need advice! starting local business and so confused on web hosting

I currentlly have some services I'd like to advertise to my local community. Ive been stuck on deciding which web hosting to use. According to what ive read if you have a local business, its better to find a hosting server closer to your location for better rankings on google. Because when a seacher seaches for you on google, google doesnt have to go through so many steps, page speed, etc........Ive been so frustrated with this. if I live in tampa does that mean I must find a web hosting company in tampa? or does it just need to be in the US. Or may I use hostgator or godaddy? I never thought choosing web hosting would be so hard. plz help

There are many, many factors that influence
    rankings on google.

I've used hostgator and ranked sites in Australia and the UK.

Locations isn't as big of a factor as some make it out to be. Google search some general terms, then trace the top sites back and see where they're hosted.

Just use a webhost with servers within the same country. Personally, I'd suggest avoiding any host owned by EIG (see this list Endurance International Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), which now includes Hostgator and several other large brands. I would also avoid GoDaddy. I've found that Lunar Pages and Arvixe are pretty good hosts.

If you are not using the site for ecommerce, then a simple shared hosting plan will be fine.

The big thing is trying to do locally-focused SEO, which includes getting other local sites with links to your web pages. There are a number of things you can do, such as listing your business location with Google Places . Perhaps find non-competing business with websites and see if they'd link to your website. You might be able to do an exchange. Preferably businesses that are related to or compliment your business. These days, having a presence on Twitter and Facebook are important. You can keep in touch with your customers, send them discount notices and specials, etc. If you choose to hire a local SEO, make sure they don't use spam techniques to get backlinks, ultimately causing more harm than good. A locally-focused SEO may already have a network of blogs and sites that can point to your site.

It is a slow, continuous process of building up your site ranking, for your preferred keywords.

I would not go with godaddy, they are only good for domain names. Hostgator is not bad for webhosting and neither is eleven2. There are other factors more important than server location when it comes to google rankings, so I would look for a host you can be comfortable with and go from there. Good luck

Thank you for all replying, im very grateful

How did you start with your online business? I mean isn't one of the the first things you must do is get web hosting and buy a website then work on SEO? Im trying to learn SEO but I can't even get past the web hosting for a local business stage.

Server location: tightly related to the above one, this one is important to mention for a number of reasons. For us the most important reason is that Google considers the server "physical" location when ranking a website in both local and general search (for location-specific searches). So if you are creating a website for your local business and expect people to search it by location, find the hosting provider nearby. (source: search engine journal)

When was that written? I don't think that really applies these days. Google has evolved a lot, even in just the past few months.

Give yourself a pad on the back and be cool. Don't give yourself so much pressure on which hosting to go with. It's important, yes!!! but truly... it's not the most important of all (it's quite flexible to migrate server if you don't like your host).

Like the above mentioned, I would strongly suggest that you stay away from EIG. Bluehost, hostgator and many other 'famous' (soon to be notorious/infamous) hosts out there are part of that giant company, EIG. My sites were down for more than 6 hours hosted in one EIG hosting company. Needless to say, I migrated server My sites are currently hosted under liquidweb.

Oh heavens. Someone, somewhere has steered you wrong. Webhosting is the least, most teensiest part of the equation. Only factor there is like others have posted- that it is in your same country and most importantly...that it is reliable. There are many hosting companies out there that get gliches and end up having your site down a few days a month. Other than that, pick a reliable one that will work with the platform that you plan on building your site on. That's the main focus. Like others have posted here, once you have your site up, if it's a local business, you can easily get it to rank by submitting it to the free local directories like google places, yahoo local, bing, yelp, merchantcircle and then also utilize the virality of facebook, pinterest and youtube. With those tactics, along with onpage SEO, you can dominate your local market.

I have a free online tutorial that covers all of it. PM me and I can forward to you the link.

Hostgator and Godaddy are both the top class web hosting providers.
But hostgator has great customer support 24-7.

Neither of those hosts are recommended.

HostGator have migrated customers from the SoftLayer datacenter to the Bluehost data centers which are overloaded and has resulted in downtime for many customers sites.

