WARNING to all Canadian's

FYI

Yesterday I got a call from someone claiming they where from the CRA and wanted to talk to me about my Incorporation that I had filed.

I said pardon?

I never filed for an Incorporation...

So, I asked the following questions:

1. When did I file it?
2. How did I file my last tax return?
3. What is my Social Insurance Number?
4. Is there a number I can call you back at in a few minutes, I'm in the middle of a business transaction.

And you know what... they couldn't answer any of these questions so I hung up and immediately called the fraud department.

It seems there is a company out there claiming to be working with the CRA to "help" you file for am incorporation.

So, be careful and make sure you know the person on the other end of the phone is who they say they are. And never give any personal information over the phone until you establish their identity as being truthful.

  • Thanks for the heads up! I was familiar with the fake CRA email phishing scams etc, however the incorporation angle via a phone call is a new twist. Good to know. Thanks.

You did the right thing! It sounds like they were trying to get you to offer your information to them by tricking you with questions then they could steal your identity or do something real bad to you.

    Scary ...

Well, they didn't ask me many questions... I asked them all those questions to qualify them as being who they say they are. If it where the real CRA then they would have all those questions at the click of a button right in front of them.

Telephone fraud seems to be taking over from email fraud. I guess most people are wise to the scam emails now. So the fraudsters have moved on to the phone. Thanks for the warning.

Ha ha they have always been on the phone since before email was around. The thing is, they are just still there. Email fraudsters are still there, as well.

If something seems weird and not right, it may be a scam so be careful out there, folks!

The telephone scam isn't new they abandoned it for the email now the email isn't converting well enough and then they are back to cold calling.

Why can't these fraudsters see they have talents they can explore?

It sounds like the CRA in Canada is kind of like the BBB here in the States. Thanks for the heads up, and glad you didn't fall for it.

Lol, well I guess they don't believe they have any talent, so instead of selling something of value, they resort to this. It's too bad though, cause I know not everyone will see through their deception.

It's more like your IRS. (Internal Revenue Service.)

CRA Stands for "Canada Revenue Agency".

Thanks for the warning. It's useful for even non-Canadians as there are so many scams out there.

The real question here Mike is how did the caller know that you had recently filed your incorporation papers?

Then again, they could have been calling about your pardon application

[slaps forehead] I never filed incorporation papers... (I stated that in my first post, read a little further) and I'm assuming they got my name and number from one of my websites help desks.

    Interesting.

I received a call the other day and the person asked for me and then proceeded to ask for my D.O.B., S.I.N, home address etc. I asked who they were and they said they couldn't tell me until I confirmed who I was!!! Oh really!?!?!?!?! When I pointed out that they had called me, they became rather impatient and told methat I really wanted to hear what they were calling about. Wrong! I laughed...shared a few choice words and promptly hung up.

Do people actually fall for this??????
