How many domain names do you own?

Hello,

Curosity is in the air, and I'm wondering how many
domain names do you own?

Also, how many domain names are you not using?

Who has the most?

As of now, I own 130 domain names, 60 are not being used.

Im am not sure "exactly" how many I have... I have 89 with lunar pages... 150 with godaddy and a bunch more with 1and1.

200 - 250 would be pretty safe... How many do I use? Probably around 30.

    Thanks,

Weirdly, around 130 too. Strange. When I saw the subject line I thought 'Oh, the 'how many domains?' question again. What does it matter how many domain names you've got if there are many you're not actually using? No-one ever asks how many are unused!' And you did

50 or so unused here, and a few of those that are active aren't exactly being used to their full potential. Will this stop me buying another if I'm hit by a bright idea later? Nope. I justify this by telling myself that all my mates are buying shoes and handbags instead, with no chance of profiting on the investment. Excessive Domain Acquisition will probably be a treatable condition one day, and at least the domains aren't taking up wardrobe space in the meantime

Do you guys own so many domains because you intend to sell them for a profit or do you want to actually use them at some point? Like for landing pages, affiliate marketing, etc. I wonder how many good urls are out there hiding...

It's one of those things where you get a good ideal and get a domain name for it and then you are so busy you never get around to doing anything with it.

I bought a few to turn a profit. If I have a good feeling about them, I'll sit on them until the time is right. Here are some that I think have sell potential: loanguarantee.com, furniturediscounts.com, logoyourcompany.com, etc.

Most of the others I bought to use.

Close to 300 if I had to guess and I plan to buy till I die. They belong to me, all mine and I will never let them go ever never ever ever ever.

LOL, while I have bought way more some I have let evaporate into the nether regions of cyber space others I develop into niche sites.

I have around 170 in one account and about 80 are undeveloped goldmines waiting to be mined for diamonds. (inside joke)

Ever time I get a check from something I forgot about,I buy more education and more domains. I have been 301-ing em as of late for the traffic juice.

My system kinda has my domains paying for themselves, I need to investigate that more that just came to my mind if it's more fact that fiction. I'll post about it later.

My dream is to own at least 10,000 domain names and use 10% of em for something worthwhile.

    Great thread!

Scary part is I couldn't remember and had to go look.

Let 14 expire first of the month which leave me with 43. Can only call 5 'active'. The rest are "on the drawing board" or "seemed like a good idea at the time".

Go forth and do great things.

I have 12 if I counted correctly. All are in use, and have something on them. I just wish it was something more productive

Just remembered I do have 2 .info's which I bought to try something on, but decided to drop the project. Now they will just fade out as a bad memory when the registration expires.

There is an interesting software at http://www.steadyniche.com/ that will throw up quite a good looking site in about 2 minutes for any domain you aren't using. You pick out the keywords, it will select feeds and affiliate programs and you can pick and choose. You can also add your own designed pages.

I was interested in the free trial part which doesn't seem to be offered now. I couldn't get accepted for that (seemed to be a site problem) so never did bother to go as far as checking the price but I expect it is expensive.

    At the time being:

    181 .com, 12 .info, 24 .net, and 13 .org

17 fully developed large to midsized content sites.
    3 Link Directories
    7 NicheForums
    41 "mini sites"
1 squeeze page (disclaimer: results here- NOT TYPICAL! I usually have 8-10 )
    9 single page sales letters
    111 parked pages
    and
    41 unused

Spread out over 2 dedicated servers, 2 VPS', 3 shared hosting accounts and 32 unique class C IP addresses

To whomever asked about the "intentions" of owning this many domains: I have every intention of developing every single one of them, by hand.

I do occasionally sell a site (not very often), but don't plan on letting go of the bulk of my portfolio until retirement (also known as my 25th birthday).

Have you guys seen what people try to sell their sites for? (i.e. brand new sites, no page rank and asking prices of $15,000+) If they get it, I know what business I'm going into! lol

I had just about 100 at the beginning of the year, and then I decided to trim the excess...and now I'm down to about 30 that are actually good sites that are being developed or are already running.

Maybe the Warrior forum should start a Domain Sale Forum, dedicated only to domain sales like WSOs.

