Greetings warriors,

I have an interesting question (interesting to me anyway).

Background: I recently purchased a new domain name and starting getting it all set up (content, backlinks, etc.). Normally, I check the archive dot org WayBackMachine to make sure I'm not taking on someone else's problem site, but apparently I neglected to do that this time.

Anyway, since it was a new domain, I never bothered to check domain age. Well, imagine my surprise when I noticed it says my domain is 4 years old. Wha wha wha what?!

There's an archived version of my domain for part of 2005 and 2006, but nothing after.

So here's my question (actually two): will my domain name/site retain that age or will it be wiped out after google's next pr update? Also, since it appears google wants a site to be at least 6 months old and active before approving a new adsense account, do I need to post for six months if I use that site on my application, or will the domain age itself be enough?

Thanks for any input you guys can give!
Cindy

I'm not really positive on this, but as I understand it if the domain has been dropped it will lose PR, backlinks and will be considered a new domain. Google updates about 4 times a year (I think) and it may be cached, but when it updates you'll lose the PR, the backlinks will eventually disappear if the searchengines keep coming back and finding no pages (old pages).

I usually check if it's dropped at dnscoop.com and betterwhois.com. And put yourdomain.com in the Google searchbox to to see if it's been banned.

    Hi Cindy

What you need to determine is whether the domain is still indexed in google. You indicate that it has PR so I would assume that it is indexed, so that's not such a bad start.

Next make sure that the PR is genuine and not fake, use a service like dig pagerank to check. If its not fake then still good

Your question about PR dropping... This normally depends on if the back links previously associated with the domain are still "intact". Do a BL check (on yahoo) and see if there are still BL's showing, if they are then there is a chance that the PR will stay. Just add a few more links to the domain to ensure that the PR is retained.

As for the adsense question, i am honestly not too sure, I'm sure an adsense expert can answer that. My hunch would be that if the above elements hold then it should be ok

    cheers

Hey Alan - thanks for the links. I've bookmarked them for future reference.

Kess - sorry, I wasn't very clear. The domain didn't have any residual pr (of which I'm aware anyway). It just showed up as being 4 years old. I wondered if it would lose it's age when google does the next pr update.

I'm not sure if it was indexed prior to my adding unique content or not, since at the time I wasn't aware it had been previously active. It's indexed now, based on my own content and structure, though.

At any rate, next time I'd better make sure to check ALL my new domains to see if they had a 'previous life', hadn't I?

    Thanks for your input, guys!

Over time, all expired domains will drop on pr and backlinks..

But you can make money on expired domains.. in the following way.

      1) build a site related to what the site was used for.. check the archive history sites.
and put adsense on your new site on the expired name you got...

      2) put a For sale sign on your website saying the domain is for sale... if you do not want to build sites... for the expired domains you get.. park them on sedo..

I did this back in 2003-2004 and I bought 10K worth of expiring names... And I had a lot of the original owners contact me to get their names back.. I added $100 to the name and gave it back to them..

but I still made a load from parking the name.

      3) You can find names... with traffic... put a site/blog on them... spend $100-200 to develop the name and promote it for a few months... and you can then sell it for X10 you paid for it..
