Working hard but not going well

Hey Warriors,

I have been using WF for many months now reading everything to help promote my website business. I realized that the best way to get money would be to approach businesses that I find that don't have websites, and try to sell them on the idea. The problem I am facing is convincing business owners that they need my services. Let me backdrop with saying that I am in desperate need. I am so broke I can't buy another WSO. My debit card is -35.00, my paypal account is owing 150 on the paypal 300 max credit, and my student loans from graduating college, whoo hoo, are going to need payment back starting November 11, boo hoo. I live at home, and so I work, or try to anyway. I spend about 20 hours a week trying to make this work.(with the rest of my time looking for a job job, because I need something. I can't sell my body parts so please don't suggest that) I have fine tuned a really good template in wordpress for barber shops in my area. I will provide the template with 4 pages(Home, About Us, Services, and Contact Us) with a mobile site(1 home page with information, click to call, google maps, and visit main site link) A custom Logo, that I do myself and not go to Fiverr or some other imitation site.(I never trust Fiverr because if the logo proves fraudulent ever, then my customer...well doesn't deserve that. I am WhiteHat to a fault, which is both good and annoying.)

So what I have done is make an awesome flyer with the template, the mobile template, and everything I will do for them for just $300. I think the price is more than far with the value they receive. (If they need me to purchase the site and host it I can do that for just $30 a month, but it has never gone far enough for me to tell them that) I am just looking to make some money since I need it really bad,(Verizon bill is due, Man Verizon is expensive, but I still have their unlimited internet plan, I can't let that go) and can't even make something. I walk in to the Barbershops, which took me a long time as I don't like confrontation at all. And even though I was terrified I asked, "Do y'all(We live in the South) have a website?" I already suspected they didn't because I looked it up on Google, but best to make sure. When they say no, I then say well I make websites for Barber shops, I give them my flyer, there eyes pop, but they are always working on someone's hair. Not a single one of them had an empty chair so they put it down and say they will call me or email me, and not a single one does. Help me warriors please. I am not looking for easy money, as I put in hard work. I have Bachelor's Degree from the University of South Carolina focused in IT and web design, and have years of IT related experience as I went back to school rather than just completing it from high school.(I graduated high school in '04, so I am still pretty young, but still) I just don't know what else to do. I still want to sell my service as I know I am good at it, as a landscaper knows they are good at landscaping, but I am not good at sales. It's not like some Warriors believe that you just walk into the business and you walk out with a sale, easy as pie. I did not have that experience at all. I don't know what to do.

Being an entrepreneur is tough. As you are hustling and trying to start a business, it can be difficult. Have been in similar experiences. Can you lean on your parents for financial assistance?

You may be able to defer your student loans if you apply for Financial Hardship. You can postpone your payments if you are struggling to pay them. Explain your situation to them and see if you can get a deferment.

If you don't have help from your family, it might be best to devote all of your time to finding a full time job. After you secure a job, you could work on your side projects part time.

If you can get help from your family, and have them pay some of your bills, then devote all of your time to starting a business.

Can't intelligently comment on pricing of your services, but if you stay aggressive, keep knocking on doors, good things will come.

Also, try to work with your local SCORE office. The Small Business Association has free retired executives that can counsel you on how to start a business. They might have somebody with expertise in your field. Check your local office for help, and see if they can help you.

My parents, God bless them, are amazing people. But the are not wealthy. I think you may be right, that I need to get a some steady employment first, and then try and make my own money elsewhere. I was really hoping though that since I have the degree, and I have the knowledge base(Wordpress, HTML, CSS, and Photoshop) That I could really just strike... well I would take copper right now, instead of Gold lol.

Why would you need to buy another WSO? It sounds like you already know of one method that has been proven to make people money. Did you pay for a WSO to learn that method? Could you learn more through additional reading here on the forums? I always advocate utilizing a mentor, but hey, if your funds are tight (which I certainly understand and can relate to), there is priceless info here on WF free for the taking.

