The BIGGEST Thing In Internet Marketing That Almost No One Is Talking About

What is it?

3D Printing.

In my opinion as well as others 3D printing is set to revolutionize the way we do stuff for ever.

In a matter of years every home and office will own a 3D printer.

3D printing will offer consumers the ability to print solid object from simple reels of plastic.

Currently the technology is still in the early stages in regard to consumers with many people still unsure what 3D printing is and how it can and will benefit them.

Click Here for a list of the best 3D printers.

3D printers can currently print almost anything. The problem is that manufacturers and retailers have been slow to take the technology up. Click Here for a list of examples of what 3D printers can print.

IMHO I believe that what is required for 3D printing to really take off is three fold.

One - the technology needs to get better to the point where we can use smaller printers to print in many different colours, faster, cheaper and with less energy. Currently most 3D printers are expensive, bulky and are only printing with one print head at a time, this mean only one colour per print (object). They are already working on this with newer better models coming out it seems every few months, like this one.

Two - Retailers and manufacturers need to jump on board so that there is a real reason for people to want to buy and use a 3D printer. Currently consumers don't really have a reason to buy a 3D printer with most users only downloading trivial type files with designs such as kitty toys, hex bit holders and toy sausages from sites like thingiverse.

Only when retailers and manufacturers begin working together and creating then offering designs via paid for downloadable files on their websites will 3D printing expand into regular consumer consciousness.

Thirdly - the consumer technology needs to expand outside of simple plastics and begin offering metal based printing which can then be used to print jewellery, tools and computer components, proteins and complex carbohydrates which can be used to print foods and medicines and finally minerals which can be used to print things such as glass ware, dishes and supplements.

Here is one example of where designers and manufacturers are thinking outside of the box when it comes to 3D printing.

I think that as Internet Marketers we need to begin discussing this topic more.

3D printing is going to revolutionize and change everything and the opportunity that we as IMers have is that 3D printing relies on the web.

"Success can be defined as when preparation meets opportunity".

I think that everyone in marketing period is thinking about 3d printing. ANd yes. It is going to be bad fn when it really hits the house. It is getting cheap now and almost to the point to where everyone will be able to afford it. Those who get on the train now will be able to CRUSH it .

    Good post.

Wow, that's pretty amazing. I looked at some of the examples of what 3D printing can do and I am astonished. The working gun, the light shoe, the ceramic coffee mugs, the fabrics......wow, it made my head spin.

I can barely wait until they come up with the "Weird Science" version. lol

Aw come on! You just had to let everyone know... hahah

Wait till Amazon starts picking up on 3d printing... And watch the conversion rates go as wild as information products.

Meanwhile, pick up a course on 3d modelling software like Maya.

Jeez, they already do? It's coming much faster than I projected! I have a huge list of biz ideas as well.

Can you imagine printing furniture from IKEA? You'd need to assemble them as well. hahaha

But what I'm worried about is the price line - With supply skyrocketing, prices are projected to plunge in an instant with price wars.

I'd assume that high price buyers would be taking attention to details - almost that of intricate sculptors in the Greek era, only now in cyberspace. Or maybe innovative inventions or engineering feats.

Innovation will spiral out of control... so will the copycats.

Pretty exciting for a digital artist who specializes in 3D scenes and objects, like me. I also use a 3D sculpting tool - "Silo 3D" (besides my photo-realistic 3D scene making software - "Vue Infinite").

    The fun never stops!

Been getting emails from Motley Fool about 3d Printing for a while now. I don't buy anything from them I just study their email marketing. I think the gist was you buy a membership from them and they tell you what hot 3D printing company to buy into or something like that.

But yeah, it's a pretty amazing technology that you could make some money in, just like any other amazing new technology I guess.

You either will or you won't make money in this niche, depending on your individual success. But going after markets that are "hot" doesn't hurt.

It's exciting because this is going to generate demand - and with demand comes opportunities for monetization.

Think about the things you can sell as physical products - no shipping fees... Just printing fees.

      Instant "downloads".

Heck, the shipping industry might see a huge decline in stuff. It's almost like teleportation of inorganic matter.

I guess ill be staying indoors from now on and keep a hefty supply of tin foil ready...

No but seriously every time a new technology appears there are always the doom and gloomers. Things get regulated, some things dont, most people are good people but scum bags always exist... no big deal, lets just deal with it and make some money.

