's very rare because I use admin-activated, not member-activated profiles, and nobody can post until they've exchanged "welcoming emails" with a moderator and specified that they've read the rules and that they suit them), then I send round Luigi and the boys to "explain to them the error of their ways".

On my own sites and blogs, I've disabled "comments" completely, so nobody else can ever post.

If they're email spammers and the unsubscribe button doesn't work (or if there isn't one), then I complain to their hosting company, domain-name registrar, email service provider and internet service provider, or whichever one(s) out of that group I can discover, anyway. And if it continues, I'll forward every email I receive from the person to all of those people's "complaints/abuse departments" with the observation that it's spam and a polite request for them please to try to prevent it in future. It's a real nuisance (initially, but repeating it is quick and easy) but it does often seem to work and I consider it a "public service". I'm very intolerant of email spam.

How do you spot them? Whenever someone promotes a product or his referral link, then chances are high he is a spammer. If he has comments on your blog and has a keyword as his title then he is spammer and if his comment is just like `` thanks will comeback to read your blog ``.

In your blog, if you spot someone is leaving generic comments out of the post's topic they are surely spammers. Email spammers and forum spammers has been discussed by the @Alexa before.

Spammers are everywhere. They are people who insist on trying to sell you something even though you are not interested.

They are people who leave ready-made comments at your blog and have strange user names like ‘clickhere’.

They are people who send you email messages even though you didn't opt in and you don't want to belong to their email list.

Whenever you find a spammer, you should delete their posts, and send their email messages to the spam folder.

You have already learned how to report them in this forum.
