backing up your sites

Good day all,

I was just starting a cpanel based backup of one of my sites which of course would need root to restore, and I was curious what everyone else does for backups. I normally have the scheduled backup in cpanel and then every time I make a major change such as a software version update or a site redesign I take a ftp based download and compress that as a archive on my home comp. I was really looking to see if anyone had a cheap or free way to do this or does FTP and a zip archive seem to be the best road?

How big is your code + media + data? Do you have shell access to the site?

If so, it's pretty simple to ssh in and grab it with a regularly running script, or to write a script that will run on the server and put a backup in, say an S3 account every night.

    Hi greg80221

Hostgator is offering now the cloud backup service.

You can check it if it's a good option for you.

    Thanks

Here's my two cents since I spent significant time researching backup plugins for WordPress a few months ago after I got fed up with one of the paid ones - won't mention the name here.

There is absolutely no reason to pay even 5 bucks for a plugin that backs up and/or clones your WP site - even if you want to sell clones of sites, etc. There are free plugins that have been thoroughly reviewed and proven to be more reliable, easier to use and have the same or more features than pretty much any paid product on the market. Research reviews on Google, download and TRY the free ones - they are free after all... and make up your own mind. Maybe a year or so ago things would be different, but today the free plugins are great and I have used them on Bluehost and Hostgator with no problems whatsoever. No worries about licenses and support issues either.

The two that I currently use and can vouch for on Hostgator and Bluehost are:

WordPress › Duplicator « WordPress Plugins

Great for backing up to your PC and for cloning sites. If cloning/moving your site, it even installs the version of WordPress you're using for you, so nothing is necessary except for a domain with hosting. Upload the installer file and the backup file, run the installer and you're done.

WordPress › UpdraftPlus - WordPress Backup and Restoration « WordPress Plugins

Great for backing up to locations such as Amazon S3 (or compatible), Dropbox, Rackspace Cloud Files, Google Drive, Google Cloud Storage, DreamHost DreamObjects, FTP and email. I use it to backup to Amazon S3. You can pay for an addon to migrate your site, but since duplicator does that I haven't had the need to buy it. Their support staff is stellar.

      Hope that helps!

I do daily backups of all my Wordpress sites both from the cPanel and also from an automated plug-in within Wordpress. I get the plug-in to send me the backups via email, and then I download them to my computer so I can sleep at night

I predominately use Wordpress for all my sites, so that makes it easy for me. I am not a nerdy expert, although I would not mind knowing a bit more techy stuff

So I solved my problem just like I do when I want my Wordpress site to do something, I found a plugin that backs up my site that I am extremely happy with.

If there are other ways to back up stuff, well, I have no clue and I would need a real expert but for the time being Backup Creator works great for me and now it integrates with S3 and Dropbox for extra peace of mind.

Great thread. Look forward to learning new things.

      Have a great one.

Today, temporary links are meaningless for website because it will increase your ranking for particular time periods after that it will count as a bad link. I simply mean that you should build permanent links for your website. When you build eCommerce website, product submission is best best option for that.
