Why are 3D printer files so expensive?

I thought 3D printers where supposed to revolutionize purchases?

Seems to me based off the pricing I have seen not much has changed.

      You know... make it faster and cheaper to buy things that can be printed as opposed to paying for a part and then waiting a week to receive you buy a file from someone at what is supposed to be a cheaper cost, then print the part out yourself...

        This would mean a whole new avenue for piracy. Most information that comes in digital format can be pirated. I can't see this technology ever being offered cheaply.

    Maybe it's time for a 3d modelling course and beat them at their own game

    On that note I have my 3d printer coming this week and cannot wait to try it. What files are you looking for as makerbot has loads of open source projects and freebies.

    I don't think the technology is being used widely enough yet for
    anything about it to be cheap. Give it time... let the eary adapters
    work through the bugs for the rest of us. Eventually it will become
    inexpensive.