I think of great ideas in the night, buy a domain and then don't get anything up on it. LOL

There is another thread about steadyniche but I don't think you can sell the site with the multiple license version and I would basically forget about support because the person advertising never came back. I was really interested in it and even emailed them off the website support/contact. Never got an answer.

Now I'm dwindled down to embarassing numbers to those who are affected by the domain acquisition syndrome like I was once in. Next time you are thinking of purchasing a domain name, think about this:

If I ( you) can't develop it, there is someone else in this huge world of ours that can.

      in the usa:

think locally ( the city you live in)
think locally ( the county you live in)
think locally ( the state you live in)
think locally ( the other states you do not live in)
think globally ( the world we live in)

Then be creative and lease that domain out to someone that can.
I have about 500 domains and at any given time I have on a monthly lease about 375 to different businesses or individuals.

There is no excuse for not earning money on every domain you own. Treat every domain you now own or are thinking of owning as a rental property. Just think of all the millions and millions of niches that a domain can be used for.

Think about the iraqi dinar. How many of you know what that is?
Think about all the college kids going to college in the fall.
Think about the credit card tsumani that is going to hit in the next 3 months. This is going to get ugly.
Think about the health insurance issues in the next 6 months.
Think about the NFL and college football season starting in the next 90 days.
Think about all the laid off auto workers in the next 90 days.

I guess what I am trying to say is.......the opportunities are there.

I have stated on here before that I use blogger blogs to market (auction) my domain names to businesses and individuals. I also use ebay, craigslist, plain emails, sedo, etc, etc.

Here is an easy thing I do every day. Sometimes it is in the morning or anytime during the day. I always always have a pen and paper that I can write down one idea per day for a domain. That gives me a minimum of 365 different domain names that I can create. If i can make $10.00 per month or 100.00 per month per domain..well you can do the math.

      Use you imagination.

      dave

I have about 1600 domain names. Yes, it's costing me a fortune. LOL About half have to do with drumming and music (I'm a professional drummer) and the other half having to do with gifts. Music and Gifts are my main two themes so I've kept them within areas I thought I would get the most use out of. I am using only a third of them currently but plan to have most of them built in some form or fashion within the next 2 years. We have a successful retail business that pays for the domain's annual fee. And we're currently building another business on the side.

I love the domain business but don't do a lot of selling. I just dabble. Don't have the time really. I did sell a domain last year for $3000 but then ended up turning around and just purchasing another one for $4000. I think it's a sickness. LOL

You are correct. I have sold several domains after just sitting on them for a few years. $9 per year is cheap rent to buy and hold.

When a client comes in and wants to get top placement for his keywords (most recent was "muskoka landscaping") we immediately register the domain if available. Then we lease it to the client for free if they use our service. If not we hold, sell or develop the name.

I bought muskokalandscaping.com last weekend and already have a $1500 offer to buy it.

        Is this ethical?

I'd hate to share my ideas with a web development company and then find they have registered a domain name and are then trying to get me to lease it. I would run a mile!

I was thinking the same thing. If you at all believe in the Golden Rule than this is not ethical. I will never walk on other people to get where I'm going. Some areas are gray. This is not. Turn the tables and ask yourself, "Would I like it if someone did this to me?"

It's ethical if I don't take their trade name.

If a client comes in for a consult and decides not to buy why shouldln't I sell the speculated domain to a competitor?

You were talking about leasing them the domain name. Sad.

Well I guess you do need to buy new tyres for that car you are driving, so it's ok to do these kinds of dodgy things then.

For your information, it is possible to make money AND save the whales.

(Note to self - never mention domain name ideas to anyone who looks like your avatar).

Maybe its just me, but you'd probably make a lot more money if you weren't out to F*** clients before the business even starts.

Idk, but if someone did that to me, I'd make sure to yell it off rooftops.

No offense meant, simply a personal opinion.

For everyone that has many domains in use, how do you manage them all?

Email wise, building them in the first place and keeping track of all the orders coming from all over the place.

We have a hard time just looking after 6 or 7 at the moment.

Please share some tips if you can.

We have another 10 or so in development and any management tips would be greatly appreciated.

