What is a good alexa ranking?

In 3 months I want to drop my alexa rank to 80k, its a start right? But n 6-9 months i want it to be 10k. Would 10 k alexa rank mean I would be starting to have serious potential for getting advertising revenues?

What is a good alexa ranking, generally speaking (whatever the niche)?

PS: GOt my first adsense check!! I know its not much but its a start

There's no such thing. It's all nonsense. All it can ever measure is the number of visitors a site gets who have the Alexa Toolbar installed and running in their browser at the time of their visit. And internet marketers are the only people who use that.

And even that, it can measure only terribly unreliably and randomly. Which is why it's a complete waste of time. They can't measure any other traffic. The only way to monitor traffic is through a site's server logs.

The last time I looked at my "Alexa rankings", I checked out two of my sites. One, which is a private blog only really for my rather widespread family and gets almost no traffic at all, had a really low "Alexa ranking", meaning that they think it "gets enormous traffic" (but not according to my server logs!), and the other, which genuinely gets so much traffic, in floods, that I have to have special hosting for it, is apparently nowhere to be seen!

It really is as unreliable as that.

But when you look at what it's actually measuring, that's not a great surprise.

These things are of possible, slight, debatable relevance if you're (i) selling a website to someone who for some reason "believes in it", or (ii) selling advertising space on a website to someone who for some reason believes in it. For anyone else, and any other purposes, I think it's more or less a total waste of time, signifying nothing.

    Clarified here ...
Does Alexa give total traffic qty?
    (newb) Is Alexa important?
    How important is Alexa ranking?
    Importance of Alexa.
How do you find the guru sites that are highest ranking in Alexa?

I know its not a good measurement but its still a valid metric. If i get 600 visitors a day but i have 500k alexa, what would be the point? I mean its a meaningless stats but its still an important metrics no? I wouldnt buy advertising based on alexa ranking but you get what I mean right? Below 100k would be a start no?

What's the difference between "good" and "valid" (or between "measurement" and "metric"?!). With my sites, it's ludicrously inaccurate. It thinks my lowest-traffic site is a very high traffic site, and it thinks that one of my sites which gets astonishing traffic-volumes (even to me) gets almost no traffic at all. For me, it's just a joke. :p

What I get is that you think it's of relevance to you. I tried for a few minutes to persuade you that it shouldn't be, and I failed. Well, I can live with that. More importantly than any of this, I wish you continued growth in your AdSense checks!

Yes, I do believe alexa ranking has no relevance at all. You convinced it me to it dear but what I mean it's still a metric. Do advertisers consider alexa ranking? I think yes and no.Like i said i would never buy advertising based only on alexa ranking of a website. As a webmaster or blogger, you can't say alexa ranking is totally not consireded. For sure, the amount of traffic is the best way to get advertisers but what proof I can provide to advertisers? My GA reports, alexa ranking? I mean, Alexa ranking is still...a ranking.

Yes; I also think yes and no. It's possible that the ill-informed and misguided ones do, but there might be quite a few of them, and their money is as good as anyone else's? Here you have a good point, and I can't deny it.

For sure - neither would I. But you can't legislate for other people's weird beliefs, and if you're selling advertising space on a blog that caters to the IM-advice industry, it may then be relevant to some of your potential customers.

Alexa rankings aren't good or valid. Since it is primarily dependent on whether or not a site visitor has the Alexa toolbar or extension installed when they visit your site, it's nowhere near being a true representation of traffic or anything else.

I have been blogging since 2007 and have been asked for my Alexa ranking less than 5 times (and not at all in the past year) when approached by advertisers. Most don't really look to your Alexa score as being very meaningful.

Alexa just rank sites from 1 to 1000000000000000000 according to the traffic it receives.

The site receiving the highest amount of traffic is ranked number 1 and the site receiving the least traffic is ranked 1000000000000000000 or the last.

I would never bother myself about this.

Focus on getting more traffic to your site and don't ever take a look at Alexa again.

I love the Alexa toolbar, and utilize it fully since, you know, I am an Internet Marketer after all.

The Alexa toolbar stats are quite useful, especially if you spend a lot of time and search for specific type of sites that are in the IM and Tech niche. NO, I'm sure the stats aren't 100% correct. But they are probably more accurate than you may think and they do update daily.

But enough about that and back to the original question.

A good Alexa rank in my opinion would be anything in the top 100,000 since they only show that in their graph.

    cheers

Also note that Alexa has two ratings: Global Rank and Rank in United States. Of course, your US rank is a lower number than the global one. Which one do you present?

Alexa is a decent metric. It varies a lot at the wide end (actual traffic vs. rank) but anything under 100k is where "good" starts. Most members on this forum don't even get that. When you start to close in on 50k, 25k, 10k -- then the wild swings get less and less. And you should be getting several thousand daily members.

Advertisers use it, so it's important.

This site is currently #190, and I doubt anyone running it would says Alexa is "unimportant".

I ignore it completely unless I'm trying to flip a Web site (which I've stopped trying to do for the time being, because clearly I suck at it). I can't do anything about the tulip mania of others.

Say you were looking to buy a website.
After long research you‘ve narrowed it down to 2 websites.
Both appear to be equally attractive.
Domain age/length/extension, BL, SERPs, PR, price, design etc.
It is hard to decide, but you can only pick one.
The only “slight” difference between them is their alexa rank.
Site A alexa rank is 2,000,000
Site B alexa rank is 20,000

Now, which site would you pick, A or B and why?

if you used that argument over buying one or the other of alexa's sites you would have gotten the short end of the stick...

      Here is another example..
      .
I have one site which has an alexa ranking of 155,647 and made me nearly half a million dollars from less than 700 members

and another site which has a ranking of 138,679 and made 200k from 97,694 members

again if you were deciding on alexa rankings you would have chosen the wrong site to buy

OH and incidentally the 2nd example site is pretty dead traffic wise, its a site we keep meaning to revamp but haven't gotten around to it yet. Members are leaving because it hasn't been updated in years

      Alexa is worthless

And by the way the question is which one has the better conversion rate, because traffic is useless without conversions

you can make more money from low traffic than from high traffic if you have the conversion metrics right, as in my example above

if site A has a better conversion rate I will take that everyday and twice on sundays over site B

A good alexa ranking? Man don't even try to determine your success based off this number. I've seen sites who's alexa ranking is 3,000,000+ make more money than sites who's alexa ranking is 300,000.

If you want advertising revenues... promote your site in the right way...HARD... and sell the ad slots the same way you would properly promote anything else.

Alexa ranking is just one piece of indicators; whether u like it or not, it is still important. compare to 2,000,000 vs 100,000

apparently 100,000 getting more traffic (assuming u r not buying fake traffic)

heck, if you r buying fake traffic, there is no tool is accurate.

The key word there is "apparently".

And it's not about whether you're buying fake traffic. You'd be better off reading the thread, and following its links, than repeating these myths.