Think of business prior to the Internet. Well it's like that. People will say in ten years "think of online retail without printing?".

I mean just think about all of the possibilities. Commerce sites like eBay will spring up (and already have) for file downloads where people can sell their files to consumers who want to print those goods, or what abour designers making money from designing 3D models for sale, think of all the hardware sales, review websites, services etc...

It is phenomenal once you really think about it.

I thought that 3D printing was still kind of in the experimental phase and it was just now being adopted by several industries. I had no idea it was available to consumers! But I think it will be a while until the prices start to really drop.

The opportunity with 3D printing is not in selling the models. The advantage and value it provides has to do with small scale MANUFACTURING.

For example, let's say you have an invention and you need a prototype. You could spend many thousands of dollars having molds built... or you 3D print them for pennies.

But... let's say your first (or 30th) prototype doesn't work and must be changed. You would then need MORE multi-thousand dollar molds! However, with 3D printing, it's just a matter of changing the 3D model (which can often be done in minutes) and printing another one. It's FAST and CHEAP.

Do you see the HUGE advantage, yet?

It's only AFTER you need a VERY LARGE number of parts that building molds becomes a cost-effective option.

    But let me continue...

In another scenario, you may want to manufacture an initial batch of a product to do test marketing. In yet another example, let's say you're selling an expensive, but low volume product.

Once again, in these situations, producing molds would be very expensive compared to 3D printing them (again, especially in small numbers).

3D printing helps level the playing field for small (or even one-person) companies that want to design AND MANUFACTURE parts or products. One person can now compete with a larger corporation. The initial investment and manufacturing time is greatly reduced.

In fact, a lot of the 3D printers being sold are manufactured from 3D printed parts. In other words, the printers are making themselves. (Hello Skynet!)

    3D printing isn't a "fad." And it's not a gimmick. It's a full-on revolution.

      Good post, exactly!

Adding other ideas; supplying parts for things now is even easier. Not only could you setup your own parts online store now where you print parts for machines, appliances and tools then sell them but also assuming your clients own 3D printers, you just sell them the file types.

I actually dont see 3D printing getting that big for many reasons. Sure its a cool idea and seems awesome but there are several problems with it.

    The first is that you can only print basic things. What I mean is that you can only print a single solid object. Look at a pen for example. Forgetting the ink and just think about the pen. Its made up of several different types of materiel. Plastic for the body, a metal spring, a foam grip. You cant 3D print a pen because 3D printing only gives you one materiel type. In fact look at just about anything. How many things on your desk right now are made of just plastic? Likely very few things. Also how many things on your desk are made of just one part? Are you going to 3D print them and then put them together by hand? No that's silly it would take you longer to do that than it would to just by a new {insert small thing made of just plastic here}

Then there is cost. It would cost more in power, plastic, and wear on the machine to print a small plastic object then it would to just buy it as a mass produced product.

There are other reasons 3D printing wont get big. These are just some off the top of my head. Honestly 3D printing is a gimmick. It seems really cool but in truth its not very useful at all.

^ Well, that might be the case "for now".

3D printing is currently used in a lot of things: chocolate printing, construction of buildings, organ stem cell regeneration, even fabrics, etc.

If technology improves, we might be able to place customized elements side by side to recreate objects. As for sophistication, I'd have to agree... 3d printing is still very immature.

To be clear, consumer level 3D printers may be immature, but the commercial stereo lithography machines have been around for many years and are extremely sophisticated. They use lasers to precisely cure layers of resin.

The exciting part is that 3D printing technology is now available to consumers, inventors, small manufacturers, and hobbyists.

Well yes for a inventor or a manufacturer a 3D printer makes sense to make one offs and prototypes etc. However as far as being 'on every desk in every home and office' I super highly doubt that.

    Well written article, many thanks.
The market is young yet let it settle down before you invest in machines.
I remember Theodore H. Maiman many years ago who first ibvented the laser. The first one was a ruby laser and on showing it to scientist colleagues in a darkened room, they said " Very pretty Theo, but what could you use it for?"
Now all these years on we have lasers in music players and all sorts of devices, it's up to the imagination. NASA took a measurement from the Earth to the moon to see how far it was, they got an accurate measurement for the very first time.

Let's just see what this technology does for the next generation.