        Many thanks,

I have a staff that helps me. We pay more attention to the ones that are delivering and keep the others on the back burner until time/money allows. No use in beating a dead horse right? We have many uses for some of the domains that won't have a role until our new business is built. It is not easy maintaining so many domains but definitely worth having them into play until you can see which ones perform. Then you can sell off the excess.

do you have them up already, or just waiting to be put on the servers?

Mines already live, with a blank index page, some are as old as 3 years with no content. I'm waiting for my script to come back with loads of content, so far it's already gathered around 5 million pages on all sorts of niches ready to be spun and populate the sites.

I have about 200 sites or so online and they're feeding my main site. I should have another 100+ online soon. It's been lowkey for two years. I've been building history and PR and will have it all together, plugged in to the big picture by fall if all goes well. I hired a project manager to help me get this thing off the ground. It's a "big" idea. It's difficult for me personally because I already have another full time business I'm managing so he's having to do most of the leg work. But we're getting there, one day at a time.

As flattered as I am that you've taken an interest in what I'm doing, you're effort is on a much larger scale and mine pales in comparison. That said, I'm deeply interested in what you have going so when the times right, shoot me a synopsis on what you're doing and how it all works. I'd appreciate it very much. And the best of luck to you!

Yeah, at first before any programmers, I used to spend about 18 hours a day populating sites, feeding blogs with future set post dates, 100 a day on each blog I owned... bloody tiring I can tell ya... but worth the effort though, cos now it brings in around 8-20k or so in adsense a month

Then I decided to get a programmer onboard and automate the process for personal use... and now after a few years, got another guy, best buddy of mine to work on article blog poster, which has taken over seo website builder pro, since the last programmer let me down

Not sure how long it will be before it's launched though, but the link to the site is in my sig if you want to be on the waiting list.

I can't tell ya how it works, that my friend is a secret

nah, Matt partnered up with someone else who already had a article blog distribution service. That's why they "claim" to have 10,000 blogs - mostly owned by other members.

Mines not ready yet cos it's being built from the ground up (over 800,000 lines of code so far).. and it does a lot more than myarticlenetwork - of which they took a few ideas from my video... luckily enough I didn't mention everything...

We've got 20 dedicated servers ready spread across the globe, with 50,000 ready to use unique IP addresses.

      can't wait til it's finished

I have about 50 I think and about 1/2 were going unused or were just trash sites from the early directory generator days of 2005.

I have since made these sites into autoblogs with wordpress and they are doing great. A few select plugins and these babies can be working on autopilot for months on end. If you have domains laying around, I suggest resurrecting them as autoblogs, then build some links and they will be back in action again making you money.

When you first start out with your website, you might decide to host it on someone else's domain. For example, you might have a blog on blogspot.com or wordpress.com, or you might host your site on geocities.com, a low-cost Web hosting service provided by Yahoo!.
These hosting services are great if you only want to run your site as a hobby, and don't care about attracting a lot of visitors or making money. However, if you really want your site to grow, it needs its own domain name. Here's why:
    • It improves the image of your site. Hosting your site on a common domain name, such as blogspot.com or geocities.com, makes your site look -- how to put it nicely? -- low-budget. People are less likely to trust your site, and you'll certainly have a hard time selling them anything. A site hosted on its own domain name looks more professional.
    • It makes your site more portable. If your site's hosted on someone else's domain, you can't easily move to another hosting company. For example, if you want to move your site off geocities.com, you're going to lose all the inbound links to your site. (It's the same problem as having a 'myname@my-isp.com' email address; if you move ISPs, you lose your email address.) If you have your own domain, however, then you can move your site between different hosting companies while keeping the same domain name and URLs for the site.

20 domain names. All have content on them, but only about 10 that are updated regularly and can be defined as "in use". At one point I was going to diversify all over the place, but found that it is much easier (for me) to build a few really good sites and make decent money on each one than to build dozens of mediocre sites and make a little bit of money on each one.

The other 20 are in the im work at home niche and range from feeder sites , revue sites , splash pages , membership sites, all linked together and pointing to a money site that I have not 100% finished as of yet .

Oh yeah , I lease a traffic exchange and a safelist also as well as have a site dedicated to my affiliate program

I am not sure I get the unethical part of what I do.

Someone wants to be at the top of google. I buy some domains on spec based on their keywords. Then I pitch them on working with me. If they choose to, they get to use the domains, if not I sell them or use them myself.

