Should It be Allowed?...

by Jose Delgado 49 replies
I have seen other Forums that allow banners on the sig space.

Do you think this should be allowed? Now that images are allowed?

It will surely get more Click Throughs.

Interested in your opinions.

No I don't think it should be allowed. But what I think doesn't matter.

    Ask Allen.

And I'm sure that's one of the reasons why the poll system is available.
I think Admin made it clear above that this isn't one of the reasons the polls are available.
Might be wise to get a clue from that.

I can't seem to find the post you are referring to.

What I did find is that he strongly disagrees with the topic, as does all the posters - those for the topic don't seem to feel strongly enough to post. If we aren't allowed to discuss, suggest, poll anything regarding the forum that would be in the rules.

A poll is just that; a poll, not a demand, not even a suggestion.

BTW this forum is a democracy or rather a democratic monarchy since we as members moderate the forum but the king makes the laws.

Maybe I misinterpreted Allen's comment but when I saw "this is a poll that should never have been posted" my interpretation was "this isn't a good use of the poll function".

This is the quote I was actually responding to

the poll system is there for many purposes including seeing the popular votes on forum improvements.
My thinking was that it's wise to pay attention when admin doesn't like this type of "poll"; it's wise to read and heed rather than argue. I don't think of the WF as a democracy - but as a great gathering place for marketers to learn and share information. Allen's been great about responding to suggestions and asking members' opinions but maybe a poll is not the best way to suggest.

But, then, I could be totally wrong, too.

              Hey, Kay.

Go into your UserCP and click "edit options" under the "settings & options" tab in the UserCP left hand menu. Then scroll to the bottom of that page to Miscellaneous Options. There's a drop down box that will let you choose to have a full WYSIWYG editor. Then you can format your posts as well as use emoticons.

By allowing banners, I think it will bring more spammers..

In my opinion, rather not.. as it is easy to put banners by copy &
paste rather than writing your own signatures.. Spammers will be
delighted if banners are allowed.. Easy for them to implement..

    Don't you think so?

I have to concur with you guys. Banners are a distraction to me and I don't
think they should be posted everywhere by members.

I do however feel they have a place on this forum and their placements should
      be determined by Allen.

Yea it would be pointless and distracting. The WF should not be a place devoted to selling things, if it ever does then it will fail because it will serve no function to new people.

But what I think doesn't matter. I don't own this place, and they can do whatever they want, its not a democracy.

I voted no. There are some other forums I use just for fun, and some of them allow banners in the signatures. This takes up a LOT of space on the page and you have to scroll down a lot to actually read the content on the page. I think that text links will be just fine.

I think allowing graphics in the signature would ruin the atmosphere. People would get carried away, they would be flashy, and distracting...

We're all internet marketers here, right? I think we can handle creating a powerful enough message to attract click throughs.

I'm still zoned over the moving smilies I've seen posted in the OT - I HATE stuff moving around when I'm trying to focus on something. Banners? Ya just know someone would have stuff dancing all over them or flashing like a police car in the rearview mirror. Then there are all the issues previously mentioned.

This would be a HUGE distraction. I like coming to a place to converse and focus on business, not be advertised to. I don't mind the WSO ads or Sponsored Ads on the front page (because they are low-key and topical).

Banners? I can see it now... Flashing yellow and red really fast with a big font in blue saying "CLICK HERE!!!" Distracting? Yeah I'd say so...

Fistly, I have to agree that it would undermine the mission of the WF.

Secondly, I also hate flashing stuff when I want to read something.

Thirdly, it will probably attract spammers.

Lastly, the folks who still use dial up lines will have to wait forever while 25 banners are loading......

Guys, I want to make clear that this poll was just to see other Warriors opinions. I wasn't trying to abuse or in any way, offend Allen.

I as well as everyone here thinks that banners shouldn't even come to mind because it will never be happening. It would take a ton of time for all those distracting images to load. So yes, I agree with all of you and with Allen too.

Just wanted to see how you would respond and I'm way not surprised of everyone's responses. I am sure the "Yes" votes are all from either Spammers, or total Newbiew.

So you never listen to customer suggestions or opinions? They must take it or leave it.

Polls are great ways to test opinion, improve one's product, establish where to from here, etc.

And I'm sure that's one of the reasons why the poll system is available.

I understand what you're saying, but if Allen wanted customer suggestions or feedback on this topic, he would take it upon himself to conduct the poll. But he knows that banner sigs have a 0% chance of improving the WF "product" or making members happier (so it's a moot point even if a handful would like the change).

I say, feel free to discuss things like this, but when it comes to taking polls about changes and/or improvements to the Warrior Forum the most respectful thing to do would be to let Allen conduct his own polls (if he sees fit).

And the new improved forum gives us a lot of great new toys to play with, the poll fuction just one of them.

Polls discussing forum features and benefits are part of the forum experience, nothing more.

This particlular poll topic has had no takers, even without Allen's post, so it was going nowhere. Another poll on another topic may lad to some interesting discussions.

I agree with the consensus, it would be a problem,

Not because banners are bad, but because someone would abuse the privilege.

You would see, huge banners, that totally distract from the content of the post.

I have seen this tried before and it always ends the same a few ruin it for the rest, by creating large, obtrusive banners, that flash, crash, and everything in between,

Good thoughts, but human nature being what it is, eventually it always ends the same.

No, I do not want to see banners. I have visited many posts where avatars and banners are big flashing monstrosities that interfere with viewing the posts. If your sig file is compelling enough then people will follow that to your web site where you can display all the graphics you want.
