Meme's and funny pics

Hi all

I was looking through some humor sites today and realized that most of them have thousands and thousands of meme's and funny pics from people.

My question is ... don't you need to buy these photos ? like you would normally do when adding photos to a website.

This question also applies for youtube videos being used over and over again by different users.

Not sure ... I suspect that many webmasters of such sites are "taking a chance on it" and living dangerously, and that allowing people to submit photos of which they may not own the copyrights isn't exactly a recipe for long-term success, and that that may be why so many of those sites come and go, when their hosting companies comply with the DMCA site take-down notices served on them.

I'm waiting for the litigation over Pinterest, too: there must be some, eventually, surely?

This can be a little different. I think it depends exactly how they're "used"? Isn't embedding them different from copying them?

I'm not a lawyer - can you tell?
