Question on an affiliate program

I am planning to promote an online game. I know a lot about it but never played it. Since I am going to promote it I want to play it. Would it be ok to join it through my own affiliate link?

Thanks
Scott

I'm sure it's against the TOS of the affiliate network - as would be purchasing with your affiliate link to save money. I know tons of people who do it, but it's still probably against the TOS.

This game is not through any network. I shimmed the tos. I will look at them better.

If the game isn't through the network what advantage would you be getting by joining through your affiliate link then?

Just wondering where the upside is.

It is not on commission junction or any of those. The company that owns and runs the game has an in house affiliate program. The game has been around for 10yrs. I get 50% so if I join the game through my own link I would pay full price and get the other back.

It could get you to lose the commission if it's against the rules. Just ask a friend to sign up and do it through his if that's the case. Or better email them and ask them.
I actually don't see anything wrong with it and when I have had sites with affiliates I could of cared less if they bought from there link, that is commission money and I still received my profit from it.

Thanks I will look at TOS better. I don't see what a big deal it would be especially if I was bringing them more business.

If the advertiser allow then you can go for it. Otherwise It will violate their terms.

It's better that you should have a landing page rather than a direct link. Landing pages are going to be a safe route for your own strategy, it can be a blog, website or just a single HTML page.

As the others have said, just look at the ToS. In fact, if you plan to promote them in the long term, it may not be a bad idea to contact them and explicitly speak to them about it. With some luck, you could end up getting a free copy also, or they may want you to pay in full - but whatever happens, the real point is that it will be with the knowledge of your account manager and that is the most critical part of it.

I would say it's not a good idea. People do it all the time, but it is either a TOS problem or just generally a bad thing to do in the minds of most people, especially IMers.