Let me understand your question. You mean to say that will your domain name have a .wordpress.com on it?

Well, if you've signed up with WordPress for free, yes. However, for $18 a year, you can get a dot com domain name without 'WordPress' figuring into it. Is that what you're looking for? Let me know if you have other WordPress-related queries.

        No.

Virtually all webhosts use some form of script auto installer, such as Softalicious or Fantastico. Sometimes they'll simply list Wordpress for you to click on and install. All webhosts worth their salt will make sure they are able to install Wordpress with ease. It is the most popular script.

Typically, you would log into cPanel of your webhost. From there look for any button that mentions installing various popular scripts, such as Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, and others. Simply click on the Wordpress option and fill in the fields as part of the installation process. Its pretty much step by step the whole way. During the installation process (or after) you set the name of the site, which directory you'll install it, and a bunch of other stuff. Wordpress is so user-friendly its ridiculous. You can completely customize your site and make it your own. Tons of fantastic plugins and themes available.

Once installed, take a look at the plugins (once you are in your Wordpress admin console) and choose 'Popular' which will list some plugins for SEO, security, sitemaps, CAPTCHA, and many others.

Once you see how quick and easy it is to install and customize you'll want to make a hundred more sites.

Just go ahead and set yourself up with good shared hosting.

I came up with a short list of shared hosting providers that seem reasonable and don't get many bad reviews:
          Glowhost
          Arvixe
          PacificHost
          Frog Host - Web Hosting
          Site5 Web Hosting
          Siteground
          JaguarPC

I'm in the process of moving several of my sites to Glowhost, because they seemed to be the best deal for me.

Hostgator, Hostmonster, Bluehost, Ipage, JustHost and FatCow are all heavily promoted hosts that are owned by EIG and are all hosted in the same datacenter owned by EIG and are quickly gaining a reputation for bad customer service and lousy performance.
See a complete list of EIG sites here:

I agree with Robin. EIG really has messed most of these websites up pretty bad. Except for Bluehost maybe. A friend told me those guys are still providing decent service. Not recommending them personally though, mind you.

As far as WordPress hosting goes, I've just registered with IX Web Hosting. Those guys seem to know what they're doing.

For location-related searches, get your site on Google Places. That is much more relevant than where your host is located. A reliable host with minimum downtime is much better than a local host that does not give the same reliability. I have used hostgator for years and they have never let me down.

I work from Australia and have tried hosting services in Australia but have not in 15 years found a good one!

I use 2 USA hosting services for my local Australian Websites and I've never had a problem getting good search engine rankings.

I use reseller hosting at Hostgator for all of my Wordpress sites and find them excellent. Their value for money with great service is hard to beat.

Sorry to be blunt but - STOP WASTING YOUR TIME WORRYING ABOUT THIS STUFF.

The biggest thing that will impact your business is your marketing and relationships with your potential customers, prospects and partners.

Who you host your website with and how you build your site are pretty much irrelevant in most situations.

If you're just starting and having trouble getting out of the starting blocks because of this stuff - ignore it. Find a local web guy and just take his advice and move on.

This stuff really should not be stopping you moving your business forward.

I have to disagree with you there Andyhenry. Who you host your website with is crucial towards ensuring its health. More and more businesses are increasingly depending on their websites for disseminating information and sales. So it is definitely not irrelevant.

'Finding a local web guy' is not the answer. The website owner should have a fair idea on how to build his/her website and whom to host with.

There's a reason why web hosting is such a competitive market. There's a reason why there are so many forums and customer review websites on web hosting. And that's because it is crucial to one's website, and consequently, one's business.

        You're free to disagree.

And I actually agree with most of your points. I've used about 50 web hosts over the last 20 years with various degrees of experience.

However - changing hosts is easy and the point I am making is really that when starting out, your business should not be on hold over such a decision.

You can easily change to a different host - most good hosting companies will even transfer your site for you.

More important for being found on Google is how you set up your sites and how you structure them. Some SEO done right can go a long way.
