is promoting beach resorts and hotels consider a niche that is over popular? meaning is it a difficult niche market for affiliate marketing via agoda partners, cj.com etc?

    Thr are already many big and small players in the niche. My advice is go for a particular location that is new and more people are interested to go to that place in coming season.

    You can lookup the 2014 calender and see for mega events coming up and can target that event with your travel site and can also incorporate ticketing or booking facility with that.

    I just looked and found "goa holiday packages" which got me 4400 exact searches per month with just 63,000 results.

    Edit: I think its better to build a small niche site and concentrate on it.

        No ..... not a particular resort but a particular place.

        Thr are thousands of people who want to visit New York then you can target keywords like
        "new york packages"
        "week end new york" around 68000 exact matches

        You can build your site around these keywords and I am sure you'll get ur target audience and New York or any other popular place has tons of things ... that you can cover in you blog which the biggies like travel velocity and expedia will leave out.

        So my suggestion is to go for a niche site than for generic one.

          if i am doing it as a niche affiliate marketing, won't it be a tad too broad?

    I agree with the above. become an expert on a particular place or a
    particular reason for travel. you need to figure out a specific target
    audience.

    For affiliate they won't be the best niche to explore due to the merge commission you earn.

    I would suggest looking into a smaller niche you can even extract something out of hotel and resort.
