Chrome Plated Google

I just saw this announcement of Chrome by Google on Techcrunch.

It looks like Google are entering the browser wars with a vengeance. And based on the Techcrunch article (or one of them) Chrome is aimed squarely at Microsoft.

I also have to wonder what effect this will have web activity. If Google controls search, advertising, and the browser, doesn't this make them even more powerful and capable of exercising their will over all?

  • I can't wait until they get classified as a monopoly and locked down as much as Microsoft is.

Anyway, Chrome is basically just Safari. Same rendering engine, but with Google's bland UI.

I don't use any Google service other than their search engine and AdWords, neither of which are enhanced by using a Google Browser, so no interest here. Glad I won't need it to test against since I can use Safari for that.
  • The concept behind the browser is something we have needed for a while, if it keeps individual programs from freezing a browser up, then that's a good thing but I am beginning to wonder if Google is becoming to big for it's boots.

You can bet your bottom dollar that somewhere down the line contextual advertising based on your searches etc are going to make into your browser somehow.

Is this convergence or domination, to early to tell..
  • I think I'll stick with FireFox for the time being.

I'm not sure I want Google to monitor all my online activities!

    • I like the concept.. with enhanced tab functions etc with no freezing and would welcome it if it's as smooth as they make out..

I will definitely download it later ... it's due to Beta today I think?
