by grandstar 3 replies
Hi Guys,
I would like to have an idea of the traffic each Alexa Rank can pull in.

What is the expected traffic on

1. Alexa rank of 12,000,000
2. Alexa Rank of 11,000,000
3. Alexa Rank of 10,000,000
4. Alexa Rank of 9,000,000
5. Alexa Rank of 8,000,000
6. Alexa Rank of 7,000,000
7. Alexa Rank of 6,000,000
8. Alexa Rank of 5,000,000
9. Alexa Rank of 4,000,000
10. Alexa Rank of 3,000,000
11. Alexa Rank of 2,000,000
12. Alexa Rank of 1,000,000
13. Alexa Rank of 500,000
15. Alexa Rank of 100,000
Alexa Rank of 25,000
14. Alexa Rank of 100,000

Also what does

1. Alexa Popularity Rank
2. Alexa Reach Rank

    Grand Star,

I don't think there's any way you're going to get a reliable answer for your question. You may get some guesses, but that's all you'll get and I doubt they will be of any real use.

Not only do many people talk about how unreliable the Alexa results are, but they are not based on quality traffic. We all know that visits to a web site vary in many important ways. How are you going to sort through some "guestimate" of traffic rank to come up with a statistic that means anything?

Many of your questions have no realistic answer, in my opinion. The reason is that the only traffic Alexa rankings can measure are based on the number of visitors to each who have the Alexa toolbar installed and running in their browsers at the time of their visits. They can't measure any other traffic. The only way to monitor traffic is through a site's server logs.

The last time I looked at my "Alexa rankings", I checked out two of my sites. One, which is a private blog only really for my rather widespread family and gets almost no traffic at all, had a really low "Alexa ranking" and apparently "gets enormous traffic" (but not according to my server logs!), and the other, which genuinely gets so much traffic, in floods, that I have to have special hosting for it, is apparently nowhere to be seen. It really is as unreliable as that. But when you look at what it's actually measuring, that's not a great surprise.

Trying to estimate a site's traffic from its Alexa ranking just isn't meaningful or worthwhile.

These things are of possible, slight, debatable relevance if you're (i) selling a website to someone who for some reason "believes in it", or (ii) selling advertising space on a website to someone who for some reason believes in it. For anyone else, and any other purposes, I think it's more or less a total waste of time, signifying nothing.
