first what type of video are you going to make? are they videos you record from screen? if so your best bet is Camstasia. If not don' worry because almost any respectable video editing software will have an HD output.

For youtube alternatives you can use
Vimeo
Dailymotion
or even consider Blip Tv if you want to make a series. However there is no real alternative to youtube if you want to go viral though it's not really automatic as you have to promote your videos on twitter and facebook.

But keep in mind that YouTube has so much more traffic than the competition.

If you have a little money to spend on video software, I suggest Pro Show. You can use it to put video slideshows of either text or images together and add background music. The Gold version was only 60 bucks last time I checked.

Powtoon.com is real cool video creation site. Takes a little getting used to but very worth it.

Video optimization is good for traffic, youtube, dailymotion, vimeo are best to share your videos and get huge traffic.

I will suggest you to go through with Animoto,where you can create high quality video..

A great tool I use which is from a guy on WSO slide2share, just search it. You can build great slide share videos and the tool can search for royalty free images too.

I have made quite a few videos from it and uploaded it to YT and dailymotion, I find these to be the best results.

You may as well call it YouTube marketing and not video marketing as they control the majority of the traffic.

Here's a couple of suggestions when making videos:

1. Target keywords (not only do people search directly on YouTube, but it's fairly clear that YT videos are ranking like crazy at the moment)
2. Build links to your videos (because Google is giving preference to videos, it has never been easier to rank them on page 1)
3. Be a pro (please do me a favor and edit your videos. I'm so tired of seeing teenage girls mumble on for 10 minutes about why they liked some weight loss supplement. No one cares!)

Lastly, Youtube rankings are determined based off the following:

- keyword relevancy (in the title, description and tags)
- view count
- like count
- number of subscribers
- number of comments
- and I believe Shares but don't quote me on that

You could of course pay for all these. However if you're planning on creating valuable videos targeting specific keywords, you won't have too. People will like, share, comment and subscribe because they want to.
