I hear the term used often in internet marketing.
What is it?
How is it good to use?
What does it do?

    It's a news piece, generally about your business or product and services that people can read. Google News is full of them.

    It might be an article about the launch of your business for example or a new product, also you can place a backlink to your site.

    You can get a few thousand impressions on decent PR sites for free off a good press release.

    So experiment, it's worth it.

      But how do you make them?
      If a press release is an article on another website, such as Google news, how am I supposed to get my post onto that website?
      Is anyone just able to sign up at Google News and post an article?
      I don't understand,
      Can someone please explain?

        I don't mean to sound blunt, but if you do a query on google, I bet you'll get a detailed answer faster. I doubt anyone will give you a tutorial on press releases here...

            That answer didn't clarify it enough for me. It said that it was an article submitted to newspapers, but I didn't understand how I was supposed to my article on someone else's newspaper/website.

        Hey, Temper.

        No, you cannot simply submit a press release to Google. To get your press release on Google News you must submit your press release through a press release distribution service that is an approved Google news publisher. Not every press release distributor gets their news releases published on Google News. This is an important aspect to know and understand. Also, proper press releases must be written in the third person. Prices for press release distribution vary widely, from $10 on the extreme low end, up to $300 or more on the high end. I can advise you of my personal preferences for press release distribution services if you would like to know.

    Always use a newswire for your press release. A newswire that goes to the media circuits for republication, Yahoo News, Google News and information systems often create results. To answer your question:

    To use Press Release effectively:
    1) Craft a unique story about your business/site
    2) Stage few releases over few days to provide for a follow-of-news
    3) Prepare media like images or videos on your site and use them in the release as well
    4) Appropriately relating your release with brand names will allow you to piggyback on the attention they gather

    One MarketersMedia's release about Mercedes gathered over 20K views and more than 20 discussions on Yahoo News.

    Placement in Yahoo News are deemed more valuable than Google News, as it is permanently hosted under news.yahoo.com, as opposed to Google news being just a link that will drop off after a while.

    One of the best distribution now is MarketersMedia.com. Better than PRWeb, yet cheaper.

    Anyone can tell you what a press release is. But maybe the better question to be asking is whether or not you should be using a press release. Google is seriously penalizing sites for publishing mass duplicate content, even the variety on press release sites. Unless each press release is unique, the links it contains back to your site won't be worth much.

    A press Release is kinda like getting an article written in the newspaper about your business but online. It's good because you can usually get a solid link back to your site with a high pr and it adds credibility to what you're doing when there is an article written about your site on one of these sites
