Advice on gaming niche

I already have a domain and site set up for. So any advice for gaming would help. I have some ideas and have found some affiliate programs to work with. What do you guys think about banner ads on a site like this? I am not sure if game banners on a site are good or a turn off. I have seen a lot about banners not being good on a site and then others swear by them. I think they add a little flash and color but could make the site appear to salesy, pushy. I do want them to join games, buy games and guides Etc... I have a lot of ideas for this site but any advice would be great! Maybe a retro games section?

Thanks
Scott

If you want more responses to your question. I'd suggest you go back and change the subject line of this thread to "Anyone in the gaming niche? need some advice"

...and then ask a specific question you want answering. I seriously wanted to kill myself half way through reading your post.

Your problem is simple. You have ADHD. Not only are you all over the place with your marketing, but your question is all over the place too.

Best advice. GET SPECIFIC in what you want, and then get laser focused!

yeah dude, you need to focus man...sheesh.

Here is what you do. Start with the gaming niche. And only work on that niche until you make money. Then scale it up and repeat. Don't even worry about another niche or way to make money online.

Do you know anything about the gaming niche? If you do, then write a crap load of articles on your blog, to generate automatic seo and visitors to your site. If content is good, then they will hang around and read.

Also, have you main page go to a squeeze page and build a list. World or Warcraft has a ridiculous amount of fans. You can send them promos after they opt in to your list, but you must also send them valuable stuff too.

Offer them something free in exchange for their email, a bribe, like a free report or video on how to get more gold-WOW fans know what this is.

And stick to it bro. Write posts on related blogs and keep at it every freakin day. Don't waver from this and stop the jumping around and following every shiny new object.

    Thanks guys!
I deleted most of it. I don't really know what ADHD is all I know is I have a hard time getting and staying focused on anything.

I am trying to get signups for games like Eve online will probably try WOW and a few others. I was planning on reviewing and trying to promote downloadable games for PC, Xbox, and Playstation along with this. I also wanted to do strategy guides. Maybe to much right? Maybe I should just concentrate on the MMO games, go for signups in the games, maybe strategy guides, guild guides etc... and just blog about the few games that I promote.

I would still like to know about the banners and if anyone knows some good MMORPG stuff to promote. There are a lot of free MMORPG's out there. Maybe I will find a couple of good ones and blog on them also. Just because they are free there is probably ways to earn on the back end.

Another question I will probably promote 4 or 5 MMO or MMORPG's I have played 1 and I can't possibly play all of them. I just don't have time. I am sure people on my list and site visitors would like to see me in the games. How do I handle this.

I think banners will work depending on the type of site and it's design. For example, I just launched my first gaming site this month (link in my sig) and I use only small custom 300x100 banners that I only show when a user "loses". But the site is mos intended to promote another gaming site that I'll launch in a week or two, so in fact I could do without ads.

If your site is going to be a blog, you could forget about banners, or have one or two as a complement, and just insert referral links in your posts' text. They will feel less like advertising.

Or you could make videos and create a video blog and advertise through Youtube, which I haven't try but seems more popular everyday. Even if you don't know how to do a video someone will record it for you for $5 or $10 on Fiverr if you provide them with the text.

I have noticed that if I put them on one page or in one category they show up everywhere. I know there is a way around this I just don't remember how to do it. I am going to be talking about a few online games. Each will have it's own category so for that specific game/category I wouldn't mind a banner or 2

You said the link is in your sig. I have seen this in a lot of posts but never see any sigs Why?

    Welcome to my world

I coach a number of gaming content creators and they are doing well. One has sponsorships from an online gaming retailer (they want to reach a targeted audience), whilst the other works with banners, but has a much higher traffic flow.

What you earn from depends on what you site is targeting and how much traffic you get. If you are targeting a local community then you can perhaps earn money from local gaming stores very quickly. If not then you have to think of other option.

I support some of the comments above, define your target market first and they you will know what fits. 50% of people play games, (USA and UK stat) - that a lot of people to generalise. Focus first and then you will be able to understand what will fit.

Hit me up if you need some advice.

Banner ads look bad when you over do it. As long as you make them relevant and don't let them cover too much of the space on your site you'll be fine. Most websites use banner ads, people won't complain as long as you don't make them your primary focus and provide good content.
