I know (for Google and MSN) you are only meant to put around 20-30 keywords per adgroup, to make the ad super targeted and drop the poor performing keywords etc.

But what do I do with the keywords that are:

a. getting barely any impressions (drop them?)
b. getting loads of impressions but very little clicks, if any (drop them?)

Obviously I'm going to drop keywords that are sending loads of clicks but no conversions and place them in a more targeted adgroup.

Also this same question applies to the Content network, i.e.:

a. should I block referrer urls that bringing loads of impressions but very little (if any) clicks?

Thanks and your answer is much appreciate.

P.S. If you could give me a number to go by that would be great (just to start me off, and then I'll gradually find out what works for me). Also if you could give me "X" amount of days after creating an adgroup that a keyword is getting barely any impressions when to drop them?

Thanks again!

    1. "20-30 keywords per ad group" is arguable. There are AdWords experts out there who prefer 1 keyword per ad group.
    2. "barely any impressions" for a keyword doesn't necessarily mean a dud keyword. You could have a winner of a keyword for which Google, for any number of correctable reasons, has decided to give you a low impression share.
    3. "getting loads of impressions but very little clicks" may be correctable by playing around with match type, by using better ad copy, and so forth. Again, not necessarily a lousy keyword.
    4. "sending loads of clicks but no conversions" -- it's probably not politically correct to say so, but there are buyer countries and tire-kicker countries, and unfortunately, the tire-kicker countries are responsible for a ton of AdWords clicks. Consider targeting only buyer countries (search for lists) and maybe only certain devices.
Disclaimer: I haven't used AdWords for a couple of years.

    a) don't harm you

    b) does harm your CTR%

so drop b) immediately and keep a)
