RE: So how much research do you do?

Hey there,

I'm looking at a number of new niches and it got me wondering what other people do when they decide to register new domain names?

Do you just rely on the domain name alternatives that are available through a search at your hosting company?

OR

Do you do some fairly rigorous keyword research to find some hot keywords or long tail keyword phrases?

Any other ideas or methods are welcome....

Appreciate your input....

Regards

Greg

I try and buy a domain that is an exact match of my long tail keyword, if that isn't available, I buy the domain name with hyphens. I don't buy it for seo purposes (though that could help), but because it simply saves me time and confusion thinking whether I bought the perfect domain.

    Hey Greg..

I put a HUGE value on my time, this is of course, proportionate to the importance of the task at hand..

So, when it comes to domain names... I pick 2 keywords from my bunch for each niche, if I get them in the domain, it's cool.. if I don't, I just grab a domain and get to work.

    Here's why:

CarlOcab.com <- Held #1 in Google for the term "make money online" for a bucket load of time.. no keyword rich domain name there.

team_schuman.com <- Similar feat as above and no problem

I'd love to display some of my own, but I'm just not into sharing niches and keywords like that...

The domain name is not that all important, imho. It's the content and skillz that you bring that ultimately play the biggest factor..

    But that's just my way..

    Peace

      Hey Jay,

I agree with the comments you made....Just wanted a broad view of how people conduct doing certain tasks and hence the reason for this thread.....

I suppose people have different ways of doing things and a heap of reasons for doing so as well....

I guess that getting your actual keywords included is first prize...

      Regards

I try to buy a domain name that is either the same as my product name, or reflects what my product does.

    Hi Greg,

I used to go hog wild (sorry) buying up domain names. I then realized that there was a better strategy. Use free web properties with my intended keywords to see which ones have the most potential. Doesn't work all the time, but saves me a lot of money.

if you cant register the exact domain you want, then think about getting one with most of your keywords then run subdomains... works and looks great
