Solution Mining > Using PC Power To Make Money (Similar to currency mining)

Recently I have been reading a lot online about crypto currencies such as bitcoin, litecoin etc.

For those that dont know what bitcoin is there is a link in my sig to their site.

Essentially the way the currency or the "bits" are created and added to the market is that they are mined for by cryptography mining computers. Basically people build expensive machines which either pool together or individually scan values and basically crack code in order to find blocks of bit coin > Protocol of Bitcoin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An idea came to me when pondering on all of this recently.

What other things can computers do other than mining which will return some type of value to the owner?

This question certainly raises some ideas which I hope we will explore.

One idea I had might be for organizations (private, government..) to add a monetary or other value to working on other types of solutions.

For example computer processing power can also be used to:

solves crimes by facial recognition, predict crime, build real time interactive maps.

artificial intelligence requires vast amounts of processing power and memory, we know that all the big nations are literally sprinting towards it, could regular pc power be used?

gaming again requires huge amounts of power, memory, bandwidth...

medicine the search for cures for cancers and things need to be calculated by checking things like proteins and enzymes up against one another...

I think you see where I am going with this and none of it is actually new.

People have been dedicating or donating their computers to all sorts of causes for a long time. Skype is well known for using users PC Is Skype Slowing Down Your Internet? - Tips4pc

Stanford made news headlines a while back when asking people around the world to help solve cancer by donating their computer power to help cure cancer Folding@home

What is new in my thinking anyway and as far as I know it would be to add a monetary value to the tasks the computers are running. For me anyway this would be a fantastic way to add an incentive for people to invest their internet, energy and cpu's to all sorts of causes in order to find a solution.

The Stanford example is perfect. He we are faced with something that pretty much effects every family on the planet in some way shape or form. Yet there are only 274K computers donating to the cause. Adding a monetary value will undoubtedly increase the power... currently some miners are literally spending tens of thousands of dollars on mining rigs.

I call it solution mining