Some clients ask me to transfer the domains to them which I will happily do.

They have the choice to register theses domains on their own. It's not a hostage situation.

I personally own about 30 domains. Five of them are being hosted by Liquidweb, and the rest is hosed by Bluehost.

I actually plan to get rid of a lot of my domains by selling them off as I only have enough time to develop only a few domains.

Waaaay to many domains, active and inactive to account for. However, i'm embarking on an information explosion in the near future that will populate some of these domains with some good content for at least an adsense income.

I have 19 names. But 7 of those are expiring in June or July, so I won't have them for much longer. Only 5 active sites right now since I've had a pretty busy work load, and I've had to sell off a few of my money makers.

I must have 100 or more and only using a few right now. Letting some of them go as I change what I focus on.

I've got a plan in the works to park them better so they make some money till I use them for real, or build and flip sites with them.

Trouble is, I get good ideas, but I just don't follow through with developing them. I'm sure not the only one.

Around 100 split between those in use - about 20. Those parked for future projects (so no one else can reg them - about 20) and short brandable .coms 4+5 letters - about 20) and some rubbish than I am going to drop.

I know the feeling. I have about 100 and I keep saying the same thing about half of them... one day....

But then again, I had 2 domains that I really liked about 2 years ago and didn't use them so I let them go. Last month, I finally came up with a product for that name - something pretty uncommon - and went back to get them and they were gone.

So, I'm keeping what I have. One day...

I'm at about 100 or so. I had a lot of unused domains for a long time, but when the msn loophole came out, I rededicated a lot of them to autoblogs. Now, I think I've only got a couple that don't have anything on them.

I'm also at about 50 Squidoo lenses that don't have domains attached.

'How do you lease a domain name"

I will put this in as simple terms as possible:

    1...find a niche or business......example....plumber
    2...purchase a domain name.... example...bestplumberjacksonville
    3...create a simple blog...........blogspot.com
4...market this domain name to all the plumbers in jacksonville via your blog.
5...offer to lease the domain name to them for a fee per month, or sell it to them
for a one time fee. If they lease it just redirect the domain to their current
    website.
6...If they do not have a website offer to build them one with this domain name or
a domain name of their choosing.
7...Charge them another monthly fee to do SEO, hosting, etc.
8...Offer to do a monthly email campaign, for a monthly fee of course.
9...Do one of the above or all of the above.
10..If you do not know how to do some of the above, find someone who does and
farm the work out to them.
11..This can be used in every city in america, for thousands of companies/niches.

This is not original, I just read the forum here and try to do my own thing. It is not easy, it takes alot of work. I am still not doing IM full-time, but will be soon.

You can start this business for less than $10.00, the cost of a domain name.

    good luck.

      Dave-
Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your detailed response. One more question though if you don't mind. Based your example, what would you charge (average) to lease the site/domain name? And how do you market this service?

      Thanks-

Well that all depends. On a pure monthly lease I have some as low as $25.00 per month ( my minimum) and some as high as $500.00 per month. It all depends on if the domain name is business name specific or more generic. If it is more generic, I usually will price it for sale so high that the company will probably not purchase it, then I can lease it to them for a longer period of time. Then again it also depends on the companies situation: did I create the website for them, do I do anything monthly for the company, seo, email campaign, etc.

I am working on a couple of domain names now that I hope will be generic enough to
market to all colleges in the usa, and one that will be marketable to a specific group of people that are losing their jobs every day.

Think about different things that are happening today that will still be affecting peoples lives or businesses for the years to come, examples: energy, food, jobs, health insurance, taxes, scams, Barack Obama-that one should be good for the next 4-8 years, bankruptcy, foreclosures, swine flu- this one will be back in a few months and the affects could be long lasting, etc.

I have a few other ideas that If they work out I will share them here in the future.

        Hope that helps.

I have 38 registered names. Oh, then there are 6 more at another registrar!

I actively keep 8 of them going, have some content on a few more, and keep thinking I will stop buying them.

I AM finally getting it that I need to focus more.

    I currently own 22 domains.

Most are hosted domains but a few are lying fallow.

3 personal domains; 5 are redirected; 5 are customer domains; 6 are affiliate domains (or will be); and three are undeveloped.
