When Should I Start Sending Out Emails To My Mailing List?

I've got 29 subscribers on my Aweber list in the Kindle writer's niche so far. I haven't sent out my first email broadcast yet, and I have a question...

Question - When should I start sending out emails? Should I wait until I get 50 or 100 emails on my list, or should I start mailing right away?

I put all subs on the same schedule, whether #1 or #10,000

You should start immediately while the subscriber still has you on his/her mind. If you use an email handler like Aweber you can schedule your emails to be sent a certain time after the person signs up. You can preload a year or two worth of emails and have it send them on a schedule.

For example you schedule a welcome email to be sent immediately after sign up then schedule a new email that will come 3 days after the first email. Aweber will then automatically send the emails for you and each person on your list will be on their own schedule. The guy who signed up today will receive your welcome email but someone else may receive email number 20 on the same day.

Ya you should set up an autoresponder in Aweber. This way, when someone opts in, regardless of when they opted in, they will receive the same emails from you when you schedule them.

I like to write about 7 emails promoting the product they signed up for and introducing them to my list.

After that they just get my broadcasts

But like people are saying, it is important that you start emailing immediately while it's fresh on their mind. They opted in because they are interested in what you are offering at the time. Who knows if they will still be interested in a week or two.

I hear a lot of people say you shouldn't sell for a couple of weeks... In my opinion you sell while it's still fresh on their mind.

Then you start sending them quality emails too.

This way it gets rid of all the people that are going to be offended by you selling to them (don't want them on your list anyways) and keeps the people that may be buying from you. Then you can build a relationship & have a big list of buyers!

Obviously I've over simplified this it takes a lot more but I hope I've given you a little idea of what you need to do

        Hope this helps,

        David

have at least 5 to 10 emails set up to send at intervals of 2-3 days.

try not to go straight for the sale in your earlier messages. if you have something to sell straight away, try putting the link at the bottom.

give them some valuable information, introduce yourself, etc. the idea is to get them accustomed to receiving emails from you and to have a relationship going.

you might also want to create a facebook fanpage/group or google+ community so you can invite them join where you can also interact with them.

In my first list I had only 25 subscribers. I sent them out an email and made over $1,000.00 right away, 2 sales later. I think it was my best campaign. I just knew what people wanted instead of trying to advertise them. I hope this answers your question.

      Very good answers! Thank you
I will consider all of these. I will start setting up my emails tomorrow

I dont mean to steal the OPs thread but I feel like it ties into the question and may help them out as well.....
What is the general average that is agreed to be the rule of thumb as to how far apart to space your emails?
I see some people saying to email everyday. some say every 2-3 days and some only once a week....
What say you? What spacing has worked best for YOU?

First off, did you make any promises?

If you said you would send a weekly newsletter, you have your answer. If you really meant "some generic tip once a week and every affiliate promo I can copy/paste whenever I can", you should have said so.

I'm on lists where I was promised daily emails, so I'm not bothered by daily emails. I knew what to expect going in.

I'm also on lists that promise emails monthly, with "occasional" special issues. For some of them, that means a few times a month with a short "thought you might like this" link to a video or blog post or news story. For others, that means "every promo I can possibly make a nickel on, as often as I can".

My problem isn't even with the promos themselves, although I don't care for the evident laziness or lack of creativity. That, however, is a discussion for another day. My problem is with the promise of one thing and delivery of another.

If you promise to keep your subscribers up to date on the latest products available, as soon as they are available, email away.

You may have to do some experimentation to find the balance between not being a pest or a liar, and not being forgotten. Once you find that balance, establish an expectation and be consistent with it.

John, that is THE answer to THE question.

If you promise to keep your subscribers up to date on the latest products available, as soon as they are available, email away.
I don't think anybody starts accumulating an email list just because they like to make lists, unless they have a very severe problem with ADHD. Usually, the idea is to get a list of people to ultimately sell to.

It took me too long to learn that I needed to know exactly what kind of people I wanted on a list-of-people-that-I-wanted-to-sell-to. I started at the end result I wanted and worked backwards all the way to my squeeze/landing/blog page where they hopefully would show up to get on my list.

Not something you accomplish in 15 minutes. Maybe 15 hours of serious thinking. It would follow that having in mind what I'd email these well-chosen prospects would be paramount, before I have them in my autoresponder.

I've currently sending every 2-3 days. I don't want to overload them with emails, because that's the reason I unsubscribe from many lists myself.
I think once a week could work, but it's just too little for me to be able to experiment and learn from sending emails to my list.
I would definetely like to see more answers on this question. You should make a thread for it. Please send me the thread link in a PM if you do!

It really varies, as you have clearly noticed by now. Personally, this is what I did with one of my lists (using an autoresponder series):

          Month One:
          - I sent pure value twice a week for about 4 weeks, no catch.

          - At the end of the 4th week I sent them a related product. It's not even an affiliate link, but rather a product that I genuinely think will help them (I use it myself everyday.) Note: That email officially introduced my list to products, so that was my reward.

(No complaints and no unsubscribers so far. A few of them have also clicked the link inside the product email, which is a good sign)

          Month Two:
(Now I have slowed my emails to only once a week, because I feel like I've established enough trust and I don't want to overwhelm my subscribers with information overload)

          - Week 1: I once again sent them a valuable email; not a product, and no catch
          - Week 2: I sent them an affiliate link. So far no complaints or unsubs.

