Personal project management

How do you guys manage your time? I have several tools I use for productivity - but now and then I wonder: am I allocating the right amount of time to this project? Should it be broken down more or should it be done quicker? How do you figure it out?

Managing different projects takes different amounts of time. The best gauge, un my opinion, is to figure out what your time is worth on a particular project. Basically how much is it making you vs. the time put into it. Break it down to an hourly or daily rate and then decide if your time is worth the money you are getting from it.

    Hi,

It is usually for me to start doing the regular daily job with allocated list for job for next day ...

I dunno if I made it clear.. but I suppose I am wondering how people decide on how long a task will take... what metrics do you use to determine how long you should spend on tasks such as
      blog posts
      articles
      video
      press releases
      etc.

Setting rules for yourself like "I will only spend 52 minutes per blog post" will be counterproductive.

Go back to the old 80/20 rule - allocate 80% of your time to the 20% of your activities that actually bring results. Judging by your list here, that 20% is mainly content creation.

Let's say you have 100 hours per month for business. It keeps the arithmetic simple, and is the equivalent of a basic part time job.

In this example, you would allocate 80 hours for content creation. Give each individual piece of content a priority rating, stack your content goals for that month in order, then start working on that piece. When it's done, start on the next. When your 80 hours for the month are used up, you're done for the month unless something happens to add more time.

As for productivity tools, I spent some time trying on many different tools, and I found myself spending more time working with the tool than actually working. I went back to my prioritized task list, and keep a day's worth on a 3x5 index card that slips in my pocket.

Thanks John - that actually explains it the way I needed it... btw if you use Chrome, I recommend a really nice extension called Strict Work Flow - I use it all the time now and it is so basic and easy to use i find it invaluable - give it a try!
