ebook security / kindle compatible?

5 replies
I have done a bit of Googling on this but have yet to find the definitive answer. So hopefully you guys can bottom-line this for me straight away;

Is it possible to create an ebook that is readable on a Kindle AND is relatively secure? (ie; not just a .pdf that anyone can rip off and distribute willy nilly) Oh, I should qualify this question by adding that we are not interested in selling them through Amazon via their network, we want to sell them as we do now from our own online store.

The company I work for has been selling ebooks for a number of years now and they are in Ebook Gold format (PC .exe). So they have some level of security but are a bit clunky, not portable etc. (and yes, I know the whole security thing is probably not such an issue in most cases but it's not my books we're talking about or me that needs convincing :-)

Cheers!

    When you upload to Kindle on amazon, you can check the option if you want to DRM, which stands for Digital Rights Management.

      Thanks SunilTanna, however, we do not want to use Amazon we just want a Kindle readable format. (perhaps this is simply not possible, that's what I'm trying to find out)

    If you own a kindle, it pushes you to buy ebooks from Amazon, not look elsewhere. So while other formats may be readable, I doubt 99% of Kindle users know or care about them.

    Unless you control the users (like in-house users of a corporate ebook), go native on Kindle or you are most likely wasting your time.

    Well, it's not about marketing it's about selling ebooks we already have to customers we already have via an online store we already have. :-) We just want a better, more widely compatible format that also has some level of security.

    Is the only way into a Kindle via Amazon?

      There are several software packages that will allow you to put your books in the .mobi format used by Kindles.

      Beyond that, this should give you a running start on your research. Once you find the file format you want to use, you can usually find software to convert your books to that format.