Note: This is as far as this post goes because the list is only 2 months old as of this writing.

My Personal Plan for Month 2 and Beyond:

          Week 1: Free value
          Week 2: Related valuable product
          Week 3: Free value
Week 4: Monthly recap; Here I'll get the chance to re-introduce week 2's product

          Further Notes:

So far I have NO plans to send a broadcast because it disrupts continuity -- as Alexa and/or others have pointed out several times before -- and I agree. That is, unless I have something very important to announce...

Also, and I don't know how effective this is: Try not to send all your emails on the same day to keep things a tad more dynamic.

Lastly, I started sending my emails between Wednesdays and Fridays on month 2 (and beyond.) Why? Well, I would think most people are in a better mood toward the weekend. To me this signifies LESS complaint rates from disgruntled people who may let their anger out on you (even if you're not at fault.) And finally, most people get paid toward the weekend. So: Better mood + Payday = More willingness to give my recommended product a try. That, combined with the already-established trust and the products' quality, of course...

Note, OP, that this is merely my own personal plan. It may or may not help you -- but I hope it does help you and everyone else. Best of luck!

    YESTERDAY

building lists and sending well written copy to my list is responsible for making 10's of thousands of dollars.

When I finally figured this out, got married, and my income went through the roof. I did find this out later in my IM career, but its fun, and the best thing anyone can do for their business. Build lists, and send automated messages.

start immediately, your subscribers are the most responsive when they have just signed up so it would be better to have a series of emails scheduled out initially for regardless of when they sign up or how may you have and then when you get to your number that you prefer 50 /100 or whatever then do the broadcast, but never wait too long to send your first email

To answer your original question, you should have started emailing as soon as you had a) someone to send to and b) something worth sending.

It depends on how you do it.

If you set people up to subscribe by promising tips, don't slap them in the face with a hard-sell promotion the first step out of the gate.

If you can combine some solid information which would benefit them without the affiliate product, you can tease them with a promise of an easier way (in the next email) and slip the affiliate link in for those "who can't wait".

Remember, an email address is not a lifetime license to hammer people. It's permission to begin building whatever type of relationship you led them to expect when they signed up. Abuse that permission, and it can be recinded with a single click on the unsubscribe link.

I would agree with the posts above, and thank them for thier input.
If you do not send out to your list you will lose them you must keep the list interested with good content and keep them comming back for more,
its hard enough to get people to subcribe to you, so the way to go is keeping in touch, like you would a friend.

We need to differentiate here between "broadcast" emails and "autoresponder" emails.

You should be sending a series of autoresponder emails straight away after someone signs up to your list perhaps every few days to build up a relationship with your list and provide useful information.

A broadcast email is when you have an important message to send at a particular time - so it could be an affiliate offer with an end time for a discount for example. - Again I wouldn't wait. While the statistics might say you will only get one sale for every 100 subscribers (for example) who's to say that the one sale isn't from your only 10 subscribers? It doesn't hurt to send a broadcast to find out.

    Kind regards

The truth is that you have to prepare a series of email messages even before having any subscriber, so that you may immediately start sending messages as soon as they sign up. It they will have to wait a month to receive your second message they may forget who you are.

Well... I usually schedule email right away (after they opted in), with mail about me (who am I, 25 answers about me, bla bla).
After that I schedule next mail day after... some light things, not advertising...

And 3rd mail is 2 days after previous one... and there I start the game

I suggest to send out as early as possible, so that you can make and learn from any mistakes which you may make in email marketing before your subscriber list gets too large.
As your subscriber list is still quite low, the mistakes made should not have significant negative impact. When you have many more subscribers, you would have learnt not to make any of the mistakes which you have made previously.

    Hope it helps.

definitely start sending emails right away - they opted in for whatever you offered so follow up.

first, I would send a welcome/thank you message

then, it depends on what they opted in to...

if it was for a newsletter or tips or something, then just start off with some free information, just bite sized little chunks so they can see you know what you are talking about - build your credibility

then later you can follow up with some other offers - just one at a time and give them multiple opportunities (emails) to purchase - customers don't always buy the first time they see an offer or they may not have seen it, so follow up with a couple more opportunities to purchase the same item, then back to your content messages and so on.

It's 50 - 50 situation, If you wait for subscriber to reach 50 or 100 then you are not sure how long it will take,
And If you send the latest offers to your list may be someone is interested in buying then there is nothing wrong with it.

This question gets asked alot and there is really one answer. You start sending emails to your list when you have something interesting for them to read! It can be technical advice, critique/review, product recommendation, etc. Reviews have always been my bread and butter. Other people have good responsive lists because they give good technical advice. Don't get caught up in Internet Marketing guruism and think you must always email at a certain interval. It is this simple. You email when you have something interesting to communicate.

Is this a broadcast to sell something or a follow up series ? I think you need to send regular follow ups to "develop the relationship" or at worst make sure they don't forget who you are. If they have 50 or so emails each day, it would be pretty easy to forget you if they never hear from you. If the broadcast is a pitch type communication, I would only do that if the product was good and I thought it could really help. I'd even think about reviewing it on my blog.

They get the first email as soon as they subscribe. The follow up sequence should be at least 2-3 times a week in order to start building trust right away.
