Suggestions on getting mobile app downloads

INTERNET MARKETING

Mobile advertising can be pricey and there's several stores now out there besides Google Play and Apple iTunes that all provide some type of free traffic, but I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on getting a lot of free or low cost downloads for an app using other methods?

  It's a free social app, but we're looking for ways to accelerate downloads. Many apps out there have millions of downloads, and I can't imagine they paid $1 or more for every download that a lot of companies are charging... especially for targeting the U.S.
