A course I'm taking on list building keeps emphasizing that I should pick a niche that I am passionate about. My passion has always been music, I have grown up listening to different genres and playing multiple instruments.

I wanted to get the Warrior Forum's opinion on a list building idea. Do you think it would work if I created a squeeze page that advertised the most up to date reviews of the most current hip hop songs sent to your email if you sign up. I wouldn't be selling a product at the start but hopefully I could get a big enough list that I could monetize someway.

I appreciate anyones input.

I'm not sure that would be such an attractive incentive since reviews will surely already exist on online stores where the music can be purchased?

I'd think about 2 things initially. Offering a better incentive and offering a paid for product (or service) since you need to tap into a list whilst prospects are warm rather than building a list and hitting subs with a paid product at a significantly later date.

Maybe your starting point should be to find out if anyone is particularly interested in your reviews and will they pay for them?

What value will such reviews bring?

Get some answers but certainly stick with what you are good at. That's one of the things that makes you, you!

      All the best

I would of thought that if I picked a specific genre, such as hip hop for this example, people would enjoy having the latest songs and album reviews delivered right to their email. Then once I have a big enough list I could monetize it by putting ads in the email or affiliate marketing with hip hop equipment or albums that people wanted to sell. Is a paid for product (or service) necessary or can I make money off a list by the ways I stated?

It might be sacrilege to talk against an email list, but if you're going to concentrate on the hip hop genre, consider whether starting a Facebook fan page or developing a mobile app might not be a better way of building a targeted group of followers.

How much would you lose if you tried what you are suggesting here??

How much credence would you give to reviews by a total stranger? Why would your opinions be valuable enough that someone would give up their email address to get them?

If you're the entertainment editor of an industry magazine, like Rolling Stone, maybe. If you had publishing credits in the same, maybe.

If you're some random stranger with a squeeze page? Not a chance, unless there is something so different about you that a certain number of people would give you a try out of curiosity.

If you grow the list big enough and have the performance metrics to back up selling ads, you might make some money. But don't count on getting crazy rich from email ads.

What I think you should focus on is all those who LOVE music and desperately want to learn how to play an instrument or sing or create their own beats, etc... You need to go where the money is in your niche... Sure, be interested in the niche you choose but you have to focus on the segment of that niche that is proven to buy stuff online.