It sounds to me like you are venturing into an internet marketing method that is not "fit" for you. There are plenty of ways to build relationship with others through IM (and make money doing it, so I'm told), other than offline, which requires face to face selling as you're trying to do. Even if you printed flyers directing people to a website with videos you make describing your service, you could let the site do the selling instead of having to talk to people f2f, if that makes your knees knock, which it sounds like it does.

I'm speaking from experience here. My first WSO I purchased and really tried to implement was one that involved doing promotions for offline businesses. But when it came down to it, I still had to sell them over the phone. Well, guess what? That is not my strength. At all. I'm a much better writer than speaker. So since that fiasco, I've started focusing on affiliate marketing to make money online. Get a website, and a domain name - drive traffic to an offer on Clickbank (or make your own pdf - free if you have Adobe or one of many other pdf-making programs out there) - drive traffic to the squeeze page (free) - get them to opt in to your Aweber list ($19 a month...first month is $1) - email them regularly, selling affiliate products along the way (no additional cost). There...no additional WDOs needed for you at the moment!

  • I am thinking out the box now ?? Could you not build the site for said barber shop showing them how great it's going to look then take that along to them rather than use a flyer.
Just looked at gent's barber's in my local town abingdon uk and found that only 2 show up and they are only showing up from online telphone directory out of the two only one has a web page of sort's google+ page. oxford is the closest large town and that has got a paid ad and web page for a barber's but it is a very old shop. So looking at that why are local shop's not having there own site i think it could be down to cost and the fact that they just don't think they need one.

From the places I went to that last line captures it. They just don't think they need one. But I was able to get in a good Skype call with, Joe Crosbie View Profile: Joe Crosbie He was seriously motivating and gave some really good ideas.

All good ideas. I think I will try and pick up a part-time job, set up my elance and freelance profiles, and then just keep on keeping on. Lots of great advice, so thank you.

That's a great degree to have! Hopefully you can use it online. Web design is something that I'm not very good at myself.

Buying WSOs can get very addictive. I know you want to learn more, but you might want to assess what you have now. It just depends on the direction you want to go in.

I would actually recommend creating your own WSO and making an ebook on designing. And then offer your services at the end. Once people see what you can do, they will pay you for your services. The WSO will build trust. Get a few testimonials. It should work. Just don't let that degree go. You worked hard for it. Good luck!

Get a job. Secure yourself first.. that should be your priority right now. I did that mistake of quitting my job too early when my business wasn't earning anything and man that hurts. More than that your confidence will take a blow. And with that money just start to invest yourself. Read as much as you can. Also try to get a mentor. Helped me a lot!

  • I can see your predicament and can see you are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Have you considered freelancing your web development skills? There are a number of platforms such as Freelancer, Elancer etc which may not pay well, but could provide some immediate cash to give you a little breathing space.

First things first ... you need to take a step back from what you're doing and find immediate employment to resolve your income situation. Stop buying WSO's, and stop burning fuel going door to door until you have the time to evaluate your business model with the clarity that comes with having income stability.

I know this isn't the answer you want to hear, but you need to let math make your decisions for a little while instead of emotion. You have to have some operating capital to be in business for yourself, and even if you got a $300 sale today it won't solve any of your problems, it just pushes them another week down the road.

If you can't find a job in your field, call every Pizza shop in town and ask if they need any part time delivery drivers. Swallow your pride and take whatever you can find, because having an income right now is more important than anything else. Even if it's "not enough", it's better than the $0 you will make tomorrow if you don't do this. You can't make good decisions when you're cash-strapped, it's just not possible.

So fix that first, then look to evaluate your business model because it sounds like you haven't thought this through. How many barber shops are in your area ... a dozen? One hundred? Even if you were to make all of them your customer - which you won't - you can't sustain yourself at the price you're charging. You didn't think about that because right now you're distracted by a diminishing bank account balance, and if that hadn't been an issue you probably would have.

Nothing anyone here tells you on improving your sales tactics, finding "profitable niches", etc. will help you today. Fix your income situation first by closing this browser and putting all of this on hold until you've found a job.
