Having your hosting and domain with separate companies is much more secure. You can go with any hosting plan that HostGator offers, and get a domain pretty cheap from GoDaddy or Namecheap.

  EIG has really messed things up by entering the field (and swallowing 50+ hitherto well-functioning web hosts in the process).

I agree. GoDaddy tries to sell you all sorts of things you don't need. Just get your domains there as they are some of the cheapest. Hostgator is a cheap and reliable webhoster. I've never had any problems with them.

Godaddy is good for domain only, I have read very bad reviews about its hosting. Hostgator has a plan for same price but allows one domain. I would recommend bluehost, with coupons you can save a lot.

As for registering domains I don't think you can beat namecheap. A few years ago I had a domain with Godaddy which they blocked because of spamming, even though the headers showed that the mail was originating in Romania, admin at mysite had been used as a return address, even though it did not exist. I ended up having to abandon my site, so I wouldn't recommend go daddy to anyone.

I stay away from Godaddy completely accept for their cheap .info sales

Last time I had to cancel with Godaddy I had to call them myself so they could try to talk me out of it. I use these guys and have done a review. Website Hosting I Recommend Just about any hosting will give you multiple domains and multiple sites

I use namecheap for both my domain & my hosting & I have never had any problems. It was easy to set up & the cost was minimal. I was skeptical at first about hosting my site at namecheap but I am happy that I did. I highly recommend them my friend.

Godaddy is best for domain registration as well as renewals also because other compnies charge high at time of renewal of domain so stick with Godaddy for domain.

For I would like to recommend you Bluehost or Hostgator they both are best and search on Google you can easily found good discount for 2 yr or more purchase of hosting. I am with bluehost and as per my knowledge you can get 2 year unlimited hosting with unlimited domain in $96 only and that's great deal

I have, and have had, a few hosts. I've had mixed results with a number of them. GoDaddy was my least favorite.

HostGator is owned by EIG (HostGator was sold to them last year), which owns a LOT of other hosting companies. See Endurance International Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for a list.

With the exception of a major issue in the beginning, I've been more happy with LunarPages overall.

I have domains registered with various registrars and they all seem to have there good and bad points.

Godaddy bad point is that if you do not renew in time, they will sting you to get it back even through it has not dropped. Others won't charge anything.
However Godaddy send you loads of reminders that the domain is coming up for renewal so you should not accidentally miss it, and you can always set to automatic renew. Again they send you loads of emails, so if you change your mind you can put back to manual and let it drop.
Conclusion Godaddy is certainly a good choice if you are starting out.

Used plenty of hosts as well. Hostgator been through the change of ownership and I have seen plenty of people not being happy with the service anymore. My own experience is that there has been a couple of hick-ups but its seems fine now and all my domains have been moved to there new servers very smoothly. Downtime better that most others.

Other one that I like is D9hosting. Based here in the UK and has servers in the US as well. Much smaller company and will help you more hosting and sort out YOUR problems as part of the regular service, at no extra charge.
Support not maned all the time, so you may take that as a negative but you often get the owners themselves when you need help.

I would always go the multi hosting route as you soon collect lots of sites, or is that just me?

For domain registry, you can usually get a domain name with any hosting packages. For hosting my sites are hosted on DreamHost (which does provide 2 free domain names with every order [one .com one .co]). It's $9.95 per month but if you use coupons it's $3.40 a month with unlimited sites, bandwidth, etc. The coupon code is SAVE75DEAL and there are others (I wrote a blog post with hosting website deals a few weeks ago, and you can check it out on my website).

Most of what I was going to say has already been said. I'll just add that a number of Web hosts offer unlimited domains with shared hosting. Hostgator's Baby Plan is one example, but it's a pretty standard feature.

I jumped ship from godaddy when they were on board with SOPA and I stand by that on principle. Hostgator sells domains and hosting but since the EIG aquisition they seem to have some speed issues and I think I might be moving if it stays at current levels plus 9.95 for whoisguard, which is a bit ridiculous for a simple script entry.. But of all the places that I have registered domains I like namecheap. they give you free whoisguard which can save you a bit of money depending on where you go plus always look for the coupon to save a few dollars

EIG is a huge conglomeration now they have bought up something like 50+ hosting companies in the past couple of years. I know hostgator is under them and bluehost as well. here is that wiki Endurance International Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia if you care of course. I care a little for IP diversity and footprint reduction and there is of course the hopeful thought of some sort of guarantee or median level of quality with that large of a corporation.

Now that being said I stay away from godaddy on principal so if that is something you agree with cool if not look for the $1 domain coupon from godaddy and take advantage. I resell hosting and domains and I know how much I pay wholesale on a domain so stick it to them on the $1 per year.

As for separate domain register and hosting I somewhat agree. Most registrars are resellers of another registrar as its a pretty pricy thing to be able to register domains so I am and have been fine with doing both at once at one point. Today I keep my domains all in one place (namecheap as I cannot sell myself domains per TOS) and do hosting at several other hosting companies including a few at my own reseller account; to reduce footprint, increase IP diversity, and keep niches separate and organized a little bit.

I don't usually generalize but I have to say this: Any web host owned by EIG is a strict no-no. Every host they've acquired has declined in service. BlueHost seems to be holding up its end somewhat, but it's also started receiving more negative reviews than positive.

Look at your own website's needs, and go for web hosts that specialise in offering that kind of service is my advice. Specialized web hosts always offer better service at fair prices. You might want to explore that end.

I find buying domains on Godaddy and hosting on Hostgator works quite well.
I use the BabyPlan on Hostgator which allows you unlimited domains.
You just need to point your Godaddy domain nameservers to Hostgator, but it's easily done with one or two clicks.
